"I didn't - " began Suriel uncomfortably, but Raziel overrode him with an irritated sigh. "Of course he did. Raziel, help us, we're having an apocalypse! Raziel, help us, we're having another apocalypse! Raziel, help me, I had a fight with Tina the Demon over lunch and she hurt my feelings! Raziel, help, I can't brush my own pelt because I have the IQ of a 2 month old!" He flicked his tail. "Being heaven's secret-keeper doesn't make me your personal servant, you know."
She kept her own gaze on him, intimidated but refusing to appear so. "Ianuarius. Mistystep. Reaper and ghost."

"Niel." The angel said at last, turning his eyes slowly to the broken tree. "You must be truly desperate to summon an angel." He went on simply.
Weaselstar blinked, surprised. So angels didn't all get along.
"Hey." Amriel flattened her ears, she could insult Suriel, but she didn't want some smug archangel doing it. "Like you know any better. I see you're still here, too."

"Definitely wasn't my idea." said Kaina simply, a slight edge to her tone.
"Exactly." said Raziel. "Look, I'd bail you out, but I don't have time right now. I have too many other things going on." He glanced over his shoulder. "Look...just...don't go chasing demons. Oh, and don't drink the water. I gotta go." And with that, he vanished. Suriel's eyes widened. "He can still fly?"

"Figures." Amriel glanced at Suriel, a glint of mischief suddenly in her eyes. "You do have the IQ of a 2 month old by the way."
"I'm two months old." Wrenkit grumbled, looking sullen.
"No." Niel turned to Ianuarius, his dark blue eyes still hostile and untrusting. The male reaper seemed to shy away, but it was hard to tell whether he actually did. Niel turned back to Kaina. "Why should I help you?"

"The hell are you still talking to me for?" said Kaina irritably. "This wasn't even my plan."
Suriel snorted, then looked equally apologetic and awkward when Wrenkit spoke.

"No, but it isn't like he's going to be much help." Niel said in annoyance. "A shapeshifter has more backbone. You don't want to take charge, do you Ianuarius?"
Ianuarius averted his eyes, a mixture of fear and anger with himself barely visible in his icy eyes. "No." He said quietly, staring hard at the ground with his ears flat.
"See?" The three-legged angel stared hard at Kaina. "Why should I help you?"
"So what now?" Weaselstar attempted to get the conversation back to the problem at hand, disliking the sudden change. Oh sure, humour at some time like this would lighten their souls, good for morale, etc. Who really believed that?

Kaina shrugged, annoyed by Ianuarius' behavior. "You shouldn't, as far as I'm concerned. Angels and reapers are better off ignoring each other. But if you can think of one, feel free to tag along."
Suriel exchanged a glance with Amriel. "Well, if Raziel's in too bad of a mood to find us orders, I honestly have no idea. Try to survive until the angels reorganize, I guess. They will eventually."

"I'd love to ignore you, really." Niel said bluntly. "But you've got a mortal with you, and that makes you my problem." He turned and looked up the tree. "I hope you two clowns weren't the ones who broke it."
"We could explore." Amriel suggested, ignoring the ghosts and looking at Suriel. "Find some other angels, figure out what's going on from here. I'm not going to just sit on my tail because this has never happened before, are you?"

"No." said Kaina irritably after a moment's indecision. "It was like that when we got here."
"Because exploring has gone so well for us thus far." countered Suriel, flicking his tail.

"Only jerks say 'thus' anymore." Amriel informed her fellow angel in a slightly sullen tone. "If you aren't using angel language, at least use the right from of this one. Anyway, exploring hasn't gone that badly for me yet."

"You haven't run into the demons." protested Suriel, ignoring her jab at his speech. "We're extremely outnumbered."

"We're always outnumbered." She sighed, getting annoyed. "Don't you want to know what we're up against? Maybe we could even kill a few demons, do our part."

As if they'd been summoned by the very words, a sinister, high-pitched giggle sounded from somewhere nearby, and the grass rustled. Tigertail shrank back in fear, trying to determine the source of the sound.

Amriel stiffened, flattening her ears and fluffing up her white fur. "Come out." She called in a suddenly commanding tone, albino eyes narrowing towards the noise.
Weaselstar let out a low hiss, backing away. "Guessing you two don't know what that is?" He muttered in the angel's direction, shooting them a resentful look as if this was their fault.
Wrenkit gave a little shriek, jumping and stumbling back in fear. "Suriel?" She said tremulously.

"Stay still." said Suriel, moving so his back was to the mortals. He narrowed his eyes at the bushes.
With a whoosh, a black cat with one white sock appeared about three feet away. She swished her long tail in the grass and her eyes turned a dull, smoky blood-red.

Amriel didn't move, but held her chin high and stared back at the demon with her own red eyes. On first glance, she might appear to be a demon herself, which had grown somewhat less funny over time. She shook her head firmly, dismissing these thoughts and returning to the situation at hand. "What do you want?" She asked coolly, flicking her tail. "You can't possibly expect a deal right now, can you?"
Wrenkit whimpered and backed away, while Weaselstar simply stared, tense.

The demon flicked her large ears. "Touchy." she reprimanded. "Can't a fallen angel take some time off to catch up with her old friends? Even crossroads demons get lonely."
Suriel looked away from her with a pained expression.

"Do you have a point?" Amriel flicked her tail again, giving Suriel a fleeting glance. "I'm not going to chat with you. We're not doing that, demon." She said the word with a good deal of disdain, and her voice was frosty.

"I want to find who's responsible for this and put them in the ground. You want to find them and...I don't know, arrest them or something. We have common interests." she said simply. "This isn't the time for bad blood."

"You want to work together?" Amriel narrowed her eyes, looking skeptical. Sure, common interests, but the angel wasn't buying it. Why not just work for herself? "Why?" She asked, voicing her thoughts. "Stumped? Need help?"

Belial laughed; a chilling, demonic sound that made it sound like there were many voices laughing at once. Tigertail stood very still, not wanting to draw attention to himself. "I have a netherworld to rule." she said, flicking her tail. Flames danced in her eyes for a moment. "Sticking with your sorry tails is my best chance of getting that to happen. Angels have a penchant for getting everything to work out exactly how they want it to, isn't that right?"
"What are you implying?" Suriel snapped. "You think we're somehow responsible for all this?"
"What now?" asked Mistystep, glancing at Ianuarius and nervously shuffling her paws.

Amriel, however, ignored the clear jab. "Fine, we'll work with you." She said abruptly, keeping her voice steady and cold. "Whatever you think of us, right now we have a problem to solve. So, what do you know?"
Wrenkit shrank back, trying to slide closer to Suriel. "What's wrong with her?" She whimpered.
"Well, there's no point in standing under this dead tree anymore." Ianuarius pointed out, giving it a quick glance. "Niel, Hastiel is dead, I did what I could but you should probably go look."
Niel's eyes widened slightly. "Great." He muttered under his breath. "Of course it would be her."

Mistystep nodded, nervously inching her way closer to the group. "What do you mean, go look?"
Kaina flicked her tail and started walking.
"Well, it's no secret the Prophets disappeared from the mortal realm." said Belial, shrugging. "Maybe they're here somewhere. We should find one."
"She's a demon." said Suriel quietly. "An evil force, from the depths of hell."

"She's Belial, or was." Amriel muttered back, not looking at her fellow angel. "So where do we start?" She asked in a louder tone, taking a step towards the demon.
In response, Niel promptly vanished.
"Angel souls." Ianuarius followed Kaina, giving Mistystep a quick look as he explained. "They get reaped too, you know, but it's different. I'm not sure if it even worked since we're here."

Kaina thumped her tail on the ground irritably as Niel vanished. "Angels..." She continued towards Hastiel's burial site. "Can we even reap here? And to where?"
"We catch one." said Belial simply, grinning. "You sense them and lead me to one, I'll do the rest."
"No." said Suriel, staring at Amriel. "This is insane."

"You got a better idea?" Amriel spat suddenly, turning and shooting Suriel a fierce glare. "You think I like this? Why don't you call Raz again, maybe he'll actually spare two seconds of his precious time to fill you in." She turned back to Belial, eyes cold with anger. "You coming?"
"I wish I knew." The reaper flicked his tail, catching up to Kaina. "I don't like being trapped here, not knowing the rules."
"Don't bother, wherever her soul is it isn't there." Niel had returned, a dark look in his eyes. "We need to find the other angels, which means we find the ghosts. Any idea where they are?"

Kaina shrugged. "There are ghosts everywhere, I can sense them. Pick a direction and we're sure to run into one sooner or later."
"I'm staying here, Kaina." said Suriel stubbornly. "With the mortals. This is no game for them, they need protection."
Belial pursed her lips. "Awwww, you have changed." she said, putting her tail over her heart in a sarcastic gesture. "So sweet."

"Fine." Amriel shook her head, then reached forward with her tail and disappeared along with Belial.
"Thanks." Wrenkit murmured, looking relieved.
"Good." Niel started walking quickly in a random direction.

Suriel nodded, staring uneasily into the empty space where Amriel had vanished. "Stay close. There are plenty of other demons who won't stop to talk."
Kaina followed him, ears twitching at every sound.

"What happened with her, anyway?" Weaselstar asked, tilting his head and narrowing his eyes. "She said she was a fallen angel."
(Muse: *throws new character that I'm probably going to hate tomorrow*)
Amriel appeared along with Belial in a little hollow in the ground, where a couple half-dead rose bushes still stubbornly reached their wilted leaves and flowers above the ground. A short ways away, a skinny tortoiseshell she-cat with pale yellow eyes was sitting perfectly still on the rough ground, watching a small fire with apparent fascination. Without noticing the two arrivals, she lifted a multicolored paw, nipped it, and let a couple drops of blood drip into the flames.
