Suriel shook his head irritably. "It is forgotten. We have a more important question. How do we leave this place? I have not received any orders."
Mistystep squeezed her eyes shut a little tighter. "It's normal...just the moor...no, wait. There's a tree nearby...a big tree. It's old."

"Look up." Ianuarius's quiet voice was a monotone, the kind that made you feel relaxed and tired if you listened too long. "Can you see the top?"
"Yeah, me neither." The angel did her best make a serious face, but it looked like hehe could still burst out laughing at any moment. "Who else is here, anyway?"

Suriel dipped his head, flicking his tail sadly. "Hastiel is dead."
Mistystep shook her head. "No. No...I got scared. Ran away, didn't look back." She opened her eyes. "Was that helpful?" Kaina tilted her head. "A tree? Here?" She looked around at the flattened moor. "Seems strange enough to be worth a look."

"That was helpful." He told the she-cat, glancing at his fellow reaper. "It's a landmark, anyway. A place to start."
This time, a genuinely remorseful look came into Amriel's eyes. "I'm sorry to hear that. She was nice. How did it happen?"

Suriel hesitated. As much as he disliked Weaselstar, he wanted Amriel to have a good first impression of ghosts or this whole operation might go sideways. "She was killed by a demon." he said at last. That much, at least, was true. "They exist here too."
Kaina huffed impatiently. "Well, let's get a move on then. I don't want to be stuck here any longer than I have to. We had jobs to get back to."

Weaselstar flicked an ear, but didn't speak up. He guessed Amriel would start to hate him soon enough, but he might as well postpone it.
"I know, I saw one." Amriel twitched her tail, fur raising at the thought. She shook her head and pressed on. "Okay, so what now? Is there a safe place you wanna take these to?" It was obvious she meant the ghosts, but she didn't look at them.
"As soon as possible." Ianuarius agreed. "There must be chaos out there by now."

"I don't have any idea." said Suriel. "Amriel, we need to summon an archangel. There's nothing else to do."
Kaina nodded and set off. Soon, with Mistystar's direction, they reached the tree. It had been split cleanly in half by lightning. "Woah..." said Mistystep. "That's not what it was like before."

Ianuarius turned to Kaina, his blue eyes betraying his alarm. "It's gone. It can't be gone, there must be more." He spoke quickly, as though it would come true if he said it out loud.
"An archangel?" Amriel's ears flicked back, she didn't seem to think much of this idea. "Why?"
"What's an archangel?" Wrenkit ventured.

"A clan leader of angels." explained Suriel, then turned back to Amriel. "We don't know what we're doing here. I'm young, you're not much older than me. We need someone higher up in heaven to tell us what to do."
Kaina cautiously approached the tree, sniffing it over. "There was a portal here..." she said. "I'm not sensing it now though. Damn it."

"So we'll find another one." Ianuarius said firmly, looking around the clearing. "Perhaps each cat comes through a different one." He knew how unlikely this was.
"I already know what they'd tell us." Amriel flicked her tail, voice going deeper in an imitation of a lower voice. "You must protect the mortals at all costs. Remember your mission, do whatever you have to."

"Raziel wouldn't, you know. Of all the archangels, he wouldn't stick to the script." said Suriel reflectively. "I wonder if he's here too."
"No...that seems very unlikely." said Kaina. "This tree holds a lot of magic. I just don't know how to reactivate it."

"Maybe we need more magic." Ianuarius suggested after a minute, leaning closer to sniff the tree. "The angels might know." He then shot Kaina a swift glance, as if thought she'd disagree.
"Yes, Raz is all right." Amriel agreed, relaxing a bit. "We should look for him."

"Or, we could summon him." said Suriel stubbornly.
Kaina flattened her ears. "Since when do they ever make a situation less disastrous?" she questioned.

Ianuarius hesitated, giving Mistystep a fleeting glance before looking back to Kaina. "I know what they're like. But what other choice do we have? We need magic, and I doubt reaper magic is going to be of much use unless we start taking souls." This last sentence was uttered almost casually, as if it were a perfectly natural thing to say.
Amriel's fur fluffed up a bit, against her best efforts. "What if he isn't here? He'd hate us for dragging him in." She pointed out, almost sullenly.

"Can we even summon someone to StarClan? I mean..." He paused, closing his eyes and flicking his tail. "See, we can't get out."
"Yeah, but...angels? Really?" She gave him a withering glance.

"What are you suggesting?" The other angel asked, giving her paw a casual lick, as if trying to prove beyond a doubt that she didn't care much.
Ianuarius returned it with a serious, bracing look. "I don't love them either. But they're powerful, and they want to go home. Right now we're on the same side, we have to use that."

"He's already here somewhere, probably." said Suriel. "And right now, we need him here."
"Maybe they did all this in the first place." said Kaina. "Some stupid experiment. It does sound like them."

"I don't think so." Ianuarius mused, falling silent for a moment before continuing. "One of them died. You know them, they would never have let that happen. Well, not intentionally. But even if they did they have to want to go home soon, before they're all killed." He shook his head, closing his eyes.
"Why do we need instructions, though?" Amriel sounded spooked by her own daring.

Suriel flattened his ears. "You have any bright ideas, Archangel Amriel?" he said scathingly.
Kaina nodded. "Well, I don't have to like it. But fine. Angels it is. Where are we gonna find one of those?"

Amriel flattened her own ears. "Well, why do they get to be over us?" She persisted, there was no turning back now. "Do they have some higher knowledge we're incapable of? Maybe they're just special like that."
"We could summon one." The male reaper suggested slowly.

"I dunno. Can we just summon Raziel? He knows more about pretty much everything, I'm telling you he can help." said Suriel stubbornly.
"You know how to summon an angel?" asked Kaina, tilting her head.

"Well....that might be stretching it." Ianuarius admitted, glancing down at his paws. "When an especially resourceful cat finds out they're dying, they look for a miracle. If they're lucky enough to have resources, they figure out how to summon an angel. I just watched, but I think I can figure it out."
"Fine." Amriel agreed at last, though she didn't look too happy about it. "But only because we know each other, and I trust you."

Kaina sighed. "Fine. Let's get this over with."
Suriel nodded, satisfied. "Thank you." He traced a symbol on the ground, pulled a little of his own fur, then began chanting until at last he ended with Raziel's name. The symbol started to smoke. After a few moments of this, there was a loud squealing sound and Suriel turned to the ghosts. "Cover your eyes!"

Wrenkit obeyed instantly, shoving her face into the dirt and cowering. As Raziel's form began to appear, she let out a terrified wail, muffled by the grass.
Weaselstar narrowed his eyes, as if debating whether or not to listen. However, he closed his eyes and turned his face away in time to not be fried, seeming to decide the threat was real.
Amriel yawned pointedly, as if she couldn't resist showing that the mortals couldn't handle what she considered mundane. She flicked an ear carelessly, waiting for Raziel to appear.
Ianuarius turned, doing something similar to what Suriel had done, though there were a couple differences since he wasn't summoning an archangel. After he had added a piece of Mistystep's fur (without asking her first) he began to chant in a low, rhythmic tone. The symbol glowed, and much like Suriel's began to smoke. "Look away." He murmured to Mistystep.

Mistystep obeyed and turned nervously away. "What's going to happen?" she asked.
Tigertail's eyes widened, then he turned away and closed them just in time. After a bright flash of light that would've burned out the eye sockets of anyone who was both non-angel and watching, a tall silver cat with bold, black tabby-stripes, bright green eyes, and a white patch of fur on his chest appeared. He had a calmer, more mature air about him than the other angels, but didn't come across as particularly intimidating. He looked around as if confused by the sudden scenery change.

"Hi Raz." Amriel spoke in a cheerful tone that seemed a bit false, and somehow she wasn't quite meeting the archangel's eyes. Maybe she just didn't want to hear about how important the mortals were anymore, about how the mission was bigger than all of them and so on. Hopefully, Raziel wouldn't regurgitate the angel script.
Ianuarius didn't answer as an extremely loud high-pitched sound began, and a flash of dangerous light appeared. When it died down, a small tabby cat with solid, silvery stripes and large dark blue eyes was standing there, staring around suspiciously. He had three legs, his back right one being a stump, and an old scar down the right side of his face.

Kaina flicked her ears back. "Please identify yourself." she said in as scathing a tone as she dared take with an angel. Behind her, Mistystep gave a strangled little squeak of surprise.
"Hello, Raziel." said Suriel politely. Raziel looked around at the two of them. "Suriel, Amriel." he identified them in turn, gaze landing on Amriel. "Lemme guess: You don't know what to do, and you need my help with...whatever it is you don't know."

Amriel gave him a withering look before she could stop herself. "No, we invited you here because we genuinely wanted to spend time with you." She retorted in a heavily sarcastic tone. "You think, genius?"
"You first." The tom answered curtly. "Reaper." He barely glanced at Ianuarius and Mistystep.

Raziel rolled his eyes, seeming unbothered by the sarcasm. "Nice to see you too -" He trailed off as he saw the ghosts. "Oh hey there." he said, flicking his tail. "Who's the leader?" he asked them curiously.
Kaina flicked her tail, irritated. "Kaina." she said at last. "Happy?"

"And them?" He twitched an ear to indicate Ianuarius and Mistystep, not taking his hostile gaze off Kaina.
"I am." Weaselstar spoke up warily. "Suriel says you can help?"
