Belial tilted her head. "Hey." she said, approaching the cat. "Who're you?"
"Long story." said Suriel shortly.

The she-cat glanced up, ears pricking. "Moth." She said, glancing from Belial to Amriel and back. "You aren't here to kill me or anything, are you?"
Amriel followed, staying back a little. While she had chosen to work with Belial, she by no means trusted the demon or intended to let her out of sight.

"That depends." said Belial simply, ignoring Amriel's presence. "What was that you were doing?"

"I was trying to make a protection spell." Moth answered, giving the flames an almost sheepish glance. "But I guess it didn't work, or you wouldn't be here. Unless your an ally?" The she-cat tilted her head, flicking an ear as she looked at the taller cat. "You haven't tried to kill me yet anyway."

"Magic doesn't work here, stupid." said Belial, sniffing her impatiently. "Are you a ghost?" She swatted at her face with her claws extended to see if she could hurt her.

Moth pulled back, stiffening. "Prophet." She answered, then sighed. "You want information, right? The key to the future, how to murder your ex, I don't know everything okay?"

Belial grinned, turning to Amriel. "Got one." she said triumphantly. Abruptly, she backtracked in a complete circle around Moth, then lit a leaf from the fire and dropped it. The ground around the prophet-angel lit up in a flaming circle. "Holy fire." she explained happily. "Now. What do you know about this place?"

Amriel didn't smile, though this cost her a great deal of willpower.
Moth didn't move, just closed her eyes for a second. "Right. Stupid." She muttered under her breath. "And if I don't tell you? Why are a demon and an angel working together, anyway?"
"Desperate times." Amriel cut in coolly.

"So...again, what do you know about this place?" asked Belial sweetly, smiling. "And no angel tricks, I was one. I can tell."

"Well, I know you can't make a spell like that by accident." Moth said reluctantly, looking back at Belial with a mixture if wariness and curiosity. "It's really old, I wouldn't have known what it was for if I hadn't...er....found out. This is the realm of the ghosts for Death's sake, it's not even supposed to be connected to the angels, or demons, or anyone."

"Found out?" prompted Belial, listening attentively to every word. "How?"

"Well, we're here, aren't we?" Moth raised her eyebrows. "So it's a little obvious what the spell does now. But it's weird, because it would take a lot of power to pull this off, not just anyone could have done it. It wouldn't have exactly been fun to do either."
"Do you know who could have done it?" Amriel asked at last, reluctantly it seemed.
"Someone really powerful?" She offered. "Other than that, it's hard to say."

Kaina froze in her tracks, fur rising along her spine. "Do you feel that?" She shrank back, shivering as the feeling of dread and pure death surrounded the little group. Mistypaw gave a little shriek and bolted before anyone could stop her.

Ianuarius froze, eyes narrowed. He was aware that Mistystep had fled, but he didn't find himself able to give this fact much thought. As a reaper, death in general didn't phase him, but this was so strong he could almost feel his fur blown back by it. He swallowed, unable to speak.
Niel let out a hiss, flinching back. "What are you doing?" He snarled, turning to the reapers with a savage glint in his eyes.

"It's not us!" said Kaina, flattening herself to the ground as the feeling intensified.
"Having trouble, are we?" came a smooth, icy-calm voice from behind them.

Ianuarius turned, claws sliding put of their sheaths, crouched to the ground as ice cold dread swept over him. "Who are you?" He forced out, his voice shaking against his will.
"Screw this." Niel vanished in a flash of light.

The cat hesitated before replying, as if weighing his words carefully. He had a strange air about him - as if he'd been around since the beginning of time yet hadn't aged a day past middle age. "I am, in a sense...the same as you. Restorer of balance, escort to the world to come."

"A....reaper?" The words sounded flat, unsatisfactory as soon as he said them, but Ianuarius wasn't sure what else to say. Obviously, this cat was much more powerful than an ordinary reaper, yet he couldn't think of anything else that fit as close.

The cat smiled. "I am the father of all Reapers." he said simply. "I am Death."
Kaina drew in her breath sharply but didn't dare move from her position. Under normal circumstances she wouldn't have believed him, but there was an undeniable air about him that made it difficult to come to any other conclusion.

Ianuarius didn't move or reply. Death? Death wasn't real, he was a figment of certain reapers over active imagination. And yet, there he was. It was impossible to ignore the feeling surrounding him, or the fact that deep down it seemed like he had been waiting for this to happen, cheesy as that sounded. When he opened his mouth, he wasn't sure what was going to come out. "Have we done well?"

Death chuckled lightly. "Let me ask you this. How do you know which souls to reap, and which to let live?"
"T-that's easy." stuttered Kaina nervously. "They have this aura around them...this feeling that lets us know when it's their time."
"Yes, and that would be because I mark them." said Death simply. "You follow my rules, and you don't even know it. Isn't that amusing?"

Amusing was one word for it. Ianuarius tilted his head, suppressing a small shudder that swept through him. "Why haven't you spoken to us before?" He blurted out before he could stop himself.

"Simply put, I'm not in the habit of spending my time socializing." said Death in a tone that somehow made the asker sound like a whiny kid asking for attention. "I have better things to do."

Ianuarius glanced away, a little embarrassed. He glanced at Kaina, wishing she would speak. Death's gaze wasn't uncomfortable so much as it was intense.

"Uh...so...why are you here now?" ventured Kaina nervously. When Death turned to her, she shivered and looked at the ground.
"As I'm sure you're aware," said Death, flicking his tail and looking around at the foggy moor, "if we don't figure out a way to escape the realm of the dead, it won't be very long until things get awfully tangled down below." He looked back at Ianuarius. "Without me, no one can die, you know."
(Meanwhile)
"HELP!" called a small, terrified, gray and white young tom-kit into the forest. He was near camp, crouching by a silky-haired, golden tabby she-cat. She was badly - fatally - injured. Bleeding out on the ground. All around her was the remains of a hastily-drawn salt circle which had been blown partially away even though there wasn't a breeze anywhere around.

"We went to the tree, but we didn't know what else to do." Ianuarius explained sadly.
"Don't move." A thin, short Tom with black tabby markings answered tensely, repairing the salt circle. "I can't help her, not now."

"She's dying!" shouted the gray and white kit angrily. "You have to get her back to camp!"
The air around the area was strangely still and warm, no sign of the spirit that had been wreaking such havoc only moments ago.

"What the..." The tom muttered, unnerved. "Yeah, well, we have a window now." He added, turning and grabbing the she-cat by her scruff, dragging her towards camp.

The gray kit ran ahead. "Fernleaf's injured!" he announced, heading for the medicine cat den.

"Bring her in here." A tall, skinny cat answered, and a silver tabby head poked out of the den. "Slowly." Another voice added from inside.
The tom obeyed, dragging her in and letting go. Then without another word, he headed for the leader's den.
