"Has anyone tried to swim in the ocean?" Dusktalon asked feeling curious. He was sure some cat had done it before. "Yes." Lilyspeckle cast her eyes to the sand. "When the water flooded over the shore and into OceanClan camp, every cat, even those who had not learned, had to swim. We lost so many. Berrylight sacrifices her life to save a kit, swimming out into the current to grab one who was clinging to the remnants of the nursery." Lilyspeckle glanced back out into the waves. "Berrylight was my best friend. I hadn't come here since."

Smokepaw stalked the squirrel but somewhere in the forest a bird's cry spooked it and it darted up a tree. He shook his head. "Mouse dung!" He said in a low voice. He started off hoping to find at least a couple more voles and a starling or some other prey because if he didn't Russetsobg would have his head. Russetsong heard the faint "Mouse dung!" of Smokepaw, and snickered. He'd better find some more prey fast. He must be getting hungry.

He took a deep breath and went back to the hunt easily scoring two mice. He took them back to where the rabbit and vole were. "I want to try and get at least a couple more pieces."

Russetsong nodded. "Try for two, then we can go back and get some moss from Windstar." She had finished grooming her ears and spine, now she was moving on to her ears.

Smokepaw nodded and set to his work. He hopped to find another squirrel and maybe a starling. He padded farther into the woods and spotted a vole. It would have to do he decided. He stalked and pounced happy to be getting a good haul of prey. On his way back to Russetsong he finally found his starling. He set down the vole and found a tree near the starling and climbed up. He dropped down right onto the starling before picking up the vole and heading back.

"You know me too well." Rowanpaw mewed, slightly startled by her mentor appearing out of nowhere. "Could you teach me how you randomly appear out of nowhere?" she asked.

I'll take these back to the camp and you start finding new moss. The moss in Windstar's den is probably good for short notice, but you are already out here. Get some fresh moss by the river tree and come back once you have four balls of them." She grasped the rabbit by the leg, intertwining the two mice by the tails. She shoved one vole under her chin and grabbed the starling and second vole by the leg as well.

Smokepaw nodded. He watched his mentor take away the prey and bounded to get some moss. He came up to the tree his mentor told him to go to and started to peel moss off the tree and as he did he squeezed all the moisture out of it. He rolled it up and got another roll ready. Repeating the process until he had for rolls. He fit two in hIs jaws and the other two under his chin. He made it back to camp and set them down. He unrolled one bundle and began to pick the twigs and thorns out of it and waited for Russetsong to tell him where he should spread it.

Russetsong had placed the prey on the fresh-kill pile in the center of the camp, padding to join Smokepaw. "Start with the kits bedding, then Windstars, then your own. You remember how to clear out bedding and put new moss in?"

"Yes. Instead of my bedding should I do some of the warriors bedding?"he asked as he combed through the first pile of moss to double check there was nothing left in it before she started toward the nursery. He peeked in.

"No. The apprentice's den needs new bedding. It's starting to stink." Russetsong wrinkled her nose. "I don't know where those kits have tumbled off to, but you can start with Sparrowkit's nest."

"Okay." Smokepaw said pulling out the old moss and went about making sure nothing was in the best before adding the new moss and moving to the other nests in the nursery. Once he finished that he padded out into the clearing to check his next roll if moss.

Russetsong sat, waiting for Smokepaw to finish. She saw the sun set lower in the sky."You'd better hurry up if we are going to do battle training while the sun in still up!" Russetsong liked training in the day, but she wasn't afraid to keep practicing at night. She wanted to show Smokepaw that being a warrior means more than just laying around the camp waiting for someone to tell you what to do. She wanted him to know what there is always something to do, even if it was just changing out bedding.

Smokepaw nodded still thoroughly checking the moss but finishing the last bundles faster. He headed to Windstar' s den. "Windstar? Are you busy or may I change your bedding now?" He asked politely.

Windsar moved to the entrance. "I guess I can leave my den for a while and stretch out my legs." As she left, Windstar purred. "Russetsong must have you working hard."

Smokepaw nodded. "But not too hard. She just wants to make sure I understand my dutiesm" he said. He quickly cleaned up the best and added bee moss so the leader could have her den back when she was ready. He then headed to the apprentices den to clean all if the moss in there. Russetsong was right it was starting to stink in there. He did the worj quickly and took the old moss out into the forest before coming back to Russetsong.

"Done?" Russetsong asked. "Good. You can take a break and eat something. Meet me in the Dappled Clearing for battle training before sunset." Russetsong padded out of the camp. Leaving Smokepaw alone with a time limit gave him a chance to show his responsibility.

Smokepaw nodded before taking a small mouse from the freshkill pile before laying down to eat it. Better to leave the bigger prey for those who need it he thought hoping he could clean up his act a little so Russetsong would be a little easier on him. He hurried to the Dappled Clearing to meet his mentor.

"That was fast," Russetsong meowed, hearing Smokepaw coming into the Dappled Clearing. She faced him, her eyes narrowed. "Come at me," she ordered, getting right down to business. She started in a crouched stance, her tail still, ears flicked back. She looked dangerous, which was a change from her usual calm self. There were stories in other Clans about her ruthlessness in battle.

Smokepaw nodded and instead of coming straight at the warrior he ran out of the clearing before climbing into a tree and hopping from branch to branch so he hid on the edge of the clearing.

"Sorry to hear that." Dusktalon mewed placing his tail on her back. He could only imagine how scary that must have been. "I know what it's like to loose a good friend." He mewed before looking down at the ground. Normally, he wouldn't share this kind of thing but this seemed appropriate.

Russetsong didn't have to glance around the clearing. She knew where Smokepaw was; every time he leaped from branch to branch, the leaves shook.
Lilyspeckle looked up at Dusktalon with wide eyes. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice a soft whisper.

Smokepaw dropped form the tree unaware of the fact he was not as sneaky as he thought. He hasn't however disregarded the prowess or intellect of his mentor.

"There was a she-cat named Frostshade and she was a really good friend of mine. She was tough, stubborn and could claw your ears off if you upset her. She was killed by rogues that had ambushed her patrol." Dusktalon pinned his ears back and wrapped his tail tightly around him.

Russetsong whipped around, easily within leaping distance. She lashed her tail, going on the defense until Smokepaw made the first move. "There was a she-cat named Frostshade and she was a really good friend of mine. She was tough, stubborn and could claw your ears off if you upset her. She was killed by rogues that had ambushed her patrol." Dusktalon pinned his ears back and wrapped his tail tightly around him. Lilyspeckle gasped. Her large fluffy tail gently trailed his flank. "I'm so sorry." She didn't exactly know what to say.

Smokepaw lashed out his paw trying to unbalance the she cat while keeping low so she couldn't unbalance him. Russetsong jumped back, avoiding his paw. She padded forward again, inwardly snickering at his low posture. She knew he thought staying low was a good tactic, and it was, but Russetsong was smarter than other cats. She lashed out her own paw, catching both his front legs and tripping him so he fell on his face.

"It's in the past but felt like sharing." Dusktalon mewed though it sounded more like he was telling himself that. "I usually don't share personal things so um consider yourself lucky." He said blushing a little bit.
Greywind chuckled softly. "It's called being stealthy."
