Amberstep heaved a heavy sigh as the tenderpaws listened to her story, knowing that at least Sagepaw would take it the wrong way. Ospreypaw seemed properly horrified at her scars, but he wasn’t the one challenging her to begin with. Rainpaw, she couldn’t read that well. Her displeasure at how Sagepaw was acting was seen in the flick of her ear, the twitch of her muzzle, the aching in her side that wouldn’t go away no matter how much Mistwatcher or Littlemask checked it. Her answer was deadly soft, careful stress placed on every word to make sure Sagepaw really, truly listened. “Sometimes, what an omen-teller may see cannot be stopped. What they see can be omens or things that will happen- by the time Cloudteller saw the signs of an incoming bobcat attack during a nap, my patrol was already out near the site of the attack. He hadn’t been meant to stop it, Sagepaw. The Givers didn’t give him the knowledge the night before. But they did give him enough warning so that he would send an emergency patrol to save my life. It was a gift.” She shifted, claws still coming in and out and scraping at the steady earth under her paws. It was a grounding point, one of the few that she could trust. “Bobcats are one of the most terrifying things you’ll see,” she murmured. “A feral cat much, much bigger than you or me, with sharper teeth and claws and so much quicker. Foxes are just as scary- they can snap your neck just as well as any bear or bobcat can. A fox killed my mother even with a whole border patrol fighting it. It was before you were born.” Amberstep fell silent after that, her demons haunting her for a long moment before she snapped “Come on, enough talking, tenderpaws. Listen to your protectors and mentors. They’re not helping you and teaching you for no reason.” She stalked off to search for prey while making sure the tenderpaws followed, Ospreypaw averting his eyes from the others while they did so.
-
Mistwatcher chuckled, curling up in the hollowed log after Honeyteller finally finished clearing it out. “It really doesn’t seem like something I would do. But I was young, just barely out of kithood, and stumbling after my mentor all day long. I was prone to complaining.” He quieted, brushing the pile of cobwebs so none of it would get wet. He listened to his omen-teller quietly, quirking a smile when she talked about her moment in the rain. “All tenderpaws tend to love the rain unless they grew up scared of it or have long fur like me. Even the loner’s kit, Ospreypaw, finds pleasure in it sometimes. You were just being a normal tenderpaw. I know a few grown cats who still frolic in the open air.” His smile was warm at that. “When I was a kit, back when Rippleteller was still alive- on her last few moons, mind you- I would always see her running and playing in the rain with the tenderpaws. Sometimes they’d play in the river on days when it was so hot out that nobody could get comfortable. None of the cats truly minded. It’s just an unneeded pressure put on a tenderpaw if they’re starkissed. Cats will still love their leader all the same if they’re silly at times, but everyone expects more of you.” He let out a chuckle after saying that. “Ah, don’t mind my ramblings. I’m truly not an elder. Just a pawful of moons older than you- what, seven? Anyways. Did you like being a tenderpaw?”

Almost immediately Sagepaw could tell that she had struck a nerve in Amberstep. Never once had she seen the elite so stiff, so intense. The tenderpaw knew that cats could turn from friendly to cold in a matter of seconds, and she had just been the one to trigger that kind of transformation in Amberstep. For a moment it startled the young she-cat as it would just about any cat not expecting such an event. Her ears flattened ever so slightly, just enough to show that she was unnerved. Sagepaw tried her best to steel herself, to show that she wasn't going to let any cat rattle her, but it was much too late to cover anything up. She had been startled and she couldn't hide it anymore. Even though she was startled, Sagepaw couldn't help but listen as intently as she could to Amberstep's explanation of why Cloudteller had not been able to warn the patrol. Listening to the story, Sagepaw wanted to just open her mouth and give some sort of comment, ask some questions. Why would the Givers even send a sign if it was already about to happen? Why had they waited so long? It just didn't seem right. Vaguely the protector-in-training remembered a story her mother had told her about the Givers and a vision the omen-teller had received. The omen had been given so far in advance that it was easy to avoid what might have been; why weren't omens always like that? Still too shaken to pipe up, Sagepaw was still resigned to her fate of keeping quiet. For some reason she still couldn't wrap her mind around the idea that a fox was just as dangerous as a bobcat, especially after the description Amberstep had just given. Foxes were a threat to the Clan, Sagepaw knew that, but she had actually never heard of a fox killing a cat before. Until now. Silently she turned her amber gaze over to Ospreypaw when the elite had finished talking and was now padding off. Even now when she had so much to say, her tongue was frozen and wouldn't dare let a single thing slip out.

There were a lot of simple things that Honeyteller never really got to do - sitting in a hollowed log while waiting for rain to pass had never really been one of those things. If it rained Honeyteller had either stayed in camp or, if she had been outside, the water would be a mere shower and nothing that she couldn't handle. With Mistwatcher's aversion to the water the omen-teller was more than willing to avoid the shower alongside him, and it gave her more time to simply hang out with a Clanmate. Even if Honeyteller knew a lot about her Clanmates, it was from observing and listening, not by truly interacting with them. A twitch of the whiskers spoke of the mostly white she-cat's amusement. She curled her feathery orange tail around herself as she snuggled down into the infamous cat loaf position. Might as well sit and relax instead of stand. "I had my moments of complaining as well," admitted Honeyteller. "Complaining to a mentor that's also your father proves to be interesting." Laughter danced in the female's eyes as her words came out; she had quite a few interesting stories back from her tenderpaw days. For just a second Honeyteller's amusement faded away. Hearing Ospreypaw be noted as the 'loner's kit' made her stomach somewhat feel heavy. A lot of cats said that, the loner's kit, but to Honeyteller that was like saying he had no Clan blood in him at all. She shook the thought out of her mind. It wasn't her place to make another cat think a different way, not her place to make a cat think and feel as she did. And this most certainly was not the time - right now this was a time to relax and have a fun conversation. Fortunately the omen-teller's mood went right back up. She purred loudly with a mrrrow of laughter following. "I remember Rippleteller," she mewed. Honeyteller and Icetail had been born just in time to have a vague remembrance of the dark-furred she-cat that had been omen-teller before Cloudteller. "She's a small memory, but I know the Clan loved her, especially the kits." A sigh came from the leader when the term star-kissed was pushed into the conversation. It was a term she had heard all of her life since she had been about four moons old. The thought of being star-kissed didn't stay long in Honeyteller's mind luckily. She was able to divert her attention to something else when Mistwatcher spoke up. "I do believe you're about two seasons ahead of me, so you're certainly not an elder." The omen-teller herself had only seen about forty-five odd moons so she wasn't old, not terribly young, but certainly not old yet. Her ears angled forward a bit when Mistwatcher asked his next question. She looked away, feeling her shoulders give a small shrug. "I can't say I didn't enjoy being a tenderpaw. It was interesting, learning how to be an omen-teller and all. Though..." She trailed off for a moment, growing somewhat somber and quiet. "I sometimes wonder if I would have enjoyed as a protector or healer even more. I think I would have chosen to become a healer, it always interested me as a kit."

(( kestrelheart and ember are open i'm still contemplating making more characters i think i hate myself
what if scarlet finds ember? ))
Amberstep stalked through the forest before stopping and sniffing. “Ospreypaw, you take the mouse nearby,” she said flatly, startling him even as he dropped into a hunting crouch. Littlemask had taught him what others couldn’t, how to be quieter than even the best protector hunter and how to be so, so silent to not disturb the wildlife. He crept up, whiskers twitching until he pounced and- “I got it?” He seemed amazed, staring down at the dead prey while Amberstep finally huffed out a little laugh. “I got it! Littlemask will be so proud!” He beamed before spotting just what he had been told to look for- yarrow. He seemed to shine brighter, picking the yarrow and settling down after giving the air a sniff. “There’s more prey here than the mouse, right?” He blinked at her, catching her sly smile. “Yes, Ospreypaw. I was waiting to see if the others would notice. Sagepaw, Rainpaw- no matter what, be vigilant. Smelling the air will both keep you safe and informed as to what’s in the area- predators, prey, other cats. Hearing can be just as important. That’s why, even on hunting patrols before finding any prey, patrols are normally silent. They must first find the prey to hunt it.”
-
Mistwatcher seemed to groan as the rain got heavier, tucking his paws and tail close to him even though he had no danger of being soaked with the rain. He managed to laugh with Honeyteller, though, when she talked about complaining to her father. “That must have been enlightening, hmm?” His chuckles lasted for a good moment before he curled up, quieted and listened to her. “Rippleteller was like the world’s fun and joy rolled up into one cat,” he remarked softly. “She had a good mind on her, too. Was a healer but knew just as much about fighting as the protectors. Made one teach her, I heard. Wanted to be the best cat possible for her clan.” He watched the rain fall before murmuring next. “I don’t know about the protectors, but I’d be willing to teach you some of my herb and healing knowledge. I have a tenderpaw to teach, but it would be no problem for you to accompany us on some of our outings. A healer can only grow stronger with more knowledge, and if you’re the only cat there when one gets wounded, you should at least have enough knowhow to keep them alive or even to help a bit before bringing them back here.”

If Amberstep hadn't of broken the silence then Sagepaw perhaps would have still been down in her own little world of shocked silence. But as soon as the elite had spoken up about a mouse, the ginger tabby perked right back up, her fiery personality shining in her eyes just as bright as they typically did. Even if she hadn't been told to gather up the mouse as prey, the tenderpaw felt happy that at least Ospreypaw would get a chance at it. If he could catch wild herbs then surely he could take down a dumb mouse. As soon as he did Sagepaw felt herself make a little bounce of joy. "You did it!" She exclaimed with a rough purr rolling into her voice. "Shouldn't I try now?" The tabby asked, glancing up at Amberstep. "Rainpaw, too. I can catch a bird. I'm sure I smell warbler around here." What Amberstep was saying was old news to Sagepaw. Keep quiet, don't let the prey know you're there...blah, blah, it was all just recycled information that Sagepaw had already heard from Quietbreeze. Like her father, Sagepaw was shaping up to be a splendid hunter. She did have problems still with predicting where prey would go, but most of the time she would come back from a chase with her kill securely in her jaws. Maybe if she could prove to Amberstep how well of a huntress she was then the elite would be impressed with her.

The sound of the falling rain was comforting to Honeyteller. The noise was soft, quiet gentle as it drummed against the now wet earth. The refreshing scent of the rain was comforting as well. Just the smell alone told of how the earth was being cleansed, washed of any terrible event that might have happened upon its soil. With the sound of the rain came the sound of Honeyteller's soft voice as well. "It really was. There's never a dull moment when you're trained by your mother or father." Sometimes Honeyteller wondered how different things would have been if she were not star-kissed. If she had not been chosen by the Givers then her mentor would have not been her father or even her mother. It was not the custom for a kit to be trained by one of their parents, but for Honeyteller things had been drastically different. "She sounds amazing. What a cat she was. I would have loved to have gotten to really know her." Honeyteller could only imagine all of the wonderful things that a cat like Rippleteller could have told her. As the topic changed, Honeyteller redirected her mind to take in what Mistwatcher said next. A warm smile could be seen on her face. "Really? I mean, you do have a tenderpaw to train, and I would hate to put unneeded stress on your shoulders. Though I wouldn't mind joining you on some herb gathering trips. I'm named after something a healer would use, surely I should know a little bit about healing, right?" The omen-teller joked warmly. She felt like she should at least know a bit more about healing, especially seeing that it intrigued her as much as it did, and if she had a cat willing to teach her then she was going to take this opportunity that was presenting itself to her.
