Blackfern simply nodded and beckoned for the two to follow "We will be hunting near the border today so keep you eyes and ears sharp. We can't let anything escape notice." he moved out of the camp, expecting the two to follow.
Vesper rolled his eyes and followed the older cat.

Wildpaw followed nervously. If there was one cat in the world that made Wildpaw feel small and incompetent it was Blackfern. It wasn't that he disliked his mentor just that he was afraid he would mess up in front of him. As they plunged into the moorland Wildpaw let the scents of pray and any other animals flow into his nose. Nothing useful yet.

It was a little bit after they had left the camp when Blackfern noticed footprints on an exposed patch of dirt. Gesturing to it he asked his apprentice "What kind of animal left these and how would you go along tracking it?"

Shadefall nodded to the tom cat. "Lead the way then. Cause I have no idea how to tell and of these plants apart." She replied as she followed him out of camp. |

Spiritwing chuckled lightly at her words. "We need to collect some coltsfoot and feverfew. Coltsfoot look like dandelions and feverfew are small white flowers." he mewed as they trekked through the forest.

"Fox I believe and I wouldn't track it alone. It needs to be brought to the attention of the clan and then we would start forming double patrols to make sure it doesn't settle here." He answered looked back at Blackfern hoping he didn't get this wrong in front of Vesper. |

Blackfern was silent for a moment before he nodded "Good. You need to be able to think rationally if you want to survive. Running into a fight never won any wars, you have to have a plan, then follow it through. Even if something goes wrong you still need to be able to adapt."
Vesper had to admit there was wisdom in this cats words. Being able to adapt was one of the thing that kept him alive on the streets. If a sudden attack, or drop in food was enough to throw him off his stride he would have already been killed or taken in by some twoleg hunter.

"Just pick out a few stems, it's quite simple." he mewed, suddenly spotting a small clump of coltsfoot just up ahead. He padded over to the clump of herbs and bit off a few stems.

"You would have to decide if you wanted to fight or run. Your original plan, just going on a simply hunt, was thrown off. Do you run and risk bringing it back to camp? Or fight and risk dying?" he shrugged "All life is is choices." he moved ahead a little to check on the prints.
When the older cat moved ahead Vesper looked at Wildpaw and shook his head "What's a fox? We have dogs and twolegs."

Shadefall looked surprised there wasn't more to it then that. "Ok here we go." She reached in and began gently removing several of the funny looking plant. "So how often do you go out looking for herbs?" She asked trying to find something somewhat interesting to say.

He shrugged, "It depends really. I haven't had to go out herb collecting that much this season since it's been pretty peaceful among the clans."

Wildpaw thought for a moment about how to explain foxes to a cat that had never seen one. "They are kind of like fluffy dogs but they are quieter and more sneaky. They are usually red but sometimes come in grey. We try to run them out as they are dangerous."
He turned to look at his mentor. He wanted to ask what he would do but he patiently waited for him to finish with the tracks before his nose caught a strong scent. He opened his mouth to funnel it in.

He nodded in agreement, "Yeah, hopefully it stays peaceful throughout leaf bare too." he mewed, scanning the undergrowth for other herbs. He spotted a some feverfew just beside some bushes and made his way over to it.
(Could we have a fox attack to make things more interesting? .3. ))

Shade was about to follow when she caught a whiff of something not right in the air. "Spiritwing don't move." She hissed. As she tried to pinpoint the direction the scent was coming from. It smelled strongly of fox.
((Sure just started it up for us.))

Spiritwing was already by the feverfew and starting to collect it when Shadefall spoke, "Huh? What is it?" he lifted his head to look at her.
Suddenly the bushes beside him rustled and a fox exploded from it, barreling into the medicine cat who yowled in surprise.

Shadefall watched in horror as the fox slammed into Spiritwing. She gave a loud yowl and launched her self at the fox nipping at it and slicing at its sides trying desperately to make it fight her and not the medicine cat.

A yowl split the air and Blackfern looked back at the two younger cats "Quickly, we need to check out that noise."

Wildpaw reacted quickly, plunging after his mentor. "That's not a fox." He noted as they ran. Was is another cat, possibly a boarder skirmish? He looked back quickly to check on Vesper.

The fox snarled menacingly at the warrior and snapped at her. While the fox was distracted Spiritwing scrambled out from under the fox's paws and darted over to Shadefall to stand beside her and hissed at the hostile animal. He knew a few battle moves so he hoped that would be enough to help.

Shadefall kept her eyes on the fox but addressed the medicine cat. "Go run back to camp. Your not trained for this get help." She jumped around the fox slashing her claws at anything vulnerable.

Vesper kept pace with the clan cats easily, though he was a bit nervous. Fighting dogs was hard enough, if a fox was more dangerous... shaking his head he stared straight ahead. The had just entered a clearing when he spotted the creature. It was scary, but he wasn't going to back down. Before he could do anything though, Blackfern jumped forwards. He hissed and clawed the creatures hind quarters.

(Im gonna assume Vesper and Blackfern is attacking the fox thats attacking spirit and shade? )
Spiritwing opened his mouth to protest but suddenly a couple of cats came barreling into the clearing and attacked the fox. The fox yipped and sprang away, quickly realizing it was outnumbered it pelted away.
