(Pidgeonwing is my fave and I'm dead.)
"I -" Dapplestorm started, then abruptly stopped. He was used to being avoided - if not feared, if not reviled, then certainly scorned on some level. PrideClan was an accepting place, but his clanmates' patience didn't run eternally, and he was, as his mother would have called him, a pawful. He would've been hard-pressed to find a cat other than Leafsplash who actually felt comfortable around him. Safe, even. He was a looming thing, all sharpened claws and fleeting glances, so clumsy with others than conversations shattered in his paws.
He was hardly a friend.
And yet...
"If you saw me with those cats," he settled on, "you wouldn't think I was so kind. And neither would they."
As for that last part: "I wish I would have been around too," he found himself saying.
Huh. That was certainly new.
...
Sadie perched primly before him. She found that the ground was somewhat grubby and chilled by the shade, but certainly not as uncomfortable as she expected, although she found herself missing the bright wildflowers growing in the clearing. Her twolegs had had some flowers in their yard, too.
She spotted some wrapped around a pile of moss that she could only assume passed for a bed around here. Huh, she thought. She was bizarrely reminded of how her male twoleg would bring his mate chopped-off flowers, and how she would squeal at the display.
She shook her head. Duskstar hardly needed another of her prying questions.
"I'm Sadie," she replied. "What's the word? Kittypet? Alright, I'm a kittypet."

Vixenfrost decided to go out hunting though she didn't want to go alone. She wanders over to the apprentices den and calls out to them. She would have liked a warrior but it seemed everyone was busy. Plus she might teach one of the apprentices a thing or two. Lilypaw had been relaxing when one of the warriors came over to the den. She looked up and her ear flicked as she stood up and padded over to the older she-cat. "Hello, Vixenfrost, what do you need?" The apprentice sat down and wrapped her tail around her paws as she looked at the warrior.

Jaypaw spotted Speckledstone grooming herself near the warriors' den, so she hurried to her mentor. "Speckledstone! Hi! Can we go do something? I went out hunting and I almost caught a thrush, but then a kittypet interrupted me and it got away. I did catch a mouse, though! And it was pretty fat too!"

(trying to avoid Pidgeonwing just saying bruh)
"I don't know," Pidgeonwing said. "You seem like a big softy under that gruff exterior. You play it up like you're a big mean cat, but underneath those teeth and claws is just a cute kitten!"
He was mostly joking now. Dapplestorm seemed to think he was a lot bigger than he was and Pidgeonwing found that funny in a way. He was sure that Dapplestorm could rip him to shreds if he wanted. But he knew that Dapplestorm would never do that to him. And he really couldn't think of a cat Dapplestorm would do that to. Sure he was horribly at conversation and ripped that to shreds, but that was just him.
--
Duskstar was happy that she seemed to be settled in. He settled in a little more himself. He laid on the floor and let his back legs stretch out while he front ones stayed tucked under his chest. There was still enough space for the both of them to fit comfortably.
"Alright, so you're Sadie. And you would like to join PrideClan, I take it? Or do you want our help finding your home? We don't normally do escort missions, but I'm willing to make an exception for you. The Clan is very busy as you can imagine. However, everything is becoming warmer, so we can spare a few Warriors to take you back to the twoleg homes."

Speckledstone was caught off guard having her bubbly apprentice approach her. She tried to take in everything that Jaypaw had said and decided to settle on the fact that Jaypaw had left camp without her. "You went out into the forest by yourself? You know that you're not supposed to do that. If I've told you once, I've told you a million times."

Jaypaw's tail drooped at her mentor's words, but she wasn't put down for long. "I'm sorry. I keep forgetting. I tried to look for you earlier, but I couldn't find you and I really wanted to go hunting. I ended finding a kittypet instead, but oh well. Can I learn battle moves? Please?" She looked at Speckledstone with wide, eager eyes.

Speckledstone found it hard to stay mad at her apprentice for long. She was just too eager and really even if Speckledstone stayed mad at her, she would bounce right back in a matter of minutes. "Alright. Just try to remember, next time, okay? Let's head out into the woods where we can train and you can tell me more about this kittypet you found."

("Sure he was horribly at conversation and ripped that to shreds" I CHOKED.)
"You," Dapplestorm meowed, tone softening, "are something else. I... appreciate the faith, though."
He wasn't sure what about Pidgeonwing allowed him to sound so sure - was he delusional? Naive? Desperate? His conviction sounded strong, though, and Dapplestorm just wasn't sure what to do with that.
"And you're just blatantly a big kitten," he added dryly, a gleam in his eye.
...
Sadie's face fell at his words. She was hoping she wouldn't have to do this part, to bare her soul to a stranger again.
"They actually left in their monster," she meowed, heart heavy. "I don't know if you know much about their thunderpaths, but they're... hard to follow, and there's no way to track their scents. The monsters smell much stronger than anyone inside of them, and it's impossible to tell them apart. My - my twolegs could be anywhere right now." She paused, sucked in a long, rattling breath. "I appreciate the offer, but I can't waste your time."
His other offer, of course, was joining the clan. That one felt real, somehow; accepting it would inevitably mean formally acknowledging that she could never return to her old life, no matter how many stars she wished on or dreams she walked in. To live in the clan would mean to live as a savage. She couldn't imagine what her dear mother would say.
"I'm hungry," she admitted, meek. "I - I don't normally beg, you have to understand, but my kits..."

(Pidgeonwing is definitely all three of those things)
Pidgeonwing shook his head, laughing a bit. "Perhaps I only act this way to gain sympathy from cats like you. Perhaps this is all just an elaborate trick. I act like a mouse-brain in order to win your trust and have other cats take care of me so I don't have to do it myself."
He paused for a moment and looked over at Dapplestorm. "And then I get them when they least expect it!" He jumped on top of him in a playful way, much like an apprentice sparring with their mentor. He was truly uneducated a fighting though, so he wasn't sure where to go from the position he'd put himself in. And he also didn't want to hurt Dapplestorm accidentally.
--
Duskstar nodded slightly. He knew what she meant about thunderpaths. They were horrible things with no remorse. He'd seen many good cats perish to them. He knew that she was right about her twolegs being lost causes. He wished he could help her more on that front, however, he respected her not wanting to talk about it.
He thought about her request for food and eyed her evenly. "Yes... I see. However, I have to say that only Clan cats are allowed to eat with the Clan. We will care for you and take you in. You may eat as you wish and we will help you care for your kits. We will protect them and raise them as our own so one day they may protect the kits of others. And you will be treated the same. Once you are out of the nursery, you will learn to fight and hunt at least enough so to protect and feed yourself so that maybe you will also protect and feed the Clan." He paused for a short moment. "I realize this is a lot to take in. But if you wish to continue eating with us and if you want a safe space to raise your kits, I need you to agree to join our Clan."

Jaypaw nodded and forced herself to not run to the entrance and rather walked at a casual pace there. "So, her name's Sadie and she's expecting kits! She lost her Twolegs and she somehow got in our territory. She looked really miserable and thought there are random bowls of kittypet food sitting around in the forest. I didn't want to break the warrior code, so I decided to bring her to camp to talk to Duskstar! He told me 'good job', too!"

Speckledstone nodded at this information as she trotted along beside her apprentice. She couldn't believe that Jaypaw had found a kittypet in the woods and brought her back to the camp. But if Duskstar had said everything was okay, she supposed she couldn't be mad about that. "I guess you had an exciting morning without me then."

(PIDGEONWING.)
For a moment, Dapplestorm was so shocked that all he did was lie on his back in the dust and blink up at Pidgeonwing in surprise. It had been moons since he had been in a playfight, aside from training matches as an apprentice, which involved fewer giggles and more complaints than any kind of game, anyway. Even as a kit, Leafsplash would only entertain battle games for so long before she got bored and gravitated towards something else.
As soon as he got his wits back, he retorted, "You sure about that?" and flipped their positions, momentarily pinning Pidgeonwing down. He held him there firmly, not wanting him to wriggle free, but careful not to seriously harm him. He found himself suppressing the urge to grin like a hapless apprentice.
"Who's the - what was it, cute kit? Who's the cute kit now, huh?"
...
The first time Sadie had felt her kits kick, she had been shocked. By then, she knew that she was pregnant - her twolegs had taken her to the cutter as soon as the nausea began - but nobody had ever told her that unborn kits moved. For a moment, her heartbeat caught fire, and she could hardly move with the fear that it would tear itself out of her chest.
It had been late, then, the moon high in the sky, the youngest twoleg kit snoring beside her. Trembling, she had climbed onto the kit's bed and watched her, moonlight playing across her face, features slack, mouth slightly ajar. Something in her heart had settled, then, like loose pieces rearranging themselves until they all fell into place. She thought of the twoleg mother, kissing her daughter's forehead when she fell ill, ruffling her hair as she danced through the hallways. In that moment, motherhood had felt as old as time and as simple as breathing.
Watching the rise and fall of that tiny kit's chest, she made a silent promise to her own young: You will always be mine, wherever you are. We'll always have this moon, and even if we never meet again, I will always, always love you.
Looking back, she had learned to love there - not when Jaypaw explained that she-cats could mate with she-cats, but when she realized that pieces of her heart were going to soon walk away, and she would still call them hers.
When Duskstar mentioned raising them, her ears perked up. She had hoped, running through the forest, that they could stay, but it had been a forbidden hope, a silent betrayal. Now, though - now it was close enough to taste, like rain on the other side of a window.
If she joined the clan.
She lifted her chin. "I love my kits very much, Duskstar," she meowed calmly, tail waving back and forth in time with her heartbeat. A pause. Then: "Tell me what I have to do to join."

Pidgeonwing smiled up at him. His heart was pounding half because he was with Dapplestorm and half because he was actually out of shape and fighting took a lot more energy than he had anticipated. He could truly get used to Dapplestorm being his friend for the rest of his days. Even if they were nothing more than friends, that would be better than not having him in his life at all. He had never felt this happy in his life that he could remember. Or at least, that he could remember since he could start remembering stuff clearly.
"It's still you, mouse-brain." He batted playfully at Dapplestorm's face, hitting him on the cheek and nose.
--
Duskstar smiled and hopped to his feet. He was happy to have another Clan member, especially one with young kits on the way that would grow up in a warrior way of life. A kit that could be trained properly. As much as he loved bringing in strays, it was a lot of effort to train them into complete warriors when they were already well past their apprenticeship days. This was going to be a lot of fun. He almost wished that he could apprentice one of them.
"Then we shall get you a warrior name, a nest in the nursery, and we will most definitely get you fed." He started towards the entrance of the den. "And I'll answer all your questions about warrior life."

Jaypaw nodded. "I know I probably shouldn't have brought her back to camp, but she clearly didn't know how to hunt and I didn't want to just leave her there. She's carrying kits. She asked for help, and I couldn't just abandon her." Jaypaw looked up at her mentor with somber eyes.

Speckledstone touched her tail to Jaypaw's shoulder. "You did the right thing, Jaypaw. Don't you worry. You were very brave as well, checking in on a mysterious cat. However, I do wish you'd be a little more careful. I don't want you getting hurt while you're out."

"You're right," Dapplestorm replied dryly. "But that means you've just been beaten by a helpless kit, so congratulations."
Something about the way that Pidgeonwing was gazing up at him snagged on his chest, all helpless and starry-eyed. It had been a long time since anyone looked at him in such a raw, open way. It made him want to pause, look a little deeper, think a little harder.
Perhaps Pidgeonwing simply admired his skills as a warrior. After all, he and Pidgeonwing had never been in battle together before, and their first hunt together had been only moments before - and not just any hunt, but a hunt that Dapplestorm had almost completely ruined. It wasn't hard to imagine that he might be shocked and impressed by his talents. For some reason, the thought warmed his chest. Pride, he supplied swiftly.
It took him a moment to realize that while Pidgeonwing was staring at him, he was staring back.
He shoved the useless thought aside. "Do you surrender now?" he added, smirking.
...
Sadie padded after him, head spinning. She hardly registered his words, so many of their meanings unfamiliar and foreign. She wanted to tell him that she was a cat, not a bird, she she would prefer a proper bed in a dry home, and that Purina was her cat food of choice, but deep down, she knew the lack of accommodations weren't Duskstar's fault. He was giving her what he had, and the least she could do was feign some semblance of happiness.
"I only have one question right now," she replied. "Is fresh prey any good?"

(I LOVE THEM TOO MUCH)
"A true warrior never surrenders!" Pidgeonwing shouted. He kicked his back legs up into Dapplestorm's stomach and managed to kick him off. "But a true warrior knows when to retreat!" he continued. "Catch me if you can, mouse-brain!"
Swiftly, he picked up the mouse that he had killed and took off as fast as he could through the forest. He wasn't 100% sure of the way back to camp, but he was fairly certain that it was in this direction. He figured if he headed this way long enough something would look familiar and he could make his way back to camp that way. He really hoped the Dapplestorm would follow him so that if he got lost at least someone would come and get him.
--
Duskstar nodded as he lead the way to the fresh kill pile. He decided that getting her fed would be the number one priority. And after that, he thought that maybe she could get settled and that the medicine cat could come check on her. "Oh, it's very good. All the cats in this Clan thrive on it. Many kittypets have come here and said it was better than anything they had ever tasted in their lives."

(THE MOST PURE THING? Honestly, just murder me.)
Yelping, Dapplestorm scrambled back to his feet and shot after Pidgeonwing. As he ran, everything blurred together - the trees flanking him, the sky above, the scents of life erupting from every direction - and all his focus centered on the pounding of his feet against the earth. Expertly, he dodged trees and brush with the finesse of a cat who had been racing through these forests all his life.
The wind tore through his fur, and it felt - cleansing, somehow. Good. Free. He could still see Pidgeonwing darting along ahead of him, tail bobbing behind him, and his eyes narrowed in on that one point. Around him, the birds sang a joyful song, something light and unbound, and he picked up his pace.
It's like being a kit again, a part of his brain cut in, amused. And it was. He moved without thinking, responsibilities and reservations falling away, until he and Pidgeonwing were the only two cats left on earth.
...
(My snobby girl, oh my God.)
"You make a hard sell," she purred. "I'll have to take your word for it."
Below her, the pile of lifeless creatures certainly didn't look the most promising - in fact, it was almost a bit sad - but the scent radiating off of it made her mouth water. Licking her lips, she bent down and picked a plump squirrel from the pile. She set it down a few steps away and, tentatively, took her first bite.
Duskstar was right: for all her reservations about the lifestyle of the forest cats, the flavor of their prey really was indescribable. She swallowed quickly and took another bite, a larger one, and then another, and then another. Within a few moments, she had devolved into the ravenous creature she truly was and, all concern for manners and pride aside, tore into her meal with reckless fervor. She would have to apologize to Duskstar later for behaving so classlessly, because right now, all she could think about was how unfairly long it took to choke down each bite before she could have another.
