Welcome Welcome to PaintedClan, a roleplay centered on drawing and art! One of the most popular Clangen challenges is an artlocke, that is, drawing the major events of the game. Some people take this challenge further to make comics and more.
In most artlockes, one person is responsible for the entire Clan. But in PaintedClan, each person claims only one cat, and so each moon is a collaboration between many people! Even if you're not one of the participants of this challenge, I hope you enjoy scrolling through all the wonderful art we have in store for you <3
Joining Time moves slowly in PaintedClan, with each turn lasting an entire month. Because of this, the Clan will only rarely have openings for new cats (and players) to join the field. If you'd like to join when a spot is available, please send me a DM and I'll add you to the waitlist.
- - Rules - BE POLITE - Don't be mean or discriminate against players. Do not critique anyone's art unless they explicitly ask for critiques.
- BE RESPECTFUL - If you're drawing other players' cats in your scene, stick to their refs. If you're doing a comic, all players must agree on dialogue.
- BE PRESENT - Each moon lasts an entire month. Please try to get at least a sketch of your character done each moon. If you go two months with no art, you will lose your claim to a cat.
- BE SAFE - No major gore is allowed. Blood, injuries, and death can be depicted, but images with this content must have a content warning and must be under a spoiler box. If you are unsure if it's okay, it probably is too much.

Clangen This game will follow the events of a Clangen Clan hosted by me. Each month, you will get a report on your cat's events, thoughts, interactions, and patrols. It is up to you to decide how to represent these events, or what plot/character significance they hold, but all events in an update are canon and can be referenced by any player, regardless of ownership.
It is encouraged to collaborate with players in the discussion page to decide the details of interactions such as arguments, to best represent both characters. Controls There are several parts of the game you as a player can control.
- Relationship Status Lock - Ask me to toggle this setting for your cat, and they will no longer be able to gain or lose romantic like for other cats. Choose this if you want your cat to be aromatic, or if your cat has a mate you don't want to break up with.
- Kit Lock - Toggle this if you do not want your cat to be able to become a parent.
- Relationships - If your cat is flirting with another cat and you feel it doesn't make sense, or they have a rivalry that you don't approve of, let me know and I can change the relationship to better fit the arc you have planned. I won't micromanage a cat's relationships, but I am willing to make some changes within reason. Art All of these are valid responses to this roleplay! You can make as many replies as you'd like in a moon. Push yourself, get inspired, draw!
- A sketch or doodle of your cat interacting with any of their events - A headshot or fullbody with dialogue - An illustration of your cat in their environment - A comic or storyboard depicting a scene - An animatic or animation of a scene - Any of the above with a written response or story beneath.

PaintedClan PaintedClan lives on the western side of the mountain valley, nestled within the hills and stone. They are best known for their camp: nestled beside a sheer stone wall and a series of caverns, both brightly painted with murals and other art. Their camp is brightly illuminated by the dawn's light, their art best viewed in the morning hours, and so PaintedClan cats are often early risers.
They value creativity and innovation. Because the paths to their camp and hunting grounds are rather steep, they enjoy a natural protection from invasion and so don't typically spend as much time with fighting training, viewing it as time they could be spending on their artistic pursuits. They are good climbers and have their kits practice climbing at a young age. Map None yet Camp Not yet described Landmarks None yet described Borders - BoulderClan - the stoic and secluded BoulderClan shares their entire western border, as they are the only cats that live deeper in the mountains than PaintedClan does. BoulderClan is isolationist and only rarely interacts with PaintedClan and never with the other Clans in the valley. They're polite enough, if a bit odd. Their territory is very dangerous and they have the best fighters.
- OrioleClan - the nimble and loud This Clan of fleet-footed cats live in the open hills to the northeast. They have the largest territory and typically the most cats. They are quite friendly with PaintedClan, valuing song and dance, and the two groups often have friendly chats about their respective arts. They have the best hunters.
- ElmClan - the calm and logical ElmClan lives in the lower valley to the west, where thin forest runs to the river bank. They are the most level-headed Clan and have a history of not taking sides. They always have many mediators.
- RootClan - the spiritual and curious RootClan lives in the southeast, in the thick, dense forests that cover the lowlands. RootClan is the closest to the Moonpool and their warriors take the task of safeguarding StarClan very seriously. Trespasses in their territory are never forgiven. RootClan has the most variety of herbs, and have the best healers.

Smokestar There was nothing Smokestar liked more than watching the kits in her Clan thrive.
Smokestar had been content to watch Elmkit bat the grass-woven mouse toy across the stone alone--a kitten learned to hunt by doing, after all. She'd figure it out herself--but the leader had to admit that it was far more entertaining when Frostfern stepped in to give young Elmkit her first lesson. She lay on the ledge outside of her den. It was one of Smokestar's favorite perches: not only did the warm sun radiate off the stone, but it also overlooked one of the main socialization points in PaintedClan's camp, allowing her to keep an eye on the Clan's many kits and it's few warriors.
It also hosted one of PaintedClan's many temporary art walls. Unlike the sheltered spaces in the caverns, these paintings would be washed away with the new-leaf rain, leaving an empty canvas no PaintedClan could resist practicing upon. It had rained last night, so the only marks were a few berry-stained pawprints, probably from the kits. Though the blueberry-hued pawprints were Smokestar's own: she'd laid them early in the morning, right after the dawn, on her walk from her den to the fresh-kill pile.
It wasn't very technical, as far as artwork went, but she found it beautiful in its practicality: any cat that saw those pawprints would know she was up and about, had already eaten, and was available in her den if they needed her.
Cleaning the tart blueberry juice from her paws was an added bonus.
Smokestar smiled and tipped her head on her paw, listening to Frostfern and Elmkit without really hearing the words, letting their voices become a murmur in her ears. She flicked her tail. The pebbles rumbled with her contented purr.

FlintkitRegrets eating the bug he just caught
Flintkit wiggled his haunches, judging his pounce. A small, brown moth laid in front of him. He pounced, landing on the moth. “Yes!” He squealed with joy, catching the moth in his claw. Seeing the younger kits in the nursery, he padded over. “A good warrior always eats his catch,” He purred, before putting the moth in his jaws.
…
His face turned a green, with the moth wings sticking out of his mouth. He could hear warriors laughing behind him. “Euuuckkk!” Flintkit squealed, covering his mouth. Flintkit wailed, then ran for the nursery. This totally won’t haunt him forever.

Frostfern looked at the jaybird she’d caught, its beautiful blue feathers captivating her for a moment. Would be nice for the nursery…. Rustling dry grass and scattering pebbles alerted her- the dappled tabby looked up, noticing a mouse sniffing along the ground. She grins- easy catch! “Smokestar” She softly called to her patrol mate- pointing the mouse out. Smokestar goes for it- but a loose pebble has them both wincing. The mouse bolts, Frostfern leaps over her leader's crouched position. “Oops” She mews, running her chin over Smokestars ears “Don’t worry, I didn't see anything” Frostfern twinkles a laugh, gesturing for them to quickly move on and keep hunting. She hums to herself, maybe she should get started on the kits pre-training…at least brush up her own mouse hunting skills.

Honeykit was known as a bit of an optimist… or perhaps a little delusional. It really depended on who you talked to and if they found the chatty kit endearing or not. It was usually pretty 50/50. She’d been born with a lot to say! As soon as physically possible she was talking and she hadn’t stopped since. Honeykit was confident in her words if nothing else and she was certain to let anyone know. Even if it was simply the air around her or some unsuspecting clan mate that happened to be within earshot.
The young kit was currently being quite dramatic about her place in the clan. See, she was certain she was ready to be a warrior. Apprenticeship? Who needed that. Unless Starclan themself came down from the sky and said otherwise she was certain her time to become a warrior had come. Who cares that she was one of the youngest cats in the clan. Life was all about living in the moment and at this moment she was bored of being a kit.
“I could be the best Warrior the clan has ever seen.” Honeykit said to herself, tone serious “We don’t even know, they haven’t let me try. If they let me give it a shot I’m certain I could do it.” Realistically a one month old kit couldn’t do much but with the way she talked, the absolute confidence she had in herself, you might be convinced for a moment she was right.
Of course no sane leader would let her skip a whole step in the process, so for now she was stuck enjoying the kit life. The easy life where you sat around and played all day. Truly a rough and difficult task.
