New moon!! Lots of cats are jealous this moon? smh. also I totally headcanon that Scarletdrift being jealous of Stormmask's smarts and him trying to come up with a new hunting technique on patrol are totally connected somehow. Either his desire to be smarter made him try and think up new things, or the plan didn't work as well as he hoped and he thought Stormmask was so smart, she would have made it work better ]]

(AWWW DAPPLESWIPE!! I gotta write her and Frostfleck's interaction soon. I should be more motivated this week; the rogue ambush is really exciting!
Just a heads up, I may pass the torch for Dappleswipe in a few weeks. Graduation is coming up so I'll be busy! Time sure flies. I wanted to give people time to say they're interested in claiming her when I'm ready.)

Heavy »
chats with stormmask about starclan & being a medicine cat - Sand envious of how put together brightleaf seems despite being sick
Once again Heavy found herself in the medicine cat den. She often ended up in the healer’s abode, whether that be because she wanted to spend time with Stormmask, check on her still sick daughter, or simply bask in the familiarity of the den that had once been her home for seasons as she healed from her broken back. Today, however, she was on a mixed mission - the calico wanted to check on her daughter to see how she was healing while also wanting to check in on Stormmask and offer a helping paw if the medicine cat needed to gather herbs.
Slipping inside the familiar den, Heavy paused and turned to observe the nest her daughter currently resided in. The young ginger and white warrior was curled in her nest, deep in slumber, yet even from here Heavy could hear the roughness of each breath Brightleaf took. Heavy’s heart constricted in sorrow. How long had Brightleaf been stuck in the den sick? Three moons now? However long it was, it was too long in Heavy’s opinion. All she wanted was for her daughter to be safe and healthy - she wanted that for all her kits, but Brightleaf was the one who had been dealing with yellowcough for moons now. The calico recalled her bout with the sickness last leaf-bare. It had been right after she had miraculously healed from her broken back. Her recovery had almost sparked a belief in StarClan until sickness struck her and Slatefoot - then Slatekit - down. It had been unfair. Cruel, even, for a miracle to happen only to be ruined by a life-threatening illness. Heavy had been miserable in those moons.
Blue eyes narrowed ever so slightly as she gazed down upon her sleeping daughter. In the moment Brightleaf looked so peaceful if one could forget the faint wheezing that accompanied her breathing. Heavy didn’t remember getting it so easy when she had been sick. For a split second a worm of jealousy wriggled inside the molly only for her to shake it away as quickly as it had appeared. There was no sense in being jealous over her daughter, especially because her daughter looked to be “having it easy” while dealing with yellowcough. Yellowcough was no easy matter no matter what. Besides, she had better things to do than encourage those thoughts.
Turning to pad deeper into the den, Heavy called for Stormmask, inquiring if the gray tabby needed any assistance.
--- Snow crunched under paw as the warrior and medicine cat traversed the wintery territory. Every now and then Heavy had to pause in her steps to flick melting snowfall from her whiskers. She fluffed out her fur, hoping to keep herself as warm as possible; Heavy was lucky to have thick fur that insulated her from most of the blustering winds that sometimes shot through the bare trees of leaf-bare.
Again Heavy was reminded of how last leaf-bare she had been cooped up inside the medicine cat den. Yellowcough had gathered in her chest like a malicious nest of mice. Even Slatefoot had been infected, and Heavy had worried deeply over her kit. While the disease had been brutal, taking Icepath and Deerleaf both, Heavy and Slatefoot had managed to survive, even if Heavy had had doubts at times. A shiver of fear rolled through her as she recalled the dream she had had one night in the middle of a raging fever, a nightmare of how she had woken up to find Slatekit stiff and cold at her side. The dream had been so vivid and so real… The calico molly teased a nip against her tongue to snap her out of the thoughts. Now was not the time to dwindle on such things.
However, it did lead her to another thoughtful trail.
Heavy turned her blue eyes onto Stormmask. As the Clan’s medicine cat, Stormmask was not only just a healer, but a seer of sorts as well. The ancestors of all four Clans communicated with her and offered her guidance in times of need. The idea of StarClan sounded nice. It was reassuring to hear that loved ones were waiting in the stars to be reunited, and for a few days Heavy had felt the inklings of belief growing inside her, until yellowcough had shattered those ideas. ”Stormmask,” the calico started slowly, wanting to word her question in a way that wouldn’t offend the other molly, ”can I ask exactly how StarClan guides you? And how is it that only medicine cats get to have a bond with them?” Perhaps these were kit level questions, but Heavy needed to know. Having not grown up in a Clan, she was missing a lot of pieces that Clanborn cats would have. Sure, she knew more about how to be a Clan cat than she did a few seasons ago, but Heavy was still learning, and she doubted she’d ever be done learning by the time she herself joined the rest of the dead.
Heavy »
asks stemriver how he's doing - @ --
Leaf-bare rarely allowed any warrior spare time. Cats were always either outside hunting or checking borders, especially after FlowerClan’s attempts at moving the border just last moon. The hostile Clan had not retaliated after Heavy, Spottedfur, Thrushfleck, and Stemriver had marked the border back to its normal area. Perhaps FlowerClan had understood what YewClan was telling them and decided to back down. Heavy hoped for that at least. The last thing YewClan needed was an unnecessary battle, especially now that Bubblingstar was recovering from a broken bone and Brightleaf was still sick with yellowcough. They were down two fine warriors at the moment. Going into battle would not be a wise decision.
Taking the chance to sit back and relax with a familiar Clanmate, Heavy took a seat beside Stemriver, purring softly as she breathed in the tom’s comforting scent. ”How have you been lately? We haven’t had much time to just talk lately,” she pointed out with a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. They weren’t mates, and perhaps would never be, but Stemriver held a special place in Heavy’s heart. He had been her first true friend after being brought into YewClan’s sanctuary. He had been there for her when she had been beating herself up, when she had doubted that she’d ever be useful to the Clan that had taken her in when they didn’t have to. Not only that but he was the father of her kits. Their bond was strong, and that’s all Heavy needed. Was to know Stemriver would stand beside her just as she would him, and getting to spend some quality downtime with him was always something she would cherish.
”Ready for leaf-bare to be over with,” the tom huffed as he fluffed his fur out even more, paws shuffling underneath his chest to draw in more warmth to his body.
Heavy chuffed at his response, settling in closer to the spotted tom to offer him her body warmth. The day was rather chilly, more snow falling from the dove gray sky above. ”I don’t mind the cold all that much, but I will be happy when prey is running again. I miss going to bed full.”
This time Stemriver chuffed in his own amusement, tail twitching with good humor despite the harsh weather that was circulating throughout camp. ”A plump rabbit would be good right about now,” he mewed, swiping his tongue over his jaw as if imagining the savory flavor of meaty prey.
”A rabbit would be nice, but I’d much prefer a fat mouse. Maybe even a juicy cardinal.” It felt like it had been eons ago since she had last enjoyed the taste of prey that wasn’t cold by the time it was brought back to camp. Living off of cold, stringy food the last few moons left a lot to be desired.
”Any prey that isn’t just bone would be nice right about now,” Stemriver mewed.
Heavy nodded her agreement. ”I couldn’t agree with that more.”
The two remained huddled against one another, drifting off into a comfortable silence, simply enjoying the presence of having one another on the cold leaf-bare day.

Slatefoot »
border patrol with dappleswipe - lazzylake stemriver & thrushfleck - @ --
Slatefoot vibrated with excitement as she followed her fellow Clanmates out into the snow. Tail held high the rosette-splashed warrior kept in pace just beside Dappleswipe, determined to show the deputy that she was the perfect warrior to have on this border patrol - or any patrol really. She just wanted the deputy to see her as an important asset to the Clan, and perhaps, one day, Dappleswipe would see that Slatefoot had an important part to play in the leadership of her Clan.
From time to time Slatefoot would take a moment to breathe in the scents around her and her patrol. Nothing was out of the ordinary. It was just the same scents of snow and decayed leaf litter, but this was a border patrol. Slatefoot knew she had to be on the alert. Hadn’t FlowerClan tried to pull something just last moon? Sure, they weren’t checking the FlowerClan border, but the last thing Slatefoot wanted was for FlowerClan to pull something on the patrol. She maybe had kin that lived in the rolling hills and fields of moorland grass, but that wasn’t going to stop the molly from defending YewClan. YewClan was her home through and through. She may not share the same blood that coursed through the veins of other YewClan warriors, but Slatefoot was as loyal to her Clan as any.
A rustling nearby caught the molly’s attention. Slatefoot swiveled her ears forward, straining them to make out any other noises that were possibly coming from the thick evergreen bushes not too far off. Nothing was catching her attention. She remained tense, looking to Dappleswipe to see if the deputy had registered anything.
But rather than Dappleswipe calling out for attention, it was Slatefoot’s father and littermate who, in unison, cried out, ”Ambush!”
Before Slatefoot could even register what was happening, paws slammed into her flank, knocking the breath out of her. She twisted and squirmed, spitting fury as she came face to face with a scrawny, scarred up brown tabby tom. His breath reeked of crow-food as he hissed in Slatefoot’s face, but the young warrior was not deterred. She lashed out with all her might, ready to pummel her attacker and win this battle alongside her Clanmates.[ i tried doing the slate & stem scene too but i am too sleepy for that will try tomorrow tho =u= ]

@ yall freshkill update dropped.
Would yall like to turn it on? Or leave the game how it was? There is a toggle to turn the mechanic off
It would add complexity and new events, but also a decent bit of danger. If we turn it on, I'll have to rebalance hunting and border patrols so we can ensure we have enough prey (I was kinda meaning to do it anyways? Have smaller patrols to increase relationships and make roleplaying easier. But it would make border patrols kinda more dangerous? like that rogue patrol would NOT have went well with less than four cats...)

Stormmask : questions of StarClan with Heavy Stormmask was as giddy as a kit when she saw Heavy enter her den. Even though she knew she was checking on Brightleaf, the medicine cat was admiring her from afar. There was just something special about Heavy that made her heart beat so fast yet it felt surreal. She would have never believed that another cat could make her feel this way, but somehow the calico did just that.
When asked for help, Stormmask agreed and the two were off into the snow covered territory. The sound of snow crunching beneath their paws and the whistling winds were easy for the grey tabby to ignore. She was focused on Heavy and finding some herbs today. It would take them longer than usual due to the snow, but Stormmask didn’t mind for now. After all, she was in the presence of the cat she admired so much.
Her copper eyes were peeled for any colorful herbs that had some life to them. Even a tiny bit of lungwort would be enough to help Brightleaf, who was still sick with yellowcough. She refused to fail like she did last leafbare when Icepath and Deerleaf were taken from the clan. Icepath’s death had especially affected the grey tabby molly; she couldn’t explain her devotion to her mentor. She saw Icepath as a second mother as Stormmask had only met her biological mother, Mosspod, in one of her dreams. It was not often that her mother walked in her dreams and Icepath had yet to appear in them too. Was she going to fail Brightleaf this moon like she had failed Deerleaf and Icepath?
She didn’t want to think so deeply about her failures for it pained the medicine cat to even think about her former mentor. The sound of Heavy’s voice pushed her thoughts away quickly and didn’t give Stormmask a chance to dwell anymore. The grey tabby glanced at the blue-eyed molly, quite surprised by her question. Heavy had never asked her about her duties or StarClan for as long as she had known her. Stormmask’s copper gaze brightened as excitement filled her heart.
"StarClan guides me by speaking with me. Whether it is in my dreams or when I visit the other medicine cats, they show me visions that can determine something in the future," she explained, although her explanation sounded complicated. "A few moons ago, when they were trying to speak with me, they left little messages behind in my dreams. They were signs of what’s to come for YewClan. I put a lot of my faith in our ancestors because I know they would never lead us the wrong way."
Stormmask came to a pause, thinking hard about the long-haired calico’s second question. "I think some of us are born with the ability to communicate with StarClan. It makes our bond with our ancestors more precious," she answered, gazing at Heavy. "Not every cat can speak with the dead, especially if they don’t believe. We are fortunate enough to be able to communicate with them at all."

[ oohh, new update o: I'm not sure yet. I'd like to see how it works, so I'm open to turning it on. How many moons of leafbare do we have left? ] This was the last moon of leafbare ^^ Also to note: We are on forest territory, which is mentioned to be a "medium" difficulty for prey catching (grasslands being "easy" and mountains being "hard"; desert, still unimplemented, was supposed to be the "very hard" option when cruel season came out. I don't know where the ocean fits? I think it was also supposed to be "medium" but I feel I NEVER get good hunting patrol outcomes there sooo) I'm def going to play around with it (there are a LOT more buttons than when I tested it on the dev branch) so at least I should be familiar with using it before we turn it on. I'll also have to write up the options for yall in terms of toggles each moon. We might have to use a poll each moon to decide how prey is rationed? Default will of course just be "feed all hungry cats" but there might be times when rationing before leaf-bare might be a strategic play, and there are ways to change who is fed more in times of emergency and stuff. I don't know if the belly mechanic interacts with healing and injuries. I'd assume so. ]]

Heavy »
Heavy didn’t believe in StarClan, that was something she wasn’t afraid to admit. Even in the presence of Stormmask she would tell the gray tabby that she had no belief in the starry ancestors that were said to walk among the stars. She knew that the ancestors meant a lot to Stormmask, and Heavy wanted nothing more than to stay on the medicine cat’s good side - for all the feelings she had for Stemriver, she felt just about the same for Stormmask - but why lie and say she believed in something she didn’t? There was no point in pretending to believe in dead cats with stars in their fur. Perhaps her thought process would be different if she had been born in the Clan, but finding belief for something she had never believed before was easier said than done.
Between keeping an eye out for anything floral peeking out of the snow, Heavy listened to Stormmask as she answered the questions she had poised just moments before. She soon paused in her search to give the medicine cat her full attention. Stormmask’s explanation was more than the calico had expected; perhaps she should have expected such a long answer. This was something Stormmask clearly cared a lot about. It almost made Heavy feel bad for not sharing the same beliefs. It was clear to the warrior that Stormmask carried a deep fondness toward the concept of StarClan and truly did believe in them with every fiber of her being. How could she not believe in them when she was so sure that they communicated with her? Heavy recalled one of the conversations she had had with Spottedfur once before, back when she had recently discovered she was to bear kits. Stormmask’s mother had passed not long after Stormmask had been born. It would be no surprise if the medicine cat had no memories of her mother. Was this the reason why Stormmask had found her paws on the path of a medicine cat? Had she always believed in StarClan so fiercely that she wanted to take on the role that would get her closer to her mother?
Grief swelled in the calico’s chest. The memory of her own mother gathered in her mind, familiar flashes of a battle scarred ginger and white tabby pelt dancing just behind her eyes. Heavy’s mother had been a scrappy molly with a sharp tongue and even sharper protectiveness over her kits. She had been a tough love sort of parent, and while Heavy and her mother didn’t always get along, she was grateful now more than ever that she had been able to spend time with her mother and get to know her. She couldn’t imagine how Stormmask felt growing up without a mother to guide her.
”Did you decide to become a medicine cat because of your mother?” She was hesitant to ask, but the words tumbled off her tongue before she could stop herself. Heavy’s ears grew warm with embarrassment. Her eyes shifted away from Stormmask, paws shuffling deeper into the snow. ”I mean…you don’t have to answer, especially if it’s a sore subject…” For all the time Heavy had spent with Stormmask, she knew not about how the gray tabby reacted when her mother came up into conversation. There was doubt in Heavy that the medicine cat would grow angry as she couldn’t recall a time when the healer grew hostile, but there was always room for firsts.

Dappleswipe Border Patrol: Rouge ambush!
Dappleswipe initially intended to set new markers on the boundary with PlumClan. She thought the trio of Stemriver, Thrushfleck, and Slatefoot would make an excellent pairing. The former two worked well together as a father-son pair, and Bubblingstar's former apprentice proved to be a valuable asset recently. Circling through the mixed woodland, the deputy questioned how many moons YewClan would spend only having warriors in their ranks. Hopefully the promise of new-leaf will offer younger cats to pass skills onto. Dappleswipe was always eager for that.
The black and orange molly paused briefly as a rustle caught Slatefoot's attention. She dismissed it as nothing more that the scurrying of a large mouse. Then, the forest erupted, all at once. It took one word to trigger the deputy's fight or flight reflexes.
"Ambush!"
The tortoiseshell she-cat whipped around to face a gang of unfamiliar felines. She replied with a startled yowl, chagrined to see rogues have sneakily slipped under her radar. One of them, a smelly brown tom, hurtled towards Slatefoot, knocking the young warrior off their feet. Stemriver and Thrushfleck were brawling together to fend off two thick-set tabbies. Meanwhile, Dappleswipe was caught off-guard by a large black and white tom that had her pinned to the snow stricken floor. Joining him, a patchy furred calico bluntly struck at her ears. Wincing, Dappleswipe quickly realized that all her clanmates were paired up with one rogue each. Except her.
Channeling all her untapped energy, Dappleswipe kicked off the black and white cat that pinned her and set her targets on the calico. As they attempted to flee, the deputy pinned down their tail and bit hard. The adversary crowed in pain, which gave Dappleswipe ample time to dodge and surrender. Above the calamity, Dappleswipe cried out to the cats on patrol.
"We're outmatched! Warriors, retreat!"
ooc: (A little bit short for my liking but it'll do. I'll get Dappleswipe and Frostfleck pip tomorrow mabye?? Super excited I have so many ideas for her dream sequence!)

BUBBLINGSTAR - Treated, helps out Brightleaf Bubblingstar huffed as the scent of garlic reached his nose, piercing through the mouth-watering scent of the squirrel in front of him. He didn't know how Storm-mask expected him to eat with that stench clouding up his den! Grumbling, the elder tom struggled up onto his paws, heavily favoring his left side. He wasn't supposed to move, but he couldn't stay cooped up in here, alone no less, any longer. Bubblingstar snagged the squirrel as he limped free of his stuffy den; somewhat dismayed to see the camp mostly empty. He supposed he couldn't blame the healthier, younger cats for being busy. Except... he turned toward the medicine den with his ears perked. Brightleaf was still sick wasn't she? Well, what Storm-mask didn't know can't hurt her! Squirrel in tow, Bubblingstar hobbled off to join the sick warrior before their medicine cat could catch him.

ScarletdriftHunting Patrol with Mistleheart and Spottedfur - Sapphirejas , Sand Tries to set a good example for younger warriorsIs envious of Stormmask's knowledgeScarletdrift pads out of camp with Mistleheart and Spottedfur, an idea forming in his head. He waited until they were further out into clan territory, wanting to get out of camp first."I was thinking we could hunt squirrels today" Scarletdrift said, rolling a pine nut over to him. "I have an idea on a new tactic. We could use pine nuts to lure them out of hiding, then kill them once they get close!" He said, looking at the two cats. He wanted to leave a legacy behind for his clan, and maybe this squirrel tactic would do it. And it might inspire younger cats to invent other new tactics for hunting different prey. He might not be as smart as Stormmask, but he was smart in his own way.
The three cats were hiding in the bushes surrounding the clearing, a series of pine nuts strewn about the place. A squirrels paradise... hopefully. He had tried to conceal his scent as much as he could, and he hoped the prey wouldn't notice his white-and-ginger pelt sticking out around the foliage. Finally! A squirrel popped out of a bush on the far end of the clearing, running over to one of the pine nuts. It picked one up and looked around, inspecting the clearing. Scarletdrift couldn't wait any longer. He jumped out of his bush, startling the squirrel. It managed to run a few paces, before he caught up to it and killed it. Then, he returned to his bush. After another more squirrel had been caught, the cats decided to move on. "Where should we go? Back to camo or try our luck in another clearing?"
Brightleaf Is given lungwort as treatment for yellowcough Watches Slatefoot Spar Helped out by Bubblingstar - jaybun!
Brightleaf hated lugwart. It tasted like greens, and bitter. As a young warrior she should not be sitting in a nest in the medicine den, trying to fight yellowcough. She should be running around outside on patrol, caring for her clan! She should be sparing with her siblings, who were facing off in the clearing right now. But, instead, she was sitting outside of the medicine den watching them spar instead. Hunting had always been more appealing to her, but maybe she could get better by watching them. After a bit, Brightleaf got cold just sitting there, so she padded back into the medicine den.
Brightleaf coughed, closing her eyes as it shakes her body. Her stomach rumbled, but she didn't feel like getting up right now, she was too weak. As of right now, she was sharing the den with Bubblingstar, but his nest was further away, Stormmask's attempts to keep him away from her, so he wouldn't get the sickness as well as a broken bone. When she opened her eyes, Bubblingstar was there, and he was holding a squirrel! "Wow! I wonder who caught that! It's so big! Do you want to share?" She asked. Brightleaf hadn't gotten that many visitors, and she was eager to talk to another cat that wasn't Stormmask.

Slatefoot »
border patrol with dappleswipe - lazzylake stemriver & thrushfleck - @ --
Claws scored through Slatefoot’s pelt, sharp tips meeting with her flesh. She hissed in pain as she lashed out with her own claws, the bones in her arm shuddering with the force of impact. A pained screech erupted from the brown tabby that had scrabbled atop her just moments ago; his hesitation was just enough wiggle room to allow Slatefoot to weasel away from him and his barrage of attacks that were sure to come. Now a few pawsteps away from her attacker she hissed fiercely in his direction, adrenaline pumping through her veins and masking the stinging pain of where claws and teeth had torn into her. Slatefoot channeled everything she had. This was what Bubblingstar had prepared her for during all their battle training sessions. If she were to come out victorious she needed to stay one step ahead of her opponent.
”We’re outmatched! Warriors, retreat!”
Dappleswipe’s call rang out in the midst of the battle. Slatefoot turned to look at the deputy, eyes wide and questioning. Were they not going to stand their ground and fight? These rogues were mangy and underfed. Sure, the Clan cats weren’t all that well fed either, but they had skill and teamwork on their side while these rogues probably had no idea how to work together. The young warrior wanted to argue and continue the battle, but she held her tongue and reminded herself that leaf-bare was hard enough already. Having warriors with injuries that could have been avoided was the last thing they needed right now.
With one last snarl she hissed at the rogues who glared at the Clan cats with dark malice in their eyes. ”Stay off our territory or we’ll skin you all!” Slatefoot lashed her tail before turning and bounding off to join the rest of her Clanmates.
Once far enough from the rogues that she knew they wouldn’t be following, Slatefoot slowed her pace. It had only taken her a few seconds to outrun the others given just how fast she could be on her paws. She turned to Dappleswipe once the deputy was near. ”We need to tell Bubblingstar about this.” Her former mentor was currently resting to mend a broken bone, but he was still leader and he deserved to know that there were hostile rogues near their border. It would have to be something that required careful observation. YewClan couldn’t afford a ragtag group of rogues making a home nearby.

Spottedfur : hunting patrol with Scarletdrift & Mistleheart Spottedfur followed Scarletdrift, excited for a day of hunting. Despite the snow, he was excited to hunt. Leafbare wouldn’t be around for much longer and that in itself made him glad. Once Scarletdrift came to a halt, the silver speckled tom listened to the other warrior. The idea of using pine nuts to lure the squirrels to the warriors was a fine idea! ”Sounds like it’s worth a shot,” he meowed with a sharp nod.
Spottedfur hid behind the bushes with Scarletdrift and Mistleheart. His silver gaze fixated on the pine nuts as they waited for the squirrels to show. It wasn’t long until a squirrel popped out of a bush and entered the small clearing. Its beady black eyes noticed the pine nut immediately and approached it. Spottedfur watched carefully as Scarletdrift couldn’t wait any longer– the tom really wanted to get the squirrel. Although his first kill wasn’t as swift as he hoped, but it was good enough!
The speckled warrior noticed a squirrel as it eased up to a pine nut, trying to grasp it in its little paws. He snuck up on the squirrel, killing it with one bite to the neck. It was tedious work, but the group was doing quite well for themselves. As soon as Scarletdrift had mentioned moving on or heading back to camp, Spottedfur paused to think. ”I think we can head back to camp, but it’s up to you,” he replied, glancing at the ginger and white tom.

Stormmask : questions about StarClan with Heavy Stormmask began to realize that her explanation to Heavy was a bit long and confusing. She could understand the concept easily whereas Heavy could not which left her baffled. Was it so hard to know that cats with stars in their pelt could talk to medicine cats? That they could share prophecies or signs? To Stormmask, everything she knew about StarClan was plausible. They had communicated with her before and her faith in them was quite strong and she surely wouldn't doubt StarClan.
The grey tabby could remember her first days in the medicine cat den as a kit. She liked to play fun and games with Icepath, sometimes hiding in the molly's den to scare her. She would ask about the strange, sharp scents that came from the herb storage. She wondered if other cats felt the same about healing as she did. Obviously, they didn't, but maybe one day a cat would come along and want to learn the ways of a medicine cat. At the sound of the calico's hesitant question, Stormmask's ears flicked gently. No cat had ever asked her if her mother was the reason for her path in life. She let out a soft sigh, wondering how to answer Heavy. Her mother wasn't the reason, she knew that. Though Stormmask knew that the moment she saw her mother in StarClan was heart wrenching. ”I can answer, I think it’s best that I do. Even though I met my mother in StarClan, she wasn’t the reason,” she answered between sorrow-filled gasps. She then cleared her throat. ”I found comfort and enjoyment in the medicine cat den because of Icepath, my former mentor. She was like a second mother to me. Our bond was strong and it was like no other that I have had before. I… miss her.”
The tabby became quiet, fighting back the urge to break down in front of Heavy. She certainly wasn’t going to do that and make the pretty calico feel guilty. It wasn’t her fault– it was no one’s fault clearly. Stormmask’s cold paws straggled along as the snow attached itself to her grey fur. She was tempted to ask Heavy why she didn’t understand her belief in StarClan, but she held back. If the long-haired calico didn’t understand, then she wasn’t going to be the one to convince her. It was Heavy’s decision to make, not Stormmask’s. ”Thank you for coming with me,” she added softly.

[[ hey, yall! I know it's moon day but I think it's time to do some voting! The new prey system is implemented. I thought this system would be a toggle, but it's fully implemented in expanded mode and cannot be turned off. So next moon, we start with the prey and nutrition mechanics. Before we do, though, I want to make sure everyone is comfortable with what this system does and how it will impact the Clan. I also want to take a minute to rethink default patrols and have a few days to collect yall's input on that. Currently, default patrols are, in order: mentor + apprentice training patrols (every other moon) healer +1 random / healer solo (alternating) (min/max) +3/4 random border patrol +2/3 hunting patrol Now that all three of Heavy's litter are warriors, most patrols are +4 border +3 hunting which, at least to me from the outside looking in, feel a bit clunky and hard to complete within the time span. As I realize the prey mechanic is not optional, I think now would be a good time to reevaluate default patrols, so the Clan has more than one opportunity to hunt and isn't screwed over by a single bad roll where no prey is caught all moon. This is a low chance, and prey is added to the pile passively every moon skip, but with the current system, catching no prey at all is a higher risk than I would feel comfortable imposing upon yall. I'm just the man in the sky making it all happen, so I'd like to have yall's discussion on patrol balancing and what you guys feel is right. I have been toggling the "cats can have kits with unknown second parent" aka the half-Clan and half-loner kits, every 12 moons/one year. It is currently ON, but is set to go OFF next moon. Because the Clan is so small at only 11 cats (and no half-Clan kits have occurred yet) I would also like to propose keeping it on longer until we get a few more litters. Let me know if any of you are against this ^^ I think yall will be on board with more kits and drama, but it does mean that some cats might end up with half-Clan or half-loner kits. If anyone has any questions about the how the nutrition update works, uh. I'm still working at figuring it out myself, if there's one gripe I have with Clangen it's a lack of explicit patch notes. I didn't want to spoil my own enjoyment by digging through the raw files but I'm getting to the point where I might just do that, as my 30 moon playthrough of a Clan hasn't gotten any major events or problems with this mechanic and idk if I'm just lucky (or unlucky) or if it really did launch rather bare-bones, but yeah. I want to be a little better informed before I make any statements. I do have an annotated couple of moons >> here<< if you're curious what the system looks like, and of course the game is free to play yourself and explore! Anyways, this is getting really long for an announcement so, uh. TL;DR: Prey update is going next moon (MONDAY). Rebalancing patrols? What do yall think? More hunting patrols? Smaller patrols? Half-Clan kit toggle staying on for extra time: thoughts? ]]

from my experience with the prey update so far, 3-4 cats seems to get you the most bang for your buck while hunting! i'd also love to see some more kits, half-clan or otherwise.

I think that smaller patrols would be fun. I am also up for more kits, and halfclan/loner kits would be interesting! How does the clan react? How do the kits react when they find out? Could be an intresting side-plot thing.

[ for sure keep the unknown second parent toggle on! it's so weird that no kits have come from that though, usually when I run a Clangen and have that toggled on i have to turn it back off after like six moons because im overrun with kits o: fate just hates little ol' yewclan, rip ]

I agree with everyone else, kits with unknown parents should be on, because YewClan is SO small and Heavy’s kits are now warriors. I haven’t wrote anything yesterday because I don’t have much motivation after nothing really is happening in the Clan for the past year after the yellowcough outbreak. I would like more things to happen, like cats joining and kits being born. 😊👍

( I’ve been playing with the new prey update and I’ve noticed that smaller patrols (2-3 cats) will get you enough prey depending on the clan size. Mine’s only 1 page and several have the hunting attribute.
I’m good with smaller patrols and more hunting patrols as long as it doesn’t stretch the clan thin. Keep the toggle on— it’s a good one and it’s quite odd that we don’t have any half clan kits yet. )
