Tigertail frowned. "What's that supposed to mean...how do you know my name?"

"I'm a reaper." He said, and his voice was laced with anger. "And that means I have a job to do. I can't do my job if I'm stuck in this miserable hole of self-pity. Are understanding any of this?"

Tigertail frowned, choosing to ignore the attitude. "Reaper...you're another monster, right? Like the toothy cat who was just here?"

Ianuarius shut his eyes, apparently trying to stay calm. "Yes. From your perspective, I can see how you would reach that conclusion. But I am not a common monster, and I am not driven by pure instinct. We don't have time for this. What happened before they began to fall?"

"Well..." said Tigertail warily. "Our Prophet died. Right when the strange things started happening."

"Yes, that makes sense. Brightsoul." The name rolled as easily off his tongue as Tigertail's had. "Prophets are too connected with the other worlds. "Was it bloody?" He looked calmly at the other cat, as if the question was normal.
Weaselstar held his tongue, but moved forward so he was standing beside Tigertail. Ianuarius ignored him.

Tigertail flattened his ears and shot the stranger a pained look. "Yeah. It was." he said quietly. "Now how. Do you know. My name?" he growled, putting emphasis on each part.

Ianuarius uttered a soft growl, deep in his throat. "Listen, mouse. There's an orange tabby cat, sitting in a group of hungry cats. There's half a dead squirrel , the other half has been eaten too the bone. The starving little things know there isn't enough to keep everyone alive, so they turn on the poor gentle orange, who didn't see it coming until he was bleeding out from his neck. Sound familiar?" The reaper was describing in detail Tigertail's death.

Tigertail growled deep in his throat, the vengeful spirit inside him suddenly tugging at his brain. "Were you there?" he asked quietly.

"Of course I was there." Ianuariuas's voice was somehow both gentle and cold, and it was very quiet but easily heard. "It's my job to be there. I reaped your soul."

Tigertail froze, suddenly understanding. "Stonestep." he said, remembering the name of the "cat" who had led him here.

"Yes." Ianuarius' eyes watched Tigertail's, seeing the understanding dawn in them. He shook his head. "Listen. You normals are now at the bottom of the food chain. Nearly everything out there wants you dead. Weaselstar is not a good leader, and you are all unprepared."

"Normals?" said Mistystep, stepping forward to address the Reaper. "You mean ghosts, right?"
"We've all seen monsters today." said Tigertail. "Where did they come from?"

The reaper seemed to decide Mistystep's question answered itself, for he ignored it. "There isn't time to satisfy your curiosity. They're here now, and this world is a war zone. If you want to live, organize yourselves. Stop living due to luck. And please abandon your ingrained sense of mercy, peace, right and wrong."

Tigertail flicked an ear back, a silent Step up already to Weaselstar. "What would you suggest we do?" he asked Ianuarius.

Weaselstar, however, didn't seem to see the need. The conversation was still getting done, wasn't it? He'd step up when it came time to act.
"I don't suggest anything." Ianuarius said simply. "I can't help you. Not since I became trapped in your tiny, irrelevant world. All I can do is give you advice, namely, if you see something you don't understand, fight or flee. Take me, for example. You walked up to me like a kit on their first day out of the den. I could have eaten you."
"So you won't help us?" Wrenkit challenged.

"But you didn't." said Tigertail. "So I think we'll keep trying to make allies, thanks."

"Wow." Ianuarius narrowed his strange, white eyes and shook his head slowly, gazing incredulously at Tigertail. "Now I understand why you died."
"That's enough." Weaselstar finally stepped forward. "Are you with us or not?"
"With you?" The eyes switched to the leader's for a second, then back to the orange tom. "I don't like you, Weaselstar."

"Can I come with you?" said Mistystep suddenly. Her youthful eyes were wide and nervous, and clearly she felt safer with a 'friendly' monster than with her usual group.
"Misty!" said Tigertail sharply. "Are you kidding?"

"Misty, don't do this." Weaselstar looked at her seriously, her eyes widening. "You don't know him. We're your family, you can't just abandon us. Not after Brightsoul."
Ianuarius tilted his head, clearly surprised by the request. "I'm a reaper. Why in the world would you want to come with me?"

"I don't know you either. I knew Falconstar." said Mistystep coldly, an iciness creeping into her gaze to hide the fear and confusion. "I've been dead for a year. One year. And now there are monsters, and even the most senior ghosts don't have a clue what to do about it." She turned back to Ianuarius. "I'm safer with you. And you don't know this territory. You need me as much as I need you."

Weaselstar blinked at the coldness of her words. "If you go with him, it's forever." He told her, sincerely.
Ianuarius gazed at her thoughtfully for about a minute, considering. "Yes." He decided, glancing at the rest of the group. "For the rest of you, next time you see a poor wounded creature, run." He advised.

Mistystep flattened her ears, pelt bristling with sadness. "Fine." she said, turning to go without another word.
"Not likely." said Tigertail rebelliously, twitching his tail.

Weaselstar glanced at Tigertail, eyes narrowing slightly in an unreadable frown. He didn't comment, just looked back at Mistystep.
Ianuarius's eyes slid to Tigertail for a half second, then he turned and led the way, walking in a fast pace he could keep up for a good long time.
"What was that?" Wrenkit turned to Tigertail and Weaselstar, eyes wide. "What just happened?"

"We met a monster, and lost a friend." said Tigertail poetically. He turned to Weaselstar. "Can I talk to you? Privately?"

"Of course." Weaselstar dipped his head to Wrenkit, and led the way to his den. Once inside, turned to face Tigertail and sat down, allowing the other to start.

"What was that?" he said as soon as they were out of earshot. "What part of being leader means 'passively observe' to you?"

"You seemed to have it covered." Weaselstar answered. "What about your comment? Are you expecting Mistystep back after that?"

|
|

"I don't expect Misty back at all, that had nothing to do with her." He narrowed his eyes. "Someone had to stand up to the wounded creature comment, and it wasn't gonna be you."

Weaselstar blinked, caught off guard with that one. "Well, considering the last 'wounded creature' we saw - before the guy who took your soul, that is - was a cat that openly expressed the desire to drink you. I was about ready to thank him for the good advice."
