Mistystep had her eyes tightly closed, not daring to look.
"So you're a glorified reaper?" said Belial, apparently unfazed. "How terrifying." Death didn't bother to supply her with an answer. He simply turned back to Wrenkit. "I am, quite literally, Death itself." he said bluntly.

Wrenkit visibly flinched when he looked at her, staring hard at the ground and trembling violently. However, her obvious terror wasn't enough to stop a note of indignation from creeping into her voice. "So....you killed me?"
"Why are you bothering with us, then?" Amriel broke in through gritted teeth, fighting the feeling of despair.

Death looked around at the lot of them. "Yes. Well. I see it may be impossible for us to carry on a conversation this way. I had forgotten how intimidating my true form is to mortals." He vanished in a puff of smoke, then reappeared. Now his power felt...muted, somewhat. Calmer. Still extremely intimidating, but in a less blinding way. "There. Better?" he said impatiently.

Most of the ghosts straightened somewhat, Amriel seemed to be able to bypass the feeling with her own power now that it was muted. "So." She challenged for the second time. "Why are you bothering with us? If you're...Death...aren't you more powerful than any of us?"

"Oh, undoubtedly. I could kill any one of you with a flick of my tail, as a matter of fact. But why would I do that?" he asked. "I've been around since the beginning of time, Amriel. Why do you assume I would go on a mad killing spree just because some angels smashed up the natural order?"
"Angels...?" said Suriel under his breath.

Angels....Amriel felt a bit of a shock go through her at this, but she shoved it away, determined to keep pushing Death. "I didn't say that." She answered calmly. "I asked why you're bothering with us at all."

"My reasons are my own." said Death simply. "You can join me, or not. I don't really care. But you should know, that at the moment I am preventing about three thousand demons and nastier things from converging on your location. Angels give off quite a beacon." He smiled smugly.

Wrenkit glanced at Suriel, obviously feeling him to be the one to make this call. Weaselstar too gave Suriel a quick look, though it was more one of humorless curiosity than trust
Amriel seemed to consider this. She suspected he simply liked keeping them in the dark, he seemed like the type to get enjoyment out of it. She looked at Belial for a half-second before replying. "Fine. It's the best plan I've heard so far."

Two moons later:
CRACK.
CRACK.
CRACK.
Fernleaf stood back-to-back with Flintfoot. Marblekit, along with the others, sat huddled with them inside the salt circle in the center of camp as lightning blast after lightning blast peppered the clearing. Ghosts appeared and disappeared at random, glitching unpredictably.

"Stay back!" Flintfoot screeched unnecessarily as he struggled to sound as confident as he could. He stood tall, the wind tearing through his fur, and almost anyone could have thought he was in control. Only Fernleaf could feel him trembling violently.
Mintkit let out a tremulous wail and fell, twitching and jerking to the ground. Anyone who hadn't seen her have a seizure before would have thought she was being attacked by demons.

Marblekit flinched, then instantly ran to her side. "She needs mallow!" he shouted, eyes wide. "We have to get some!"
"Don't leave the circle." said Fernleaf, voice loud and calm. Whether or not she was really scared would be anyone's best guess. "It'll be okay!" She reached out and clawed at a ghost which was trying to blow away the salt circle.
Four massive bolts of lightning struck down at the same time, electrifying the air and causing the cats' hair to stand on end. A dark figure, eyes glowing a deep red, appeared in the clearing, barely visible. One by one, the ghosts began to scream and catch fire, as if someone was burning their bones.

Flintfoot reached out to claw a ghost that had gotten too close, then jerked his paw back as it began to burn. A glimmer of relief appeared in his eyes, even if he had no idea what that meant the less ghosts the better.

Soon, all but a few of the ghosts were gone. Marblekit, after one more glance at his sister, made a mad dash for the medicine den.
"Marblekit, no!" shouted Fernleaf. "You ha...have to st-stay in the c - circ...le." But something was wrong. As more ghosts started to vanish, the shadowy figure had turned his gaze to Fernleaf. The scar from her now two-month-old injury was bleeding again. A lot.

"Marblekit, get back in the circ.." Flintfoot's voice trailed off, he glanced over his shoulder in confusion as Fernleaf stopped talking. "Fer..Fern...?" He said weakly, eyes widening as they rested on her bloodied fur. "What...lie down. Now." And he caught her by the scruff, letting her down slowly to the ground.
Mintkit was getting worse, her eyes rolled as her legs kicked out in all directions. Spittle flew from her gaping mouth and her tail lashed violently, throwing salt in every direction.

Fernleaf collapsed, legs splayed. She seemed confused, half-conscious. She was bleeding out, just like she almost had two moons ago.
With a sudden, ghostlike movement, the dark figure materialized in front of Fernleaf. He put a paw on her chest. She began to go limp.
Marblekit made a beeline for the salt circle, but was hit by something that sent him flying. He landed on the ground a few feet away and stayed there for a few seconds. But finally he staggered to his feet again, and started to drag the mallow towards the salt circle that was still barely intact.

"Leave her alone." Flintfoot snarled, clawing at the dark figure furiously.
Mintkit was no longer inside the broken circle, a small cut above her eye was bleeding where she had scraped against a rock.

Marblekit finally made it to her side and stuffed some of the crushed mallow in her mouth. "Shhhh, shhh. It's okay." he comforted her gently, running his tail over her small body. He tried to block out Flintfoot's screams...tried to block out the fact that his mother was dying a mere three feet away.
Flintfoot's claw went straight through him, rippling his form but not getting rid of him. With a hushed whisper, he closed his eyes and tightened his paw on Fernleaf's chest. She went limp. The remaining few ghosts abruptly vanished, along with the strange figure. With one more sudden crack, the storm ended and the burnt clearing returned to silence. Aside from the rustle of the breeze through the pine trees.

Tensing his back legs, Flintfoot sprang at the dark figure a moment too late; it was gone by the time his legs left the ground. He landed a bit awkwardly, then whipped around and scrambled back to Fernleaf. "Hey, wake up come one...well?" He added harshly to the medicine cats, they both turned and sprinted off. Quickstrike returned with a mouthful of cobwebs.
For a minute nothing happened. Then,Mintkit's jerks slowly subsided into twitches, and before much time had passed she was lying in a shivering heap, her thin side rising and falling rapidly but steadily. She seemed to be unconscious.

Marblekit positioned himself carefully, stretching himself over her to keep her warm.
Fernleaf was still and calm. If she wasn't so cold, and if you could pretend she was breathing, she could almost just be asleep.
With a small motion, several cats appeared in the middle of the clearing. They looked absolutely terrible. A few of them were dead. The bodies of Suriel, Mistystep, and Wrenkit lay on the ground. Tigertail stood very still, legs trembling in shock. He looked over at Amriel and Weaselstar, feeling too numb to see much except the fact that Belial, or any of the other angels, were nowhere to be found.

Flintfoot stepped away from the body of his partner, eyes as cold as hers. She was dead, there was nothing more he could do, so he forcefully shifted his attention to the chaos surrounding him.
Amriel seemed to be barely standing, her eyes were unfocused and hovered vaguely in Suriel's direction. She was bleeding from several injuries, but didn't seem to notice as the blood dripped down her.

Invisible to mortals, Kaina appeared next to Ianuarius. She seemed shaken, but not as badly as the mortals and angels. "I'm sorry." she said, glancing in Mistystep's direction.
"Can you heal yourself?" said Tigertail quietly to Amriel, staring distrustfully around at the cats.
Quickstrike stepped towards the group, addressing Weaselstar. "Hey." she said gently. "Are you hurt? Do you need help?"

Weaselstar glanced at her sharply, stiffening slightly. "Who are you?" He asked in a low voice, glancing at his dead clanmates.
Amriel looked at him slowly, but didn't answer. She almost didn't seem to have heard him.
"She was a mortal." Ianuarius answered, the tip of his tail flicked. "They die, they've been doing it as long as they've lived."

Kaina nodded her agreement, then vanished. Back to work.
"My name is Quickstrike. I'm a medicine cat." she said. "I'm here to help you."
Marblekit crept over to Fernleaf's body, eyes wide.

Falconstep was there, the untouched cobwebs beside him as he gazed at the body. He glanced up, lips pursed as he saw the kit. "Hey." He said gently.
"Too late." Weaselstar answered simply. "I'm dead."
Ianuarius turned back the the others, he remained invisible but didn't immediately leave the clearing.

Quickstrike blinked, apparently taken aback. But she recovered herself quickly. "No, you're okay." she said, tilting her head. "Your wounds are superficial. We can patch you up."
Marblekit curled his tail around his paws, not looking at her. "If I ask you something..." he began hesitantly, "will you promise to tell me the truth?"

Falconstep hesitated, but shoved away his doubts. "Of course." He answered quietly, looking at Marblekit seriously.
"No, that's not what I meant." Weaselstar shook his head, glancing again at his dead colleagues. "But I guess it doesn't matter. What do you know?"

"I know Sandstorm was Fernleaf's mate, and Marblekit's father." he said, swallowing hard. "She looks like him. Has his eyes. Sometimes I see him, remember him when I look at her. And...well...I've thought about this for a while. Put two and two together, you know? And...". He hesitated again. "I see the way Flintfoot looks at me when he thinks I'm not watching. The way he looks...looked...at Fernleaf." He looked straight into Falconstep's eyes, fear and doubt shadowing their edges. "Falconstep, who is my father? Really?"
"Not a lot." admitted Quickstrike. "But you can talk to Riverstar about that later. We need to get you patched up, come on."

"Fine, but be fast." Weaselstar agreed impatiently, sitting down. Agreeing was faster than protesting.
Falconstep blinked, caught off guard. Of course he knew the answer, he was the medicine cat, but...Marblekit was so young. Was it really his business to answer? He swallowed, shifting his weight uncomfortably and glancing down as he made his choice. He just hoped he wouldn't regret it. "Flintfoot is your father."

Marblekit nodded slowly, glancing at his half-sister then back to his mother. Then he turned and walked back to Marblekit and curled up in a ball.
Abruptly, Raziel appeared in the clearing. His wings, or what was left of them, were visible for only a moment. He blinked, staggering back a bit.
Tigertail's eyes narrowed ominously. "You."

Amriel turned, blinking. Then her eyes focused on Raziel, and a look of the purest rage took over her face. Without a word, she sprang at him, claws outstretched and teeth bared.
Mintkit didn't notice, still sound asleep. Falconstep watched him go, a pained look in his eyes as he already questioned his decision.
