"Well, now you know not to go diving into piles of grass." Smogstorm chuckled a bit, before she shook her head and moved to groom the hay from her son's fur.
Iciclepaw looked interested in Pepper's words, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly. "Strange plants? What do you mean by that? Like herbs?" He did not know all of the herbs in the clan, but he knew a few basic ones.

"There are a good bit of plants. I don't know what they are except for one that I chew on when I start to get a fever. It's a white flower called Feverfew. My mother told me a out it when I was little. She also said there are a lot more helpful plants there as well but I was taken from her before she could teach me any more of them." Pepper spoke softly and quickly, not seeming to understand why the tom seemed interested in the plant den.

Earthstar kept his grip on Ashfaith, making sure Ottermask followed behind. He could see the outline of the Twoleg building in the distance.

Pepper gave a nod before getting more comfortable, turning over onto her side and laying her head down, her eyes closing as she focused on her breathing. Her chest was tight and her bones ached but she was use to it by now, the she-cat falling into a light nap in no time at all. -- As they neared the barn where the clan was Ashfaith began to lean a bit heavier on Earthstar, his consciousness finally beginning to slip away as he coughed once more and stumbled slightly because of it. "Is Eelshock okay? Did he make it back?" He managed to get the words out but they were low and hoarse. |

Ottermask coughed from the smoke as he followed after Earthstar. Thank StarClan the leader had showed up when he did. Ottermask only hoped the rest of the patrol made it out okay.

"Earthstar! Ashfaith!" Eelshock has been watching from the door of the barn. Upon spotting the leader and his brother,Eelshock ran out to help.

"It looks like he's safe," Earthstar mewed in relief. His muscles ached as he made sure Ashfaith was okay to stand with Eelshock's help. "How is the rest of the Clan?"

"Diamondheart got mostly everyone out. We haven't seen the rest of Ottermaak's patrol, though. Are they still out there?"
"What?!" Ottermask blinked in horror at Eelshock. "I sent them all back! They should be here!"
Eelshock flattened his ears in reply.

Ashfaith smiled weakly as he heard his brother's voice call out. "Eelshock... I'm glad you made it out safely." He gratefully moved to put his weight onto his brother, a horrid cough causing his form to quake as he did so.

Earthstar flattened his ears at Eelshock's words. He didn't see any of the other members of Ottermask's patrol in the smoke. "There was no sign of them out there... did they escape before the smoke came in?" he asked Ottermask, fearing the worst.

"I told them to get out when the smoke started to get worse...Sootfeather, though..." Ottermask stifled a cough. "He fell in the river and drowned..."
Eelshock supported his brother and licked Ashfaith's ear. "Everything is going to be alright. You're alright, brother."

Earthstar sighed, staring at his paws momentarily. He had been too late to save Sootfeather, and the others were still missing. He suddenly felt more exhausted than before.

Upon hearing Eelshock, Skystorm rushed forward looking for any sign of his father. He stared at Ottermask, “Where’s Sootfeather..”

Ashfaith began to loose consciousness, his legs starting to give out as another cough cycled its way through his body. His eyes were watering from the smoke and it was obvious that the horrid stuff had made its way into his lungs. Still, he tried to stay awake and kept his ears pricked, listening for the news about the rest of the patrol.

Earthstar glanced at Skystorm sadly, then at Ashfaith. The tom was starting to worsen. "He needs to see a medicine cat now," he ordered, hoping Specklecreek and Troutpaw had made it safely.

"Come on." Eelshock tugged at his brother. "We need to get you to Specklecreek and Troutpaw." He glanced over at Earthstar and the others, knowing there wasn't anything they could do to help now.
Ottermask flattened his ears and looked sorrowfully at Skystorm. "I'm sorry, I tried to save him, but I was too late." He flashed a guilty look at Earthstar. "I sent all of them back too late..."

"It wasn't your fault." Earthstar reassured Ottermask. "None of us knew the fire had gotten so intense until it was too late." He prayed Sootfeather was safe in StarClan.

Skystorm’s head fell to look at his feet. “I understand Ottermask.” He mewed quietly before moving back to Minnowtail. He couldn’t tell her now, not in front of her kits.

Troutpaw spotted Eelshock and Ashfaith as soon as they entered the den and the tom rushed over to his mentor right away. "Specklecreek! They brought Ashfaith in out of the smoke. He looks bad."

Ottermask sighed heavily when Skystorm walked away. He looked back toward the territory, the fire consuming most of it now. His clanmates didn't make it out. He should have followed then to make sure they were making it, but he had gone after Sootfeather and that had all been in vain. "I'm sorry..."

"Earthstar! Ottermask!" Diamondheart's eyes flashed with relief as he rushed quickly towards his leader and his adoptive littermate. He breathed out. "Thank Starclan you are alright!...Ottermask…" His delight had faded quickly, the moment he saw the look on Ottermask's face. He looked at Ashfaith with concern, before looking back at him and Earthstar. Ottermask's patrol, where was...
"Oh...Ottermask, they..." He trailed off, closing his jaws with a silent grief. Four warriors, gone...it seemed that way, and it shattered the deputy's heart.
"Ottermask?" Smogstorm's head lifted quickly as she heard the deputy's exclamation from inside the barn. She quickly finished grooming her kits, before she tried to pull to her paws.

"Diamondheart, I'm glad everything went well here." Earthstar nodded to the deputy. It seemed like everyone that had gone with him made it safely. His tail dropped to the ground, knowing he would have to tell the Clan the bad news. As much as he disliked assuming the worst, he didn't think the rest of Ottermask's patrol made it.
Shellstream and Troutfang perked up at the sound of their father's voice.
Icepath was resting on a bale of hay, wanting to go out and hunt.
Winterfrost breathed a sigh of relief at the return of Earthstar and the others.
Salmonpaw and Koipaw looked around the Twoleg building in wonder, having never seen anything like it.

Ottermask couldn't get himself to look at Diamondheart or even enter the barn to see the rest of the Clan. He had taken that patrol out to help the Clan and ended up getting quite a few warriors killed.
Maskkit followed after his mother, excited that his father had returned.
Frostlake perked up hearing the voices of her mate and brother. Thank StarClan they were alright.
Eelshock went with Ashfaith over to the medicine cats.
