Wrong. Firestar merely doesn't know what a waffle is. Graystripe put those words in his mouth, and Ravenpaw, Cloudtail, and the gang took his word for it.
Firestar's disdain for waffles has been a cultural phenomenon in the Warriors fandom thanks to the 2009 animation Firestar Doesn't Like Waffles. However, Firestar not liking waffles is a large misconception thanks to a common misinterpretation of the video. In reality, Firestar does not have an opinion on waffles as he has no knowledge of their existence. By analysing the animation, it is easy to come to this conclusion, seeing how the Clan is addicted to waffles with a cult-like mentality.
In the beginning of the animation, Graystripe is happily displaying a fresh waffle while singing Waffle Time from the show Scrubs. "Waffle time, waffle time, would you like some waffles of mine?
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)" opens the animation showing Graystripe's admiration for the breakfast dish. This admiration can be seen as unhealthy, as waffles and syrup have a large sugar content. Although cats cannot taste the sweetness of sugar, the psychological effects such as hyperactivity and enjoyment can still be seen with Graystripe. Graystripe's unhealthy obsession with waffles is further seen when he seemingly converts the entire ThunderClan population to enjoy waffles. This is shown when the entire Clan gasps when "Firestar doesn't like waffles
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)". Graystripe has successfully brainwashed his Clan using his position as deputy to worship the waffle. This addiction epidemic goes farther when cats are shown to be interested in other food products, like carrots. One ThunderClan cat has presumably encountered a carrot, similar to how Graystripe may have found his waffle. They even hold a sign saying, "I FOUND A CARROT
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)". Despite this, no cat acknowledges the warrior's achievement, instead focusing on the scandal of Firestar not liking waffles. This behaviour from Graystripe and his Clan proves that Graystripe has an unhealthy addiction to waffles, and instead of consulting a medicine cat, he abused his position as deputy to create a waffle-worshipping cult behind the leader's back.
Further, Firestar is seen to be unknowing of the development, despite him being close to his Clanmates. This may be because he is repeatedly harassed by his friends about joining the waffle cult. He clearly says, "for the LAST time
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)", implying that he has been asked about waffles before. This shows Firestar's avoidance of the topic. However, he wants to make things clear to Graystripe of his stance of waffles. He says, "I don't know what a waffle is
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)". Firestar neither approves nor disapproves of waffles as a dish, instead stating that he requires more knowledge before he can make an informed decision. But while Firestar may not have an opinion on waffles, it is quite obvious that he doesn't appreciate how Graystripe has taken over the Clan for the cause. After he is harassed by not only Graystripe, but Ravenpaw, Cloudtail, and his loyal senior warriors about his stance, he says that he is "surrounded by idiots
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)". Firestar is calling his Clanmates idiots because of their blind and flawed loyalty to Graystripe and waffles. This repeated behaviour is harmful to Firestar and isolates him from his community.
The harassment of Firestar, along with the hive mind mentality of ThunderClan, is very toxic and problematic, leading to the false accusation as a result of extremism. As soon as Firestar calls out Graystripe, the deputy puts words into the leader's mouth. He claims that "Firestar doesn't like waffles!
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)" loud enough for the whole Clan to hear. This blatant misunderstanding shows that Graystripe has the toxic mindset that even having no opinion of waffles means that the cat in question actually has a negative opinion. This mindset is seen in cults, toxic fanbases, and extremist groups. ThunderClan is shown to be one due to their worshipping of Graystripe's word. When the Clan hears the statement, they take Graystripe's word as law, repeating the sentiment that "Firestar doesn't like waffles!
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)" and further spreading the misinformation. The warrior code states that a leader's word is law, however Graystripe is the Clan deputy. This means that the Clan is so far down the waffle cult pipeline that they are willing to accept the cult leader's words moreso than their actual Clan leader. What makes this worse is that it isn't the information itself that matters, but the concept of being mad at the outsider. This is shown when Cloudtail says that "Firestar doesn't like cookies!
(BloodstainBlade, 2009)" during the outcry. Not only does this show that the anger is more important, it sets the sentiment that Firestar can be made out to be even more problematic to the community than he already is, tarnishing his reputation and ruining his social life. This is a behaviour of extremist groups and is very unhealthy.
The cult-like behaviour that Graystripe instills onto ThunderClan makes it into an extremist group with harmful views on reality and previously respected cats. This makes it so that even the slightest resistance onto worshipping waffles instantly means a cat hates waffles. Firestar is a victim of this, as ThunderClan, along with the viewers of the animation, are gaslit into assuming Firestar doesn't like waffles, despite him having no opinion due to a lack of knowledge of the subject matter. These lies further isolate him from his community and make the ThunderClan waffle cult very dangerous. The problems that lie in the waffle worshipping are very real and must be addressed to prevent further harm or more extremist actions from happening in the future.
