Does anyone else not ship couples? I used to a little bit when I was a kid, but for the most part I never cared. I don’t have any specific reason for it. I feel like this is very uncommon.

I feel like I have to ask this bc it’s the internet but do you mean like real people or fictional?
I’ve always thought real ppl is super weird to do, but for fictional I tend to only deeply ship what’s 1. canon and 2. (More importantly) has something strong and meaningful connecting them.
Ex. Firestar x Sandstorm is canon, but I’ve never really felt like there was something strong holding them together. On the opposite end of things, and don’t roast me for it, I was rooting for Zutara endgame in atla bc I felt like there were a lot of enjoyable parallels, more than Kataang.
I’m also very encouraging of friendships in media because I think some ppl just go so nuts with shipping like just because characters have a single positive interaction they get shipped, and I personally feel like it devalues stories of close friendships to pigeonhole every interaction into romance.
An example I have of this if you’ve seen it is Haikyuu, like it’s a series that has absolutely nothing to do with romance, but has strong team bonds and friendships and I just never understand why there’s shipping when the strength of the story is arguably learning to depend on other people and build friendships instead of going it alone.
And none of this is to shame avid shippers of things that don’t fit into my personal criteria, I just don’t get it. I’ve got one rarepair ship I really like that’ll never be canon and it’s a good time, but I just value friendships and found families more than romance a lot of the time. I could write an essay on this but I’ll cut it here lol

It can either be something canon from the source material (like Firestar x Sandstorm) or two random characters just for fun. It’s very common, and often explored through fanfiction or whatnot.

I agree with you about the friendship thing.

I don't typically have any die hard ships from fandoms, but I do think characters are cute together. That said, I tend to obsess over my own characters over others anyways, and I do ship my OCs and I think it's fun

I shipped some when I was a teenanger and more involved with fandom, but not so much anymore.
In hindsight, I only shipped characters when they were clearly written romantically, so it was moreso about me picking up on what the writers were putting down, if that makes sense. Every past “ship” of mine either became canon, or it was revealed later by the actors/writers that they were intended to become canon.
Idk, maybe it’s the writer in me, but I never personally saw appeal in shipping together characters that weren’t written to hint at romantic connection. I want to see where the creators are going with it as opposed to reading in my own ideas. Which isn’t to say I shipped every canon couple. But it meant I only shipped canon couples.

Every time I have shipped something its been either casual or as a joke. I've never been that ride or die about it or gotten into shipping wars. Though a good portion of them were crack ships or non canon that I just saw similar themes and went "this would be cute".
I did once ship two irl people together in high school and they are literally still together to this day because of me so I guess I called it right. xD In general shipping real people is cringey and wrong but I didn't really understand that back then and early 2010 was far more chaotic with shipping in general so no one really called out irl shipping for not being ok quite yet. I literally just felt like their personalities and aesthetics were really similar so well and introduced them bc they didn't have any of the same classes or clubs but I was friends with both of them. Rare time shipping real people didn't go wrong.
Other random ships i liked/used to like: Team Rocket Jessie and James. Cause like... Idk, why not? Scratch'n'Sniff, Terezi <3 or <> Nepeta. Because Terezi doesn't deserve Vriska and Nepeta doesn't deserve Equius and the roleplayers gotta stick together. Wolf Link/Amaterasu crack ship because, idk, video game wolves? Not super invested in this one I just think the fanart that puts them together or even imagines what puppies that combine the two would look like is cute. Master Chief/Cortana, who doesn't? I'm not even that big of a Halo fan I've literally never played the games because I don't like fps but like this is good storytelling, heart wrenching, but good. Zacharie and Sugar from OFF. Also entirely fanart motivated ship. Fran/Balthier from ff12. Explaining this one would require a 20 page essay of why I am not a simp. (And be lying)

i've only ever shipped fictional couples, and then very casually. i do like analyzing the writing of character relationships, and i'll appreciate a well-written romance/character relationship that could believably lead to a romance, just not one to stress about pairing outcomes or what is/isn't canon abt a ship in fandom spaces. i was also a fanfic writer for a really long time but notably never a ship oriented fic writer, though i have occasionally read shipfic for ships i like.
