I mean, I'm on discord too but the whole point is that the more we move conversations to discord, the more the forums die (ik a lot of people only check dms on here but like... there's no reason you can't use this platform more?)
the point of these forums is so that people can interact despite time zone changes, or being away for a while, and the conversation doesn't pass them by. Discord is great for little conversations but for discussions that take actual thought and time? if you weren't there in the 15 minutes that the convo starts you're completely left out of it and that's not great for places like this thread, where the point is for everyone to have a chance to say their part. Ya know?
discord is good as a shoutbox but I haven't seen it used as a discussion platform WELL ever.

See I’m in quite a few writing discord groups so I feel like it’s actually a great place to discuss writing things, but I’m also just more active on there anyway. That said, we definitely can just keep it all here since not everyone has a discord!

Ya know? discord is good as a shoutbox but I haven't seen it used as a discussion platform WELL ever. I don't think it'd kill off the forum discussion. It'd just be a different flow of conversation. No, it would not work as well for process notes or broader discussions, hence continuing this forum thread, but for more rapid exchanges particularly while you're mid-writing it could work p well. Like I post both on here and in the general wcrp discord and what I post in both is a little different? Like there i'll occasionally drop a random anecdote or smthn whereas here most of my posts are specific and more considerate. I don't think being in either takes away from my time on the other, but also i'm kinda a lurker on both sites so I'm maybe not the best measure of how they compare.
Also while the timeline here is maybe a little longer the conversation still moves past you at times. As someone who pops in and out at random over the week there's still been discussions in this thread I've wanted to respond to but didn't because I felt like it was too late :/
idk I just think having an additional writers 'shoutbox' wouldn't hurt lol

I think a writing discord could theoretically work.
But tbh I feel like there's no reason why we can't have the same discussions here as we would in a chat space like discord? Like sure, discord might be slightly more convenient for some folks that already use it frequently. But really the only reason we don't have more chatty conversations here is because people choose not to post chatty comments. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
To be honest, it feels like nobody's really all that invested in using this thread for conversation. There's been a few times now I've tried to get some sort of conversation going, but the attempts never seem to garner more than two or three comments before it trickles off. Maybe I'm just not good at prompting discussion topics people are interested in lol. (Although to be fair, that's kind of an issue I'm having with the forums at large, not just this thread).
I guess my point is... I feel like whatever chatting we would do on a discord, this thread could actually use that kind of investment in conversation. Like, the discussions on a discord would probably look different than the kind of discussions we have here, but I think that's because we aren't really having any discussion here to begin with. We just have occasional one-post drop in rants about writing with the occasional comment response. There was a time when the sort of conversations people reserve for chatrooms like discord were the conversations you would have on forums, too.

No, that’s a fair point Honestly, I probably need to try and be more active here, since I usually just dont check the forums too often. Plus I really enjoy sharing my art, which is like, this whole process on the forums that discourages me from sharing all the many things i make for my characters, like aesthetics, art, dumb memes, etc
As far as discussions go though.
Did anyone do Camp NaNo? If so, did you hit your goals? I managed to hit 50k this month, despite being super busy, so I’m pretty proud about that.
I also wanna know a) what y’all’s main story is, and who your favorite character from that story is as well

I tried to do Camp NaNo, but ended up ditching the project I set my goals for, so didn’t precede in it.
For the second question, I don’t have an actual story currently, so I’ll base this off of my warriors OCs fic.
Main story: Three young littermates are in a prophecy about saving the clans from a “hungry tiger”. What they don’t know is that this hungry tiger is their recently appointed leader, Swampstar, who traps all PetalClan warriors in camp and forbids them from leaving. This causes them to separate (one of them is driven out, the other escapes, and the last one stays) so when they find out about the prophecy, they must learn to fulfill it, even while on separate paths.
Favorite character: As of the draft I’m working on? Probably Fogpaw(whisper). He’s one of the MCs and ends up staying in the clan and works with a resistance type group to take down Swampstar. He’s also grumpy all the time, so that gives me joy.

NaNoWriMo isn't really my thing, so I've never done it. My writing doesn't really work under deadlines and pressure lol, all it does is make me feel anxious for not achieving my goals faster. Plus it's really geared toward authors in the writing stage, I'm still in planning.
When you ask about our main story, do you mean the title or the story? Nothing for the former yet but the latter is in the works. It's a third person limited perspective, with one central protagonist and an ensemble of seven other main/supporting characters that take turns serving an additional POV. The goal is five books total in the series. It takes place in an alternate non-magical world based on mid-19th century Eastern Europe (with a touch of steampunk).
I don't have a clear plot laid out yet. But I do know I want it to heavily revolve around political intrigue and the dialogue of ethics intrinsic to it. The basic premise is the classic "evil empire" that the main characters get wrapped up in taking down. Honestly, the inspiration to tackle that particular story concept is precisely because it feels "overdone" in modern literature, but often not very well? It often feels too glamorous, trope-y, thinly veiled self-insert power fantasies overly concerned with deconstruction. But to me it has so much rich storytelling potential! I want to weave a tale that is intricately built around heavy moral concepts and philosophies, and that basic premise makes such a wonderful vehicle for those questions. Both a good adventure, and messages that the reader is left to ponder.
Some central themes I want to explore through the story: the meaning of suffering in life, what virtuous integrity looks like, and whether morality is determined by the state, collective social conscience, or an objective reality.

What seems better for the story/plot currently?? I made a character ai for my villain, but he started acting very ooc, and when I couldn't fix it, I decided to destroy the ai. I can send you screenshots if you want

uh my main project that I'm TRYING SO DESPERATELY to keep motivation for is a psychological horror/mystery........ I'm not very good at either of those genres tho so it's been very challenging to keep at it because well, it sucks but that's how you learn I suppose
and now that I'm pretty consistantly writing 50k's every month, I haven't really bothered with nano. maybe I'll try this november with 100k but I think I'd rather keep my pace. not that my 50k's have ever been a NOVEL. Only two of those 50k months have been with a single project, and the biggest one was a fanfic lmaooo

As for me, my current project is called The Nighthawks. It’s a serial fiction series published on Kindle Vella (and soon to be on Patreon), about a team of spies living in New York, called The Nighthawks. It’s their job to protect the people of Manhattan, however when a mysterious criminal organization known as Elysium shows up with a scheme to bring the world into a new age, with them at the top as gods, it’s up to The Nighthawks to stop them. There’s a lot of theoretical science, a lot of Roman/Greek mythology influence, and I consider it to be a “slow burn” mystery, because we’re always uncovering more things.
My favorite character in it though, is definitely Basil, he’s the leader of The Nighthawks and the second most main character in the series. He’s a bit grumpy at first but has a big heart. He’s known as the first autistic captain in the B.S.I (the secret organization they’re all part of), and has some strange connections to Elysium, making this mission, a lot more personal to him than most. He’s also got this really great arc of learning how to unmask and accept all parts of himself and find happiness and a bf but that’s not the point, and just over all, I really love writing for him (I love all the other Nighthawks too though, they’re all dear to me)

The plot really hasn’t started that much yet because it’s the first book, but you could check it out if you’d like. Linnk to thread: wcrpforums.com/post/3478253/thread

There's been a few times now I've tried to get some sort of conversation going, but the attempts never seem to garner more than two or three comments before it trickles off. I’m invested in this thread. That’s why I joined this thread. Because I do want those kinds of conversations. Maybe I’m just not that good at being a conversationalist? But that’s the reason I’m here and I don’t want this thread to die. I’m part of three writing threads at the moment… trust me, I want to talk about writing xD

I thought I would be able to force myself to find the time to write, but I’ve got a lot going on at the moment. All my spare time has been going to moving & buying a house & all that entails That’s so awesome that you were able to reach your goal!!
