( i guess i'll start w/ training. any other mentor/apprentice duo is welcome to join. i tend to get carried away and write too much, though! )
Embertail padded through the dense forest of pines, halting in a grassy clearing. Sunlight streamed through the branches above, warming his ginger pelt. His apprentice, Barkpaw, leaped out behind him, jittery with anticipation. "It's our first day of training!" He mewed with excitement. Cinderpaw strolled out of the bushes, trying to look nonchalant. "The skills we learn today will benefit us in the future," she meowed. Peachnose appeared beside the grey she-cat, purring in amusement. "Lighten up, Cinderpaw," she nudged her apprentice's shoulder, "When I came to training for the first time, I could barely keep my paws still!" The apprentice's whiskers twitched, but she said nothing. Embertail leaped onto a rounded boulder at the edge of the clearing. "Who can show me the hunter's crouch?" He inquired. Cinderpaw immediately dropped into a crouch, her belly fur hardly brushing the ground. She crept forward, eyes focused on a fallen leaf a few tail lengths ahead. Barkpaw copied her, though he was still shaking and his tail lashed excitedly. "Great job, Cinderpaw!" Embertail praised the she-cat, then padded toward his apprentice. "Keep your tail still," he murmured, "Try to keep yourself about a mouse-length off the ground, so you don't alert any prey." Barkpaw nodded as he adjusted his stance. "Much better," Peachnose commented, and Embertail flashed her an embarrassed glance.

Introducing, me- the slowest roleplayer in the history of roleplay.
Sunnypaw ( SOMETIME I FORGOT ) If you were to sum up Sunnypaw, you would probably come to the conclusion that her name was altogether fitting. She had a pelt the color of the afternoon sun and citrus fruit, and a tongue that spoke only bright and shining things. Yet she was also a nuisance at times, because no one liked the sun in their eyes, and this small bundle of energy was just that.
Her day had started early, before the sky had even begun to think of washing itself with color. Sheโd woken up before anyone else, thanks to having a restless head and eager muscles. No one else had been up, of course- it wasnโt even dawn yet. But she was, and she wanted someone else up with her. So sheโd reached out a white-toed paw, and ever so gentlyโฆ sheโd stabbed her partner, Stagpaw. Stagpaw, however, was the type that liked his sleep, and all within good reason. What this meant was that he was the heaviest sleeper, probably in the history of feline-kind, and hadnโt even twitched an ear at the sudden flank jab.
So sheโd left him.
With moss still clinging to the bi-color fuzz of her pelt, the she-cat had slid from the den, and (without the consent of her mentor) had dashed out of the camp as if her heels were on fire; and fire they were as as she streaked away in a blaze of vivid color.
So from that point on, you can guess the mess she made of herself.
An abandoned badger den had been thoroughly explored and excavated by yours truly, as had a hollow in one of the aspens of Lake Trembling. Sheโd ended up getting stuck in said hollow for a couple of minutes, and she could confirm that it was quite embarrassing to have one's derriere hanging from a hole in a tree. Then sheโd pounced after leaves, and insects, and chased off any lake-grown mosquito that threatened to chomp on her scrunched pink nose. Sheโd almost caught a mourning dove, but then itโd hit her in the face when sheโd sank her claws into it. To say the least, the bird won.
Birdโs seemed to be on a roll today, because even Rosepaw missed one!
With burrs and all types of clingy plant life sticking to her fur, the mess that was Sunnypaw suddenly fell out from a nearby bush as she heard the wrenโs startled cry, and her clan-mateโs frustrated curse. Why had she been in that bush? Blame the ladybugs.
With a laugh rolling from her throat, and her blue eyes sparkling with amusement, the the she-catโs voice was interrupted every now and then with small โhicโs as she spoke. โWow! That bird showed you, Rosepaw! Donโt mess with wrens!โ
And apparently she thought she was the funniest cat in the world, because after stating that, she practically fell over.

[ Tumblingpaw & Ticklepaw // Early Afternoon // Camp - -
Two apprentices of similar appearance were sitting near the edge of camp, their green eyes watching over the hustle of cats moving around. The two brown tabbies themselves were talking with each other; however, it was the smaller one who was doing most of the talking. Actually, Ticklepaw was doing all of the talking at the moment. She seems to be telling quite the story judging by the wild flailing of her paws.
"Tumbles, Tumbles! Did you see how huge that bug was that I caught earlier? Did ya?"
"Please stop calling me Tumbles... That was a kit name Ticklepaw, I'm an apprentice now."
"Oh, yeah whatever Tumbles. But did you see it?"
A sigh came from the tom. "I was there to see you catch it feather-brain."
"Can't you believe I caught that myself? It never even saw me coming!"
Tumblingpaw had to admit, he was impressed by his sister's catch earlier. She was certainly quiet and stealthy while stalking the beetle. In fact, Tumblingpaw and noticed that Ticklepaw was becoming quite the adept hunter. That's a lot coming from a loud and boisterous cat like her. You wouldn't really expect her to be so quiet and stealthy. He never mentioned to it to her though, and it was not like she would care anyways. When it came to complex things she tended to get lost rather easily. He just let her to the more simple things and let her enjoy them. "Yeah, that was pretty impressive." The apprentice replied, giving a smile. Ticklepaw giggled, and he couldn't help but give a chuckle along with her. Despite his sister being a bit scatter-brained, he loved her dearly.

Rosepaw{ early afternoon // forest // w/ sunnypaw }Rosepaw whipped aroundโ half-startled, half-guarded โears heating with embarrassment. A voice of bubbling warmth and dripping sunshine (and punctuated by hiccups) managed to reach him before he even laid eyes on the intruder.
Sunnypaw.
Had she followed him? How much had she seen? Heโd been so careful when sneaking out. He always was. Pre-dawn and careful paws made sure of that. It was one thing to have his absence discovered over the course of the day and scolded upon return to camp. It was another entirely to be silently followed on one of his outings. The young tom bristled at the mere thought. More than that, his insides simmered with prickly irritation that his failure had borne a witness.
Rosepaw didnโt make mistakes.
Rosepaw didnโt fail.
And Sunnypawโs laughter (a near-violently cheery sound) was enough to bring this simmer to rolling boil.
โIt wasnโt my fault. It probably heard you stomping around like blind badger and took off,โ he hissed through gritted fangs, claws sinking unwarranted into the soft earth. Fuming and boiling and all sorts of irked, the lilac tabby circled his fellow apprentice, his sapphire gaze leaping with fire and brimstone.
โWhat are you even doing out here?โ He questioned, taking in the variety of plants clinging to Sunnypawโs pelt. How would she ever become a warrior like this? There was no way Heavystar would let a ditzy, useless furball like her join the ranks of the warriors. She didnโt deserve it. Rosepaw comforted himself with this thought. Heโd have a warrior name in a few months and sheโd be stuck as Sunnypaw forever. He continued circling her for another beat before halting in front of the ginger-and-white she-cat. โAnd stop laughing! Youโre scaring off all the prey, maybe even all the prey in our territory.โ Defensive, embarrassed, and above all else, irritated, Rosepaw was in no mood for Sunnypaw's stupid cackling. He never was, but right now in particular he really wasn't.
Rosepaw was growing more annoyed by the second. Standing as close as he was, Rosepaw was convinced heโd catch whatever disease made the little she-cat so overwhelmingly and unbearably mousebrained. The young tom didnโt even want to consider it. Heโd come here to be alone. To train alone. And then Sunnypaw came tumbling in, oozing sunshine and a pelt matted with burrs, scaring off his prey along with all potential prey. It was unacceptable.

Sunnypaw [ early afternoon - foresty place - annoying rosepaw ] With the tom as angry as he was, one would think to back off, perhaps; to stifle their amusement, no matter how great. That would be the smart, logical thing to do, as it would probably end up saving their skinโฆ But Sunnypaw was nontraditional, and none too smart. So instead of hushing her laughter then and there, she let it bubble down until it was a languid giggle that tickled at the back of her throat.
โYeah, thatโs probably true,โ the apprentice agreed rather bluntly as she watched the lilac tom circle her, once, twice, oh, however many times. The she-cat hadnโt really been attempting to hide her presence, though; after all, that wasnโt why she was out here. But that didnโt change the matter at paw. โYou didnโt hear me coming up behind ya though, did ya?โ
With a snicker and a snort, the ginger feline let her whiskers quiver in amusement before she plopped her rump down on the pine-needle strewn ground.
Now, while she wasnโt the brightest (ironically), she could see that Rosepaw was upset. This didnโt really surprise her though, because honestly, this tom always seemed to have something to huff about-- or at least, whenever she was around him. After all, Sunnypaw did have that effect on some cats, and not that she could really blame them. She wasnโt completely oblivious, after all.
โI couldnโt sleep this morning, so I came outside to have some fun,โ she answered simply, and at this point, her laughter had indeed began to subside, so she nodded in return. โWell I doubt that all the prey is just right here, Rosepaw. There will be plenty of chances to flub later! Trust me, I nearly caught a dove this morning, but it hit me and flew away. I swear! It was so cheeky! These birds are getting rough, arenโt they?โ
With her mouth running but her eyes no longer focused on the tabby before her, the she-cat intently tracked a nearby ant as it scuttled over the ground between them. Small and black, it hardly stood out as anything special, but still, sheโd noticed it all the same, and after a moment or two, she reached out a soft white paw and blocked itโs path.
โHey, I bet I can catch more ants than you,โ the she-cat suddenly chirruped as she glanced up briefly. She then darted back down, and after corralling the tiny insect a few times, she suddenly lifted up a victorious paw, of which crawled an ant. Shoving a bright pink pad in the tomโs face, she let out a bold and triumphant โmrowโ.
โHa-ha! First ant, my win! Oh, but why are you out here? Couldnโt sleep, or just bored--? Ack! I dropped the ant.โ

Heavystar & Tawnybee You know, it was often that Heavystar questioned why he was leader. He had the muscle to pull a clan off the ground, sure, but did he have the mentality? He supposed many cats did- many cats that werenโt him. Yet here he was. Heโd been picked out of a crowd, and for what? The size of his paws? The broadness of his shoulders? The glint of his teeth? Was that all it took? No, perhaps his predecessor had deemed his mellow personality as reasonable, or wise-- charming even... Heavystar himself deemed his personality as โeasily distractedโ, which was a far cry from what might have been expected of him.
Well, no oneโs died on my watch yet, so I suppose Iโm doing something right.
Taking in a deep breath, Heavystar found that the air was thicker than clouds, and the taste was wet on his tongue. It was the taste of summer, and summer was the time of year when the air would start to boil, and the insects would get a strange itch; an itch that made them hunt for blood.
To translate: It was hot, humid, and mosquito central in summertime, and he hated it.
Heโd never been a big fan of summer, really. He could often recall times as an apprentice when he was forced to sit out due to the heat, while some of the other cats trained. It was all thanks to that dark, thick pelt of his, which was a blessing during the colder months, but more of a torture any other time of the year. Ah, but he couldnโt get caught up in his memories and idle contemplations now; he had things to do. He knew this, because his deputy was making enough noise to wake a bear.
Standing up in his soft, moss packed nest, Heavystar arched his spine, and pushed the sharp โcracksโ from his bones. He blinked his eyes and stretched his jaws, and, although his pelt was a mess, he departed from the warm, summer filled space that was his den.
โTawnybee!โ
Calling out in a mellow toned voice, the huge, dark leader slowly approached the diligent she-cat as she busied herself with her work. That was one thing he liked about Tawnybee; not only was she hard working and loyal, but she also seemed to genuinely enjoy herself while being as much.
โSorry for staying in so lateโฆ Putting together patrols?โ

Rosepaw{ early afternoon // forest // w/ sunnypaw }โFlub!?โ He snapped, stifling a growl, โI didnโt flub! It was your fault! If you hadnโt come barreling over here then I would have caught it! I would have!โ He didnโt care that she had been attacked by a dove or whatever.
Rosepaw didnโt fail.
Rosepaw didnโt make mistakes. And that was that.
And then she was talking again. Spewing nonsense. Nonstop. No filter. โCatch more antsโฆโ Rosepaw blinked, flaring at the challenge. A stupid challenge, but one nonetheless. He lurched backward as Sunnypaw shoved the ant in his face, beaming with a mix of pride and victory. As though a worthless ant were something to be proud about.
A. Tiny. Pointless. Dumb. Ant.
โIโm out here to train and to catch actual prey for the Clan. Not ants!โ Rosepaw didnโt bother with hiding the disdain coloring his words, not like it would phase her. Was there anything that could phase Sunnypaw? Something that would rile her in the same way he was riled. Or perhaps send her running off in a fit of well-deserved tears. If so, Rosepaw hadnโt discovered it.
The young tom spun around, allowing himself a fraction of a snarl, the slightest twitch of his muzzle and glimpse of stark white fangs. The prickling irritation did not fade. It stuck to his pelt. Stabbed like thorns. Clung like fever. Hot and jabbing and all-over. His claws sank into the needles again, but only for a moment before retracting once more. The day was still young, he would not let it end in failure.
The heat of the afternoon sank its weight into Rosepaw, sticky and damp. The dry rasp in his throat reminded the apprentice that he hadnโt had anything to drink since mid-morning. A quick stop by the lake should allow enough time for the prey to return from their burrows and den. After that, heโd get right back to hunting. Not fooling around, catching ants and fighting with apprentices who werenโt worth the air they breathed.
He slunk off through the trees, dappled sunlight rippling over his tabby pelt. In spite of the dense canopy-cover, the tomcat could feel the sun glaring overhead. The heat would only grow in intensity as the day worn on, he knew. Thankfully, evening would bring them relief, if not only a little.

Tawnybee & Heavystar - - Early Afternoon - - Camp
Hm.. no reply yet. Of course. Either they were sleeping like lazy-loons, or everyone was out. Just her luck. As she was about to open her mouth again, a familiar voice came from behind her. Unfortunately, she was not expecting this, and made a small jump into the air with a little 'eep!'. She hit her head on a low-hanging branch, which was apart of the roof. "Ouch! Stupid twig!" She cursed at it, pulling her head out of the den and rubbing it with a paw. Carefully she inspected her paw, making sure there wasn't any blood. She wasn't hurt, but it sure felt like a little bump was starting to form on her head! "Oh, Heavystar." Her tone sounded slightly annoyed, but she continued on calmly, "I've been meaning to speak with you, actually. Would you mind meeting with me this evening over some fresh-kill? Allow me to bring it, if you will." She winced slightly at how that sounded. What if a magpie, gossip-loving cat had heard that and misunderstood? They'd be mocked for looking like a couple! She quickly cleared her throat and added, "Strict Clan business, of course. We have some important things to discuss." Her tail whipped with a flourish to one side as she took a glance back into the Warriors' den, mumbling a bit about how some warriors are lazy.
"Have you sent any patrols out, by chance? The den seems empty, and earlier patrols should have returned by now." She would not be angry, of course. Heavystar was allowed to assign patrols himself, of course. That would explain why there seemed to be no one around. She may be able to just lead one by herself, with two or three other cats. Or assess some mentors training their apprentices. Either would be a good thing to do this time of day. Tawnybee moved her head a bit with annoyance after a mosquito buzzed by her ear. Pesky bugs... She hated this time of year with a passion. Although it brought plenty of fresh-kill for all, it also brought swarms of that annoying pest of a bug, the mosquito.
