The soft chirping of birds in the distance, punctuated by the occasional piercing cry of a hawk, gradually drew Skystar out of her dreams. The she-cat awoke slowly, blue eyes fluttering open after a moment. She took a moment to wake fully, curling into a rather tight ball buried in the soft moss of her nest. Skystar's tail was wrapped around her nose, all four feet tucked delicately beneath her body. Finally, after a moment or two, Skystar lifted her head and opened her jaws in a wide yawn, before she rolled smoothly to her feet, arching her spine in a languid stretch. She winced at an old injury, her right hip and shoulder groaning in protest at being forced to move. Long ago, in a rather violent border skirmish, Skystar's hip had been dislocated and her shoulder muscle had been strained and pulled. The High Queen took a moment to ease the tension in her joints and muscles, before she turned towards the light streaming through her den's entrance. The air in her den was comfortably warm; neither too hot, nor too cold. Just perfect. She took a moment to shake her coat out and dislodge any remaining pieces of moss from her nest before she headed towards the burrow-like entrance of her den.
Skystar blinked several times as she stepped into the open air; despite being shaded by several rather large boulders, the sunlight still easily illuminated the camp below, creating a stark contrast to the shaded lighting of her den. The she-cat's eyes pitched upwards, watching as the hawk she'd heard wheeled through the sky. It was far in the distance and hard to see, but she could make out its larger wingspan in comparison to the smaller birds that flew lower to the earth. She inhaled deeply, pulling the scents of the moors she loved so much through her nose and over her mouth. For a moment, she watched the birds in the sky, silent. It was days like these, where she and her brother, Wolfsong, used to go on hunts or patrols together as apprentices - and in the early days of their time being warriors - that she missed her brother dearly. The pain at his loss choked her slightly, but she clenched her jaw and flicked the tip of her tail in an attempt to dislodge the emotion. Wolfsong had left; he'd abandoned the Clan. He didn't care about her, or EmberClan; he was the enemy now, and as High Queen she would nee to focus on her own Clan.
Wolfsong was history now. It was time to look towards the future.
On light feet, Skystar padded towards the center of camp where a few cats were already milling about.

Scarletpaw yawned a little as she trudged out of the novices' den. She hated mornings. She hated trying to get her body to wake up and function correctly, her brain all fuzzy and muffled from the past several hours of sleep. Even though she had received a good amount of sleep, she still felt exhausted. No matter when she went to sleep, she always found herself groggy in the morning. She could never be like those cats who were fully awake and functional as soon as they awoke. It was strange to her.
She looked around the camp with drowsy eyes, seeing a few cats milling about. The mornings were always quiet. Too quiet. Scarletpaw liked action. She liked excitement. She could see Skystar coming out of her den, and she nodded respectfully in greeting to the High Queen.

Redpaw was reluctant to wake; the soft moss of his nest had cocooned him with such warmth that it was almost a crime to even consider uncurling his form from its positioning. Still, there was the sound of movement from outside the den, and after a moment Redpaw allowed his amber eyes to flicker open. Like a fox, he unfurled his form and arched his back in a long stretch. His rather fluffy tail swept back and forth as he prowled out of the novices' den, ducking his head slightly to avoid a swath of moss that hung from the entrance. The red tom-cat blinked his amber eyes a few times, jaws splitting open in a wide yawn as he finally embraced the fact that he was awake now, despite his reservations. He gave his coat a quick shake and trotted over towards a few of the other novices, inclining his head in greeting to Scarletpaw. She'd awakened before him, though that was a bit of a shock, considering that she hated mornings almost as much as Redpaw did. He sat down, sweeping his tail around to cover his front paws. It was too early for him to be hungry, but the sight of the fresh-kill was tantalizing. "I hate mornings," the tom said after a moment, his voice a low grumble. Redpaw rarely spoke, considering that he didn't necessarily enjoy the sound of his own voice, so the sudden burst of sound that accompanied Redpaw's voice was a bit startling.
Skystar's tail swept back and forth as her blue-grey eyes scanned the camp, finally falling upon a scrap of fire-colored fur that served as her novice, Scarletpaw. The younger she-cat dipped her head in greeting and Skystar returned the gesture by inclining her head and offering a flick of her tail tip. Another novice joined her an instant later, and Skystar snorted at the expression on her younger brother's face. Redpaw hated waking up early, it seemed, judging by the rather annoyed look in the young tom's amber eyes. She padded towards the pair on light feet, greeting her brother by flicking his ear with the tip of her tail. "Good morning, Scarletpaw," the High Queen mewed rather cheerfully, which only increased Redpaw's sullen expression. "I trust that you slept well? The day appears to be a good one for training."

Scarletpaw chuckled and nodded in agreement to Redpaw's comment, a little surprised at his sudden inclination to speak. It was rare that he spoke, especially in the morning. He hated mornings just like she did. The boring quiet, the lack of activity, the grogginess from sleep... It was dreadful. She looked at Redpaw, and could see the exhaustion in his face. That was the one thing she could relate to him on. The dreadfulness of mornings. He was quiet, unlike her, but they both hated the first light of day. She wished she knew him a little better. As she looked at him, she felt like she could see more to him than his usual quiet disposition. She wondered what kinds of things he liked. Did he enjoy the quiet of the morning? Or did he despise it like she did? The novice tore her eyes away from Redpaw and to her mentor and High Queen as she came over to her and her companion. "Really?" She immediately perked up at the idea of training, which she absolutely adored. "What shall we do? Fighting practice?" She could practically feel the excitement in her bones, her muscles gearing up for the training. Fighting was such a thrill to her. She loved it so much, and she couldn't wait to be a proxy!

Redpaw gave his sister a sullen look, swiping at her tail with his front paw in protest. The tom-cat snorted and lashed his tail once to let his sister know that she was annoying, and it was far too early in the morning for such jokes. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Scarletpaw gave him an odd look, as if she were trying to dissect him. He flicked his tail but said nothing, falling back into the silence that he often occupied. Before the death of his mother, he'd been a bit more talkative, but it seemed he was naturally a quiet feline. Words were secondary to his methods of nonverbal communication, and he'd been like that for a long time. After Hailstorm's death in a border skirmish, he'd seemed to cease talking all together, save for the occasional quip or sarcastic comment. He'd been close to his mother; she'd been his world, along with his sister, and her death had him very hard. He still grieved, especially since her death was relatively recent. Skystar sat down befoer the two novices, shooting a knowing look in the direction of her younger brother.
"Well, what would you like to do?" the High Queen responded, flicking the tip of her right ear instinctively as a breeze swept by, ruffling the cats' fur slightly. "There's certainly good weather for hunting, and the breeze seems to be upwind of us. It's also good whether for fighting practice; I doubt the flats are very muddy right now." As a proxy novice, Scarletpaw was being taught what it meant to be a fighter, but honing one's hunting skills was always important. "Redpaw, you're welcome to join us. You'd make a good match for Scarletpaw." The tom flicked an ear to show that he'd heard the High Queen, but he said nothing in return. Skystar shook her at her brother's silent nature. Perhaps one day the right she-cat would pull him out of the quiet aspect of his nature, but she doubted it. He was just like Wolfsong, though she kept that thought silent. The mention of their elder brother was painful for both Redpaw and Skystar.

Scarletpaw let a smile spread across her face, her paws itching to get to the training. "Yes, fighting practice sounds like a great idea! Redpaw, you should come! Skystar is right; you would be a great match!" The giddiness spread through her entire body, and she looked at Redpaw excitedly. It would be so exciting for the normally quiet tom to join her training. Maybe she could get him to open up a little and talk more! She wanted to know him better. She didn't know why she suddenly had this desire to befriend the quiet tom. She just wanted to know more about him. He seemed so interesting, beyond his quiet nature. She jumped to her paws, stretching a little, readying her body for the training. With Skystar, she was always held to a high standard, but never too much above the other novices. And as the High Queen's novice, she wanted to impress her. Scarletpaw wanted to show her that she was fully capable of being a proxy in the near future. She wanted to prove herself worthy of protecting her Clan from danger.

Skystar inclined her head and snorted a short laugh at the novice's excitement. If there was one thing you could always count on, it was the excitement of novices when it came to training; that certainly had never failed. "Very well," she purred in amusement, flicking her tail slightly. Redpaw's amber gaze slid between his sister and Scarletpaw a few times, before he sighed and flicked his tail in agreement. "It's settled then," she mewed after Redpaw's caving. "Sparring it is. Of you two go, then! To the flats! First one there gets to spar me first." Something flashed through Redpaw's eyes, and in a flash of russet fur, the tom was gone, racing out of the camp at an steady but quick lope. Redpaw was competitive, and by offering a challenge Skystar had effectively motivated the tom to fully engage in the exercise. It wasn't that he was no longer dedicated, but more along the lines of him being difficult to motivate ever since Hailstorm's death. Skystar turned glittering blue eyes to her novice, offered a wink, and then leapt forward into a run as well, taking off after her brother in the direction of the training grounds.
Redpaw moved at an easy but rapid pace, heart thudding steady in his chest. The tom-cat moved with confidence as he raced across the wide moor towards the flats, and although it was not a long run, it consisted of a few slopes and hills. He easily cleared a few fallen branches from the sparse trees, growling at the sound of paws thudding behind him. He didn't dare turn to look, instead adding a bit more speed. He was competitive; losing even a simple race would be irritating. It was as he was half-way to the flats that he realized his sister's actions, and he snorted once. She'd used that aspect of his personality against him, to motivate him and get him to commit fully to the training. Smart. Sneaky, but smart. The flats loomed in view.

Scarletpaw gasped at the challenge, and she was out of the camp before anyone could say anything to her. When faced with a challenge, she was determined to win. She would not let quiet Redpaw beat her. No way. Luckily, her long legs helped her run faster than average, and she raced over the slopes and hills, covering the ground like it was nothing. She was determined to win. She would not fail. Not for anything. Scarletpaw was not one to lose a challenge. To spar Skystar! She had to get the chance. It was perfect for training. And a race? She wouldn't let herself lose something as easy as that. She could see Redpaw's pelt come into view, and she laughed, picking up speed and running as fast as she could. She struggled to run faster, her legs screaming for her to stop and rest, but she would not budge. Not for a moment. The novice pressed on, managing to pass Redpaw by a hair. The flats started to come into view, and she laughed even louder, not slowing down for a second. She tumbled into the flats, finally letting herself breathe.
