[ so my trip went smoothly and i was able to type up a response tonight uvu ]
This cat had a lot of questions, but so did Darkfern. At least she was able to keep hers locked up for now. There was no sense in getting cozy with a so called Tribe cat that Snowstar would probably not let stay for too long. ”Our names do have meanings. I was named ‘Dark’ for my dark pelt. The ‘fern’ part was requested by my father when my mother died. Her name was Foxfern. She died when I was still an apprentice, so when my siblings and I became warriors, I was chosen to carry my mother’s name.” Darkfern hadn’t expected to open up as much as she did, but it just happened. While odd, there was something comforting about Bird. ”Wavecaller sounds like one of our warrior names, but our, ah, Wavecaller in your terms, has the suffix of ‘star’ to show that he is our leader. All four Clans have one leader - there’s SoilClan’s Snowstar, CopseClan’s Squirrelstar, PeakClan’s Sagestar, and CanopyClan’s Brightstar.” Once again Darkfern was surprised at how open she was being with this odd she-cat, but she found the information to be easy to give Bird. And why would giving this kind of information hurt any of the four Clans? She was just giving out names.
As the camp loomed closer, Darkfern shut her maw. Being out on her own was enough to cause a question here and there, but walking into camp with a stranger and telling said stranger about Clan life would certainly make her a constant source of asking questions and scathing comments. So far everything seemed peaceful in camp as it should be. That peace, however, was about to be totally shattered.
Just as she had expected, the peace was shattered as soon as she entered camp.
Darkfern huffed as her brother bounded over, his voice drenched in what could only be concerned caution. ”Can I not be outside of camp? I just needed to stretch my legs. As for who this is,” the tortoiseshell mewed with a flick of her tail in Bird’s direction, ”I found her on the territory. She says-” Darkfern never got to finish her brief explanation as Bird seemed to take over for that part. Bird would do a better job at explaining herself than Darkfern could.
It wasn’t long after the explanation when other cats began to notice that something strange was going on. Darkfern sighed, watching as Snowstar and a few other cats padded closer. Duskbite, the Clan’s deputy, padded over alongside the white leader, her amber eyes narrowed in questioning. Hickoryburn could be seen not too far off as well, his green-amber gaze flitting between Darkfern, Bird, and Snowstar. Darkfern squared herself against the stares of the Clan and looked directly into Snowstar’s eyes. Luckily she was able to keep herself from snapping at him for the whole tunnel situation. ”She was near the Flatgrounds when I found her. She’s not hostile, and she has an...intriguing reason for being here.” Darkfern looked to Bird with an expression that gave nothing away. Silently she wondered if the beautiful Tribe cat would explain to Snowstar what had happened and how she had found herself on SoilClan land, though if Bird had been able to easily explain to Batstep then explaining to Snowstar shouldn’t be a problem.

nice! this is the only reply i can do tonight, sadly, but i can still chat and then reply tomorrow. ))
Oh. Bird in Shallow Waters couldn't help but feel sorrow for the cat beside her- the knowledge that she had lost a mother was, in some ways, as horrible as remembering the storm. Their names were never related to their parent's unless it was decided so at birth, compared to Darkfern and her fellow cats- her mother had been Wind that Chills Clouds, and her father was Fish in Swift Waters. She only had a passing resemblance to her father's name- but it was a source of pride that had carried her for a long time in her life.
At Snowstar's questioning, Bird frowned and turned to him. "My Tribe- the equivalent to your Clan- was wiped out in a huge storm. I have been traveling ever since, looking for other cats. You are the first group I have seen in over a moon." She stood as tall as she could while the big cat walked around them, trying not to flinch when Snowstar leaned in closer.
"How do I know that you are not a spy from, say, CanopyClan?" His voice was little more than a growl, dangerous while he prowled around them. The air seemed to drop down to a chilly temperature, where Bird shivered and flexed her paws.
"If you want, I can lead you to my dead Tribe," she meowed sharply, making Snowstar blink approvingly with now-curious eyes. It was almost as if he was looking for a spark of fierceness, because she knew that she did not smell like she belonged to this valley. She still smelled of the salty sea, even if it was fainter now, and Bird still had the ever-present accent, the lilt that rose and fell with each word.
"....Hm." He paused after a moment, sitting down in front of them. From the way some of the other cats relaxed, Bird assumed that she was out of danger. "Bird in Shallow Waters, what is your power?"
.....What? Power? What is he talking about? "I'm afraid that I don't know what you mean." Bird blinked, unsure of what he meant. What kind of thing did he mean by a power? The power behind claws during a battle strike or when one pounced on prey?
"I can raise or lower the temperature of the air at will," he rumbled, tail lashing. Ah. "What do you have?"
Bird pondered the question for a long moment before smiling- she stood up and dipped her head to this Clan's Wavecaller in front of her. "When I was a kit, the heron gifted me with enhanced senses and some amount of speed. I can hear, see, and smell extremely well, much better than even my Tribemates with their own sight or smell enhancements. The speed is only a small boost, but I can outrun a normal cat without speed boosts."
Snowstar slowly paused, as if considering it. "That is...interesting." He turned to the cat beside him, the one that had approached while he had talked- Bird did not know their name, but she was curious as to why he turned to them. "Duskbite, what is your opinion on this newcomer? Should she be allowed in? We cannot allow Bird in Shallow Waters to leave, after all, not with already having seen our camp."

[ i fell asleep right after replying last night x3 ]
Thinking about Foxfern stirred something deep within Darkfern’s heart, but she ignored it as best as she could. This wasn’t the time to mourn for the brown patched tabby. Especially not now with Snowstar and Duskbite padding over for questions. The rest of the Clan was beginning to gather as well, Darkfern easily spotting cats like her father, her sister, Elmheart, and Hickoryburn.
Hearing Snowstar question Bird made Darkfern think about how well of a leader the white tom was - except for his ideals about the tunnels. Just because of that one opinion made Darkfern seem him as the worst leader in SoilClan history. She would have admired the tomcat and his leadership abilities had he not carried that one particular opinion.
In silence did she listen to the leader and foreign exchange questions and answers; Darkfern had no part in this, at least for now. She tilted her ears in Duskbite’s direction when the leader called for her opinion. The large she-cat sniffed, brilliant amber eyes searching over Bird as if looking for any sort of flaw big or small. After a minute of silence she finally spoke up in that deep voice of hers. ”I say we keep her,” Duskbite mewed in a voice that showed disdain toward the newcomer, ”for now, at least. She seems innocent enough, but one wrong move…” Duskbite didn’t finish her statement, instead she merely unsheathed her unusually long claws to silently indicate what she intended. ”Should she prove trustworthy and hardworking, we can train her in our ways. No sense in keeping her if she’s not useful.”
Duskbite had a point. Now that Bird had seen the SoilClan camp she would be a possible danger should she want to turn on the Clan. If she stayed there was no sense in keeping a cat that couldn’t take part in Clan duties, at least no sense in letting a cat do that who wasn’t elder age. While more thoughts tumbled through the tortoiseshell’s mind, the familiar shape of Nightstream padded over to stand before Snowstar and Duskbite. Nightstream dipped her head. ”Before we do anything with Bird in Shallow Waters please let me tend to her. Dear,” she turned to Bird with wide amber eyes, ”you’ve been travelling for so long, and you’re smaller than a twig! You need some food and rest.” Nightstream turned back to look at Snowstar. ”You’ll let me tend to her, right? Even you can tell that she needs a medicine cat’s attention.” Even though she was speaking about helping Bird, there was something in Nightstream’s voice that made Darkfern’s stomach churn with disgust and anger. There was admiration in the medicine cat’s voice as she spoke to Snowstar. There was even something a bit more than just admiration in the depths of her amber eyes as well. Get it together, Nightstream! Snowstar doesn’t deserve your admiration, and you’re a medicine cat for StarClan’s sake, stop mooning over him! At least Darkfern’s sister did have a point - Bird needed some medicine cat attention.

(( that happens to me all the time! or i'll be texting someone and fall asleep before they respond. ))
Bird in Shallow Waters startled as cats started to come closer, looking around while they curiously watched. When Duskbite spoke she spun towards the dark she-cat, eyes wide at the declaration. "I mean- I was going to ask to stay, I'm fine, you look really dangerous so I wouldn't dare cross any of you," she babbled, fumbling for words as her paws moved back and forth. Her nervous almost-pacing stopped when Snowstar let out a rumbling purr of laughter, a grin breaking out.
"I assure you, I don't doubt that," he reassured her, making the Tribe cat relax silently, "but I will assign a warrior or two to keep a watch on you and teach you about our clan. I will just want you to talk with me and some others so that I can find out more about where you came from."
Seeing another cat walk up to them, Bird gave a long blink when she started to talk about healing and worrying about her. "Um- I'm perfectly fine, thank you?" She backed away and nearly ran into Darkfern, quickly shaking her head. "This is just. How I usually am. I was a uh, messenger and hunter in my tribe, and I've always been this small, and-"
"And you will be treated by our medicine cat, Nightstream," Snowstar hummed with a watchful eye, making her look away. "At least a checkup."
Bird dipped her head, the motion of respect to the leader just as sincere as when she had done the same with her Wavecaller. "...Fine." Her face slowly grew confused after that. "Wait. You are not the healer?" When he shook his head she just groaned and resigned herself to a world of new terms and positions and backed down.
"We will talk later," he assured her. "Now. Nightstream, bring Bird in Shallow Waters to the medicine cat den with Ripplepaw." There was something more in how he looked at Nightstream, something that made her frown, but she said nothing on the matter.
Thrown into this new reality, she blankly nodded and followed the not-Wavecaller-healer to a nearby tunnel, undoubtedly one that would open up into a smaller cave, followed by what seemed to be a to-be. A healer to-be? The young one was chattering on about herbs and to her trainer as they left the curious crowd.

[ same xD ]
A satisfied grin danced across the face of Duskbite. Her thick tail flicked back and forth in amusement at Bird's reaction to her words and actions from earlier. "We're the most dangerous of them all, newcomer. No cat with a working brain would dare cross one of our warriors, especially me." As if to prove her point Duskbite pressed her claws into the soil underneath her paws. She snickered faintly to herself, amusement still rippling through her. If there was one thing the Clan deputy loved doing the most it was intimidating other cats with her unusually long claws and her large build. She was something Darkfern would admire if she didn't think how Snowstar did.
As soon as Darkfern had the chance to speak up, she did. Looking at Snowstar with narrowed eyes, she mewed, "I will watch over her. I found her, after all." While she felt like it was just right for her to watch after Bird and take her on as some kind of apprentice, Darkfern also knew that her wanting to watch after Bird was because of how intriguing she was, how pretty she was. There was just something about the Tribe cat that made Darkfern want to learn as much as she could about her. Saying no more she remained silent to wait for her leader's response.
Her silence didn't remain long. She leaned forward and nudged Bird reassuringly when the Tribe cat nearly ran into her. "It's alright. It's just Nightstream, one of my littermates. She won't hurt you." For once Darkfern was actually being genuinely nice to a cat she didn't even really know all that much about. Typically the tortoiseshell was secretive and wary around cats she didn't quite know or trust yet, but it seemed like she was already opening up to Bird.
A soft mrrrow of amusement came from Nightstream. She curled her tail high into the air and padded over closer to Bird, looking her over with a soft gaze. "You may have been born with this build and you may feel fine, but how often is a cat completely fine after a long travel?" And after having their entire family and Tribe wiped out, Darkfern silently added to her sister's comment. "Like Snowstar said, I'll just look you over. Ripplepaw and I will," she added with a purr. Ripplepaw's training was coming along fine, and helping a cat that wasn't injured in any obvious way would be a great lesson to give Ripplepaw.
Nightstream nodded when Snowstar told her to bring Bird to her den. The tortoiseshell couldn't help but look at the white tom for a moment longer, that more than admiration look gleaming in her eyes once more. It made Darkfern sick to see her sister so wrapped up with Snowstar. Can't you see he's tearing SoilClan apart? "Come on, Bird in Shallow Waters, we'll look you over. It won't hurt and won't take long at all." Pulling her gaze away from the leader, Nightstream gestured for Bird to follow her to her den. The compactly built she-cat smiled as she was joined by Ripplepaw, glad that her apprentice was so eager to help out and learn.
Once Nightstream had slipped into the medicine cat's tunnel, Darkfern couldn't help but slowly pad toward the tunnel, curious about how Bird would react to Nightstream and Ripplepaw, and she was just overall curious about Bird herself.

Snowstar narrowed his eyes at Darkfern, looking her over before cautiously nodding. "You may watch over her, but I will assign another cat to check in on the Tribe cat often." With that and a swish of his tail, the tom walked off, softly talking with Duskbite. Most of the other cats dispersed, with a few looking at Bird and where she left, some going off to hunt or to check the dens and tunnels.
Bird was disgruntled by the two she-cats, looking back and forth as they went to wherever their healer would check up on her. "I really don't need anything..." Drowned out by Ripplepaw's chatter, she frowned while walking with them, glancing back to check if Darkfern was there. She was the only constant, really- beautiful, friendly enough, and willing to talk. That was worth more than anything to Bird at that moment.
"What're we checking her for, Nightstream?" Ripplepaw's eyes were wide as she walked along in the wide tunnel to the cave, opening up into a dim space with herbs sorted on one end and nests filling the area. "Fatigue? Sickness? She doesn't look hurt, so I don't know what it would be."
"I'm not hurt," Bird grumbled once more, tail lashing in discontent as she sat down. "What do I need to do to prove that I'm perfectly fine? Run around for amusement?"

Darkfern noticed how Snowstar's eyes were narrowed as he looked at her. The tortoiseshell narrowed her eyes right back. "Very well," she responded curtly, voice guarded for the most part. At least he understood that they were not to ever be on good terms. Soon enough the Clan will be rid of you. Once she had more of a following then she would directly attack Snowstar herself. Perhaps Bird finding the Clan at this time would help Darkfern out in the long run. There would be confusion about what to really do with the Tribe cat, and Darkfern could use that as her advantage.
Following after Nightstream and Ripplepaw, Darkfern kept her eyes on Bird for a while. She even had an odd way of walking, her paws stepping softly over the ground. SoilClan cats walked with solid confidence knowing that something hard was going to be under paw; the way Bird walked made it seem like she was used to something soft under her paws. Her observations were cut short when Nightstream piped up after Ripplepaw had said something.
"I'm sorry, Bird in Shallow Waters, but I really do want to check you over. You may feel fine now, but I want to make sure that doesn't change. Will you allow me to check you?" The tortoiseshell slipped over to stand right beside Bird, her head cocked in question. Nightstream was being polite, but Darkfern couldn't stop herself from speaking up.
"If Bird in Shallow Waters thinks she's fine, maybe you should listen to her. Cats being pressured into seeing the medicine cat typically don't come back even when they need it." Darkfern wasn't trying to be rude to her sister, but Nightstream had to see reason.
Nightstream sighed as she turned to look at her littermate. "I understand, Darkfern, but please let me do my job. I just want to look her over."
Darkfern huffed. She supposed she could allow Nightstream a quick check of Bird if the Tribe cat allowed it. "Fine, but when you're done, she leaves." Darkfern gestured toward Bird with a curt nod. While the tunneler loved her sister, she knew Nightstream could be a little overbearing. She tried treating a lot of cats like kits when they were full grown adults. And a part of Darkfern didn't want Nightstream to somehow rub off her absolute adoration of Snowstar on Bird.

(( and then i promptly died. i'm back for good now, though. i can relax. ))
Overall, these Clan cats were shoving her out of her comfort zone.
They were all so, so foreign. They moved like the great big furred predators at the edge of her tribe's hunting zone, slow and heavy. They looked like they could never step lightly, but perhaps it was the terrain here that allowed them to step heavier- it was more solid than the bare ground, grasses and the sand, their trees holding the ground compactly and these caves of cold, hard stone like the cliffs that Bird had grown up in and nearly died in escaping.
Their voices were flat, still, as steady as the rock they lived on. It wasn't that they didn't change with emotion or sound- she heard that in both this cave and the one they had come from, hearing everything to the tiniest whisper- but that it was strong, constant pressure. No matter the cat here, Bird in Shallow Waters would always come across as being more soft-spoken.
Even the territory threw her off- obstacles other than burrows or holes or the sand? Sharp corners and trees and suddenly the realization that anything other than a bird could live off of the ground or the sea?
She was meant to run, to sprint, and this severely harmed her ability. She was one of the few messengers that her Tribe used- meant to hunt and deliver words and dash for as fast, as long as she could. With the new area came new challenges, and she would learn every bit of information the woods had to offer. How could she move through the forest quietly but with the speed of a seabird? Could she go through the tops of the trees, with what looked like long-tailed furry mice?
Bird shook her head silently, dispelling the thoughts before paying attention to the three others in the den besides her. "Just be quick about it," she said curtly, stiff and just wanting to get it over with. Being in any position that she needed help with Wavecaller's herbs and healing expertise was something she loathed- and this, with a stranger, even moreso. It was....strange, perhaps, that the comfort from knowing that this was Darkfern's sister was there. Darkfern was nearly as much of a stranger.
"So, Nightstream, what do we do?" Ripplepaw looked excited to learn, wanting to bounce up and down with excitement. "Is there anything that needs to be done immediately?"

[ yeeee<33 back from the dead is good ;D ]
Nightstream knew nothing about this she-cat. Darkfern didn't either, but she felt like she knew more than her sister did. It was obvious that Bird was uncomfortable in the medicine cat's den, but she couldn't just leave, not when Nightstream and Snowstar both would see to it that Bird was fully evaluated by trained eyes. Darkfern could certainly sympathize with the Tribe cat. Receiving medical attention, especially when it wasn't needed, was a true pain in the tail.
A small purr came from Nightstream. "I'll be as quick as a rabbit," she replied with a warm smile covering her muzzle. She turned to Ripplepaw with that smile still on her visage. "There is no obvious wounds or ailments. She looks quite healthy, but injuries and diseases can hide for a long time. There have been plenty of cats who didn't know they were carrying greencough until it was too late." Gesturing with her tail for Ripplepaw to follow her actions, Nightstream began to slowly pad around Bird, sniffing her and looking her over with an observant eye. "Look for anything that looks out of place. Any patches of red skin should be noted. If you smell something sour, that should be noted." After a few more moments Nightstream backed away. She neither saw nor smelled anything out of place about Bird. With that knowledge she glanced to her apprentice. "Ripplepaw, I want you to tell me if Bird in Shallow Waters has any injuries or sickness that needs to be treated." With saying that the tortoiseshell medicine cat sat down and curled her tail neatly around her paws, attention all on Ripplepaw.
Darkfern huffed. Nightstream was being speedy about this, but even Darkfern was growing tired of it. Bird was fine; the Tribe cat had even said so herself. Sure, it was important to know for sure and have an expert check the newcomer out, but even Darkfern, a tunneler, could tell that Bird was completely healthy. The long-legged tortoiseshell huffed once more, laying down and slitting her eyes as she observed the happening before her.

(yeah. also, doesn't it bother you that there aren't many good roleplays here? i would join group rps, but either i lose interest because of how many people there are or become pressured just because of a time where my muse is gone. either way, many of the clans and otrps right now are lackluster.)
Bird was, by far, not a patient cat. From the moment she had opened her eyes she was full speed ahead, dashing after what she felt was her spirit creature. When it developed into speed and senses, it had widened her world even more- but she had been taught how to calm down, how to appear graceful and serene in her body language while she itched to sprint and run until she had no more energy left. She did pace, however, often in the Tribe open area when she wasn't out doing her job. Pacing could relieve the ever-rapid current of energy under her itching fur.
Standing here and letting a to-be sniff her and look at her like a mouse or a fish that had been caught did not help at all.
"....It doesn't seem like she has anything I can see or smell," Ripplepaw said hesitantly, eyes flickering up at Nightstream before she walked around the standing Tribe cat again. "It is nearing the end of the day, and she seems a bit tired but not hungry. I don't think it's due to anything but traveling for most of the day and catching something near our territory, though. I think she's fine?" The last part had a questioning tilt to it, making Bird smile just a bit at the telltale sign of a to-be hoping so much to be correct.
She glanced over at Darkfern quietly. She looked a bit annoyed at the proceedings, just as she was- but Bird had hidden her attitude just a bit, smiling softly at the to-be. She looked almost old enough to become a hunter or protector, but she wasn't sure how it worked with these healers. Would there be two official healers? Would she get promoted at the death of Nightstream? Either way, she seemed to be the only one of the to-bes nearing an age at which they'd be promoted.
"Is this correct?" Her voice was measured but like the tides while she watched Nightstream with less intensity than Ripplepaw, tail swishing from side to side near-silently but for the whisper of air Bird could hear and none of the others could.

[ yeah, it kinda does. i'll find some really good small group role-plays or 1x1's from time to time, but they never seem to last long or they get boring and all ;w; ]
With her observations over, Nightstream was just allowing Ripplepaw to finish her own. She listened to her apprentice intently, nodding every so often as she continued to speak. The young she-cat was learning fast and would soon see the day where she would stand before StarClan once more and receive her full medicine cat name. She had been a fast learner, and with her innate ability to find medical herbs in the territory, she had been a joy for Nightstream to mentor. And while Nightstream still had many more seasons left in her, she was glad to know that her apprentice would soon share the full-fledged medicine cat title beside her.
The tortoiseshell healer gave one last final nod. She flicked her tail, a prideful purr rippling against her chest. "Excellent job. Bird in Shallow Waters is in perfect shape."
The tunneler had to admit, Ripplepaw was learning fast. Wasn't it just yesterday when the young she-cat been born? Eh, Darkfern didn't keep up with that. She wasn't all that into kits and their growth. Before her sister could say anymore, Darkfern got back to her paws. "We'll take our leave then." She turned to look at Bird and nodded, silently understanding just how badly the beautiful Tribe cat wanted to leave.
Nightstream twitched her tail-tip as she looked at Darkfern. "Very well. Our visitor is healthy and has the right to leave now." She dipped her head to Bird, smiling softly. "Thank you for letting Ripplepaw and I look you over." The medicine cat then turned back to look at her littermate. "Perhaps you should let Snowstar know that we've finished checking her over. He'll probably want to know."
Darkfern grunted, eyes narrowing ever so slightly. "Why don't you tell him?" You're always stuck at his side anyway, and I don't want to do anything with that sparrow-brain if I can help it.
"As much as I would love to tell Snowstar," Nightstream paused and shook her head, but not before Darkfern had caught an affectionate glint in the medicine cat's eyes, "Ripplepaw and I need to clean up the herbs a bit before we take to our nests. Elmheart was in here earlier due to a thorn and we haven't had the chance to organize yet."
"...Fine," Darkfern muttered. She gestured for Bird to follow along with her as she began to pad out with a silent farewell to her sister. "Sorry about her," the tunneler whispered once she was out of earshot of Nightstream and Ripplepaw. "Things in the Clan aren't all that...peaceful right now..."

even since the old wcf, i faded from rps with shame. i always tended to avoid people from those rps because i would always think they'd hate me. even now, i still do that. ))
Bird in Shallow Waters dipped her head to Nightstream, letting her faint smile show again. "Have a nice night." Under her breath, not heard by Ripplepaw or Nightstream, she murmured "May your Tribe of Calm Waters watch over your dreams," padding out as she whispered it.
Her Tribe had been deeply connected to their ancestors, their Tribe of Calm Waters, even if Wavecaller had more of a communication with them. Their ancestors appeared as their spirit animals, as their guiding force, and Bird's mother had always taught her the importance of her ancestors- they watched over their sleep, guided them in dire times, and gifted them with senses to survive.
What good the blessing they gave us was, she thought before instantly stopping the thought. Her ancestors were not to blame. It was the storm. It was their gifts that let her live, the speed and stamina to escape heightening in a time of need. She had thought she could see more than her heron since then. They were all flashes, though- nothing like an extension of herself but the heron she could feel.
Turning to Darkfern, she tilted her head curiously, blinking. Darkfern looked awkward, but utterly serious. "What are you all going through? I could tell that your leader was tense, and some of the other cats were, too. I could also hear something about tunnelers while Nightstream was checking me over with her to-be." They were still in the tunnel, stopped by the conversation. Bird's eyes were intelligently staring into Darkfern's, almost as if the stranger could give her what she wanted just through watching. "I could almost smell something like conflict here."

[ ahhh, i feel ya. i'm sure they don't hate you, but i certainly feel the same way when i fade from role-plays ;w; ]
Why was she telling all of this to some newcomer? Bird wasn't even close to Darkfern, but there was something about this Tribe cat that had caught the tortoiseshell's attention from the beginning. She seemed smart and sharp-witted, a well-equipped cat with very useful powers. Darkfern remembered what Bird had responded with when Snowstar has asked her what her powers were. They sounded like something a CanopyClan cat would have as a power, or perhaps a PeakClan cat. Bird could very well be useful to Darkfern in the coming moons...if the Tribe cat stayed, that is. Snowstar wouldn't want Bird to leave now that she knew what the SoilClan camp looked like, but nothing would stop Bird from leaving if she so wanted to. But those thoughts needed to be put aside. Bird had spoken and she needed a response.
The black and ginger she-cat flicked her tail, cautiously taking in her surroundings. The activity in camp was dying down. Most cats were retiring to their dens for a well deserved sleep while a select few were going on the night patrol. Hickoryburn was in the lead, his muscular form slipping out of camp with an authoritative power that would have some cats assuming he was a Clan leader. Seeing that the camp was practically deserted, Darkfern was comfortable enough to confide in Bird.
Darkfern stopped and looked at the pale-furred Tribe cat. "SoilClan has a long history of cats known as tunnelers. We're exactly what it sounds like - we tunnel below ground in search of food. We even have secret tunnels to escape if another Clan attacks or if we're planning an ambush. Tunneling has been a part of our custom for as long as the Clan can remember, but Snowstar wants to change that. The tunnels have been unstable as of late, and no cat knows why. In the past season we've lost three of our finest tunnelers." Darkfern had to stop for a moment, a painful memory of her mother, Foxfern, flashing in her mind. She had been crushed and broken as a patrol brought her lifeless body back to camp. She had been crushed under a cave-in, broken beyond repair... The tunneler shook away the memories like cobwebs. "I'm a tunneler, so is my father Houndshadow. Tunneling is a dangerous job, but being a Clan cat is dangerous in itself. Tunneling is a part of who we are as SoilClan, and I can't let Snowstar take that away from us. Some agree with me, but others, well, they see Snowstar's opinion as the only way to go. I think they're wrong, and I'd do anything to keep tunneling part of SoilClan." As she finished her little spill Darkfern had unconsciously unsheathed her claws and was digging them into the ground under paw. It was obvious she was passionate about keeping the tunnels active. She didn't want anything to happen to that aspect of SoilClan life - it was a part of who they were. It was what kept them apart from CopseClan. It was what made them SoilClan.

(( yeah. it's why i like the way this forums works- you can have various different accounts, even if they have the same base. i was on the old wcf since 2010, and it's come a long way from that forums to their various updating to it closing down and this starting. it was much harder to make other accounts back then. had to mail info in and everything for a while, lol ))
Bird's eyes widened as she took in her words, quietly processing the information while watching how Darkfern moved. She looked pained- someone she cared about died, perhaps?- and was quite passionate about her cause. The light-furred she-cat had always been a believer in causes that others would give their lives for, and this was no different. Her mouth opened, her eyes shined and tail swished before she spoke.
"How do I help?"
She had been quite uncomfortable around their leader, Snowstar, anyways. He gave her the creeps. Too intense, too curious about her tribe, too curious about her abilities. She would use them for whoever she wanted to, thank-you-very-much. Something about him made her senses crawl as well. Something almost dark about him. Bird resigned to keep a careful eye on him and not give him much at all as she turned to Darkfern.
"Something seems wrong about this Tr- Clan, besides your tunneling cause. Almost like something bigger is going on." She looked around, making sure nobody could hear them. "Your leader, Snowstar? Something's off about him, but I didn't notice it before. That other one he was talking to, too. Dusk-something? Your names are too mixed to remember. I remember yours, though, Darkfern- don't worry." She cracked a grin. "And where do I sleep?"

[ oh yeah, omg. i was on the old forums the day they opened and i can tell you, a lot has changed from then to now ]
She had just told everything to Bird. She hadn't went too deep into detail - she went deep enough as far as she was concerned - but she had just spilled her ideas and thoughts to a cat she didn't know anything about. Or, well, she only knew a little about. She hadn't even told everything to her father, just that she didn't agree with Snowstar's decision to try and rid the Clan of tunnelers. Houndshadow had agreed that tunneling was dangerous, but he didn't think it should be completely taken away from the Clan's traditions. He had lost his mate, the mother of his kits, to the tunnels, but he knew that the Clan couldn't just push away their defining feature. Darkfern was glad that her father could see reason and could tell that something needed to be done with Snowstar. Houndshadow would think that the leader just needed a conversation with some of his senior warriors, but Darkfern knew that Snowstar would need more than that if he were to see reason. Snowstar wouldn't see reason. Darkfern knew that. He needed to see something else, and Darkfern was willing to do anything to get Snowstar to see something that would change his mind.
Darkfern hadn't expected Bird to be so gung-ho about this. She hadn't even expected the Tribe cat to want to be a part of it. She blinked her amber eyes, looking Bird over for a long time before finally speaking up. "You want to help? You're not even part of the Clan. You have no reason to side with any cat here." Darkfern flicked her tail around the camp. If Bird was sure about this, and Darkfern felt like she was, how could she help? How could a beautiful Tribe cat help out a Clan cat that wanted to overthrow her current leader and deputy...?
Finally, she took in a deep breath and looked Bird right in the eyes. "Stay by my side. If you truly want to help me with my cause, then I want you to stick with me. Promise to be loyal to my cause," Darkfern mewed, her voice hushed as she kept her gaze on Bird's. She knew the Tribe cat was right - something was off about Snowstar, more than just him wanting to rid the Clan of tunnelers. "Duskbite. She's the Clan's deputy, next in line to be leader. Snowstar and her are close, so of course they've rubbed off on one another. Duskbite is just as bad as Snowstar."
Caught off guard, Darkfern paused. Why was she caught off guard? Something about how Bird remembering her name made a little fluttering go off in her chest. She took in a deep breath and tried to calm herself. She didn't speak until she knew she could steady her voice. "You can sleep in the nest beside mine. Batstep, my other littermate, sleeps on my other side, so take the empty nest." With that the mottled she-cat motioned for Bird to follow as she padded to her nest, slipping into a large den shrouded in nighttime shadow.

(( oh, gosh, the old forums. i was back doing one line rp posts in sonic rps. when i think about it i just have to laugh. and when you wanted to reply, a whole new window opened and everyone hoarded subs like a secret. the old forums was great, to be honest? it's great now, but i have so many memories from the old forums. ))
Bird in Shallow Waters laughed softly, smiling at the dark she-cat's confusion. "It's not as if I have anything to lose," she explained quietly, ears twitching every which way as she caught all of the sounds. "I have no one else from my Tribe left, and tradition should always be kept, no matter how dangerous. My mother's father was a messenger, just like me, one that my Tribe had few of." She paused, sitting down and smiling just a bit. "Being a messenger is dangerous. You have to have gifts that can help you, since you had to had so much speed and stamina to run messages back and forth and patrol the coastal plains when patrols were sparse. Our Tribe lands were extremely large, you see," she murmured.
She chuckled and looked over at Darkfern, her smile tired and worn out. "Running, day and night. It made us the fastest cats in the land, but it takes a toll. Not enough sleep and rest, tiring us out after working for as long as we could without passing out." Bird stopped for a long moment before looking down. "My mother's father died from his work, but messengers are needed to ensure the safety of our Tribe."
"Our Tribe almost only has sensory gifts. The ones marked with speed and stamina become messengers, the ones marked by the Tribe of Calm Waters and by fate-telling become Wavecaller." She looked out at the entrance to the cave, out at the stars that could barely be seen above the trees. "After my mother's father died, we nearly ended the messengers, but my mother said that we needed them. I'm proud to be a messenger, despite the dangers." She smiled brightly at Darkfern and dipped her head. "That's why I'll help you," she said, chuckling. "I guess we're similar souls, even if my Tribe never had a civil war."
She touched her nose to Darkfern's shoulder, speaking softly as another cat passed them. "I will stay loyal. And those two seem to be the only ones that feel that way- but you should keep on the lookout."
Soon after, Bird was following Darkfern on silent steps to the den, tip-toeing around nests as if she would break the quiet mood while the Clan cat walked surely to her nest. Curling up next to the she-cat, she fell into a restless slumber, pressed against Darkfern while nightmares silently overtook her dreams.

[ oh dang, yeah. i remember when i was doing one-liners and hideous replies. i didn't know about subs for a long time omg. but yeah, i've got so many good memories from there ]
It was surprising to say the least that Bird was so ready to protect the tunneling way of life. But as she went on to explain herself, Darkfern found herself understanding Bird more and more. She still didn't know much about the beautiful female, but she found herself wanting to know more. Listening to Bird in Shallow Waters talk had Darkfern forgetting all about reporting to Snowstar about Bird's check-up. No matter, Nightstream would probably find herself with Snowstar by morning. Darkfern loved her sister, she really did, but Nightstream was on Snowstar's side. If it weren't for her little crush on the leader then perhaps the medicine cat would see that tradition was more important, but now wasn't the time to think about all of that. That thought was for another time.
So Bird was a messenger? That sounded...intriguing. Darkfern wanted to learn as much about Bird and her Tribe as possible now that her interest was piqued, but they both needed sleep. Perhaps tomorrow would see them exchanging more details about their lives. It was odd how the tortoiseshell she-cat, usually the type to keep to herself, was opening up so fast to this newcomer. "That sounds like a very dangerous job, much like tunneling, but they're both important." Even if Darkfern had never been immersed in Tribe culture, she could tell just how important messengers were. "Were there other Tribes? Did...something happen to them as well?" Did messengers run back and forth from Tribe to Tribe? And if there were other Tribes and nothing happened to them, why hadn't Bird sought them out?
Powers were nothing new to Darkfern. Each Clan had their own set of powers. Each cat had their own specific power. Powers never determined the rank of a cat like they seemed to do in Bird's Tribe, but sometimes a power did influence what a cat would do in their life. "I'm curious about your Tribe's powers," Darkfern murmured honestly. She was so curious, but her curiosity needed to wait until tomorrow at least.
Listening to Bird some more, Darkfern found herself nodding. They were similar souls. Both of their ways of life had been, or was, challenged. She felt connected to the Tribe cat. Her fur crackled with an electric warmth when the Tribe cat pressed her nose against her shoulder. "Thank you, Bird in Shallow Waters. I'm sure things will soon change and more cats will go to Snowstar's side, but many will be on my side, and together, we'll keep the tunneling way of life." Darkfern's words were as true as they could be. It was odd to acknowledge it, but Darkfern felt totally comfortable with Bird and she felt lucky to have such a cat on her side.
Without another word, Darkfern slipped silently into her nest and lay down, curling up beside her brother and her newfound friend. Before long the tortoiseshell was drifted off into sleep.

(( yeah, it was a fun time. and subs made me so amazed- and also the art forums! there are comics that nobody else remembers now, but they were really big deals. ebonycloud's series of fantastic gns, someone with deer in their name giving other comics.... all of it sort of made me who i am today, if it makes sense? ))
The next morning, Bird in Shallow Waters groaned as she uncurled from the tight ball she was in. Where was she? As the moments passed, the memory of the day before came back to her and she looked over at the still-sleeping shecat beside her. Bird could only quirk a smile- the whole den, just like her, was still slowly waking up while Bird was used to being up as soon as she had to be.
"Get up," she murmured, poking Darkfern in the side with an amused little grin. "I think we have to go see your Snowstar, correct? It would be best to inform him of anything right now. He is awake." She could hear movement and speaking outside- two cats she didn't know, Duskbite, and Snowstar.
Her thoughts went back to their conversation before they slept. Other tribes? It almost seemed unthinkable, but she remembered stories of when their whole territory actually held two Tribes, friendly but with different customs. They had merged when sickness spread through their camps, needing more cats in one place so that they could actually live. The Tribe of Endless Plains and the Tribe of Crashing Waves had come together to form the one that they had for many moons upon moons, many generations of Wavecallers- the Tribe of Endless Waves. Messengers had been needed before then, essentially cats of both Tribes, but before they had been wiped out her Tribe had used them as highly mobile one cat patrols and to deliver words back and forth between patrols and the camp.
She poked at Darkfern again, purring with amusement. "Come on. We do really need to talk to your leader, Darkfern."

[ the art forums were amazing! ahh ebonycloud had amazing gns going on, and deer did as well ahhh. that totally makes sense o: ]
A grumble came from Darkfern. She felt herself curl up tighter within herself when a paw prodded into her side. "Stop it, Batstep," she muttered, thinking it was her brother trying to wake her up first. She wasn't done sleeping; couldn't he let her sleep for five more minutes? After a few more moments the she-cat slowly opened her eyes. She blinked sleep out of them and turned to look up, surprised to see not her brother, but a strange she-cat. Bird, she remembered after a moment.
With a yawn Darkfern slowly got to her paws. She stretched out her body. Once finished she looked around, noticing how other cats were slowly waking themselves up to start the day. A few nests were already empty - the early risers and cats on the dawn patrol had already left the den. "You're right," Darkfern huffed. She flicked her tail in slight annoyance. What a way to start the day - seeing Snowstar's face.
"I'm going, I'm going," Darkfern mumbled as Bird prodded her again. This time she couldn't help but mrrrow with laughter, leaning forward and nudging the Tribe cat. "A little impatient, are we?" She questioned with a glint of mirth in her amber eyes. Turning away from Bird for now, the tunneler stretched her limbs out one more time before slipping out of the den, ears perked forward when she immediately caught sight of both Duskbite and Snowstar. Had they been waiting for her? Already annoyed but hiding it, Darkfern padded up to the leader and deputy, dipping her head in welcome. "Duskbite, Snowstar, now is a good time for a quick chat, yes?" I want to claw your face off, but I can't right now. StarClan, help me keep my cool around these two!
