"Hmm....okay", Cloverpaw replied, taking a deep breath to boost her confidence. She circled around her mentor, narrowing her eyes as she thought of battle strategies. "He's bigger than me, but since I'm smaller I'll probably be faster", she reminded herself. While the apprentice was behind Sagemint, she leaped onto his back, attempting to grab onto his shoulders with sheathed claws.

Sagemint had pretended not to see the move coming. Now, he ducked quickly, feeling his apprentice launch over his head. She was so close that he felt a cool chill of wind as Cloverpaw passed him. Sagemint whipped around, claws sheathed.

Cloverpaw hissed with annoyance as she landed over Sagemint; she was more angry at herself for not expecting it than at her mentor. She bunched up her hind legs, then jolted quickly underneath the underneath the tom, barreling straight towards his stomach.

Sagemint reared up, going in for a frontal paw blow, then jumping out of range. Noticing Cloverpaw charging at him, he used his hind legs to neatly avoid her. He sailed over her head quite easily. "Not that easy? Is it?"

Cloverpaw was panting with the effort of battle training. "You're pretty good", she admitted, licking down her ruffled chest fur. She hadn't expected it to be that hard, so she was surprised at the intensity. "Where did I go wrong?", she added, curious as to what she could do to get better at her fighting moves.

Sagemint narrowed his eyes."Try and be one step ahead of me and ready to dodge when I strike. Make sure your wait is equally balanced so that it's easier to dodge and use the spur of the moment one you anticipate my next move." Sagemint's heavy breathing let him know that him know that Cloverpaw was pretty good.

Cloverpaw nodded, soaking in all of the information he had told her. "Can we try that again? I want to use your tips", she said, hoping he would agree. The fluffy gray apprentice was eager to use her new skills.

"Okay!", Cloverpaw replied, crouching down low so that the soft gray fur on her belly brushed the ground. She narrowed her light blue eyes to focus on her target. In efforts to trick Sagemint, she ran and swerved to the left of his body, but dove straight underneath him instead of attacking his flank.

Cloverpaw yowled as her mentor grabbed onto her back and shoulders. She then leaped up into the air while Sagemint was still holding onto her back, in an attempt to throw him off. Her hind legs kicked out from beneath her as she was jumping, and her sheathed claws scraped against his flank.

Sagemint held on tightly, clinging to her back. When his paw slipped, he ended up jumping off of her back. "You're not bad!"

"Yay! I told you I could beat you in battle!", Cloverpaw cheered excitedly, suddenly forgetting her exhaustion as she jumped up and down. She pranced around in a little excited dance for a few moments before calming down. "How do you jump and stay on someone's back?", the apprentice asked breathlessly, as she had failed to execute the move earlier.

Sagemint narrowed his eyes. "Normally, I would have been digging my claws in and raking them all over your back, but we were practicing with sheathed claws. It is harder without using your claws. It's a move that works well on foxes and badgers. You try it on me."

"Oh! I'll just pretend you're a badger then", Cloverpaw mewed, readying herself as she got into a position to spring. The small she-cat leaped up behind Sagemint, and balanced her weight carefully on his back. With one of her paws digging into his shoulder, she used the other to rake her sheathed claws down his fur. Pretending he was a threatening creature to her clan helped her focus.

Cloverpaw gasped with surprise as Sagemint began to shake her off. She scrabbled against his back desperately, willing herself to stay on, but her paws slipped off of the sleek fur and she landed on the sandy ground. Hissing with annoyance, she slashed her sheathed claws along his flank blindly, unsure of what to do.

"Our ancestors are here to guide us along our path; but I don't believe they know everything", Petalnose mewed. She could hear Icestar softly speak about his mother. "I'm sure she's looking down on us, and is proud of you", the deputy added softly, her tail brushing along his flank gently. "I often wonder if my brothers are watching down on me too, and when I look up at the night sky, I feel that I can see them in the stars", she added, her eyes brimming with emotion as she thought about her deceased brothers, who had died as kits due to sickness. ( Icefang I'm not sure if you saw my reply, but here it is just in case ^ ) "Yeah, I'm fine", Cloverpaw panted, impressed by her mentor's strength in battle training. "I didn't even think you were that good!", she blurted out, instantly regretting speaking afterwards. "Uh, I mean, you were just so good it blew me away...?!", the apprentice added awkwardly, feeling her cheeks grow hot underneath her fur. |

"No, no, I didn't mean that!", the apprentice squealed, feeling bad for what she had said. Her paws shifted underneath her with discomfort as she felt her mentor's eyes staring down at her. "I just thought I could beat you, right away", Cloverpaw admitted, looking down at the sand as if something interesting was scuttling across the ground.

"Okay, okay, I know", Cloverpaw replied, standing up to give him a swift lick behind the ear. "Can we go back to camp now? I'm tired!", she added, panting and rolling over on her back dramatically. "See? You can't just overwork your apprentice!", the she-cat mewed.

Falconpaw's green eyes flickered open, his jaws opening in a yawn as he sluggishly rose his head from his nest. His vision was slightly blurred from waking up before his eyesight adjusted. The tom looked around in his den, noticing that all of the other apprentices were awake and out of the den. He grumbled under his breath as he rose to his paws rather slowly, his eyes droopy. When he managed to stumble his way out of the apprentice den, he was overwhelmed with the abundant light.I just want to go back to sleep, he thought bitterly to himself.
