introduction On a cliff of a large mountain, a group of cats sat around each other murmuring in hushed tones. From a nearby pine forest a tall, red she-cat emerged, head bowing in respectful greeting. As she entered into the group, the other cats silenced and watched her with interest. "Well, what was I brought here for?" she asked in a gravelly voice. The cats looked to each other as if seeing who would speak first. It was a few more moments before a large ginger tom with stars in his pelt stepped forward and cleared his throat. "Grousestar, my old friend, it is good to see you again. I have to put this as bluntly as possible: the gods are warring." Completely silence fell over the cliff. Not a breath nor a piece of prey scurrying among the undergrowth was to be heard; it was ominous. The red she-cat, Grousestar, looked as confused as a newborn kit. "That hasn't happened in many seasons, Yelloweyes. Are you sure that this is what is happening?" "Unfortunately, yes. We do not know why; we do not have the answers." Looking almost mournful, the tom stepped back into the ranks of the original group. Before long another starry cat took his place speaking to Grousestar, this one a gray she-cat. "Dreadstar... I... I haven't seen you since I received my lives. Where have you been?" the red cat asked quietly. "That does not matter, Grousestar. You must look into the mountain to understand the gods. A soul there is old and has remained for generations; it knows the Great One," Dreadstar said before padding away and fading into nothing. Looking bewildered and shocked, Grousestar whipped her head around to face Yelloweyes and the rest of the cats. "What is going on, Yelloweyes?" she growled lowly. The tom only shook his head and touched his nose to hers. "You will save the clan, Grousestar. You will keep them safe..."
rules Level of Role-Play: ValleyClan is not a free or casual role-play; it is, at the least, a semi-advanced role-play. This means that you cannot type out one-liners most of the time. Just scraping by is three lines, but as long as you can type three or more you should be fine. Use descriptive words and emotions in your posts; make your character have thoughts; personify your character. Don't make them not have a brain. Also make sure to use proper grammar; there is nothing more annoying than not being able to understand someone's post because they are using improper syntax.
Activity: This is one of the most important rules for me. My friends and I have worked very, very hard on this clan and we do not want it to die out. I'm saying that you have to be on at least twice a week for a pretty lengthy period and actually role-play -- not just chat. If you will be gone for vacation, are grounded, or can't get on for some matter or another, please notify myself or one of my moderators ahead of time. I understand that people have lives - believe me, I do. I have training to do, a job, friends, and vacation, so I'll be gone often - but I'll still be on at least four to five times a week. I will be performing activity checks every Sunday. If you are not active enough, you will be deleted from the clan but will be given a warning beforehand. Metagaming: I have been on the forums for a while and haven't seen many cases of Mary-Su's and Gary-Stu's lately, but just in case you are thinking of making one here - don't. There is to be no spotlighting, power-playing, or god-modding in this clan. You get two warnings for doing it before you are deleted from the clan.
Limits: I will not put up a set number for the amount of cats you can claim, but please don't claim to much. I fully reserve the right to take some of your characters away if you are not role-playing them enough or if you have an excess of characters. I will put up a limit if it becomes too much of a problem. Please consider joining with two warriors for every apprentice, the same with queens as well. Try to keep genders as even as possible. Plagiarism: All of the work here is original. If one of the members of the clan catches you using something here, they will know to report you right away. Wildsong and myself worked very hard to make this clan and we will not tolerate any instances of plagiarism.
Mentors & Special Positions: If your cat is the deputy, medicine cat, medicine cat apprentice, or is a key cat in a plot, you must be on quite frequently. There will be no exceptions. If you are not, you will be removed from the position or plot and be replaced. If your cat is a mentor to an apprentice, you really need to be on a lot. If you are not on enough, I will reassign the apprentice to another person, so think heavily on your choice of claiming a cat that is a mentor. Spamming: You're allowed to ask a person back to another role-play, of course, but you cannot post links to that role-play. If you are a member of the clan you are allowed to post links, but not that often. If it happens too much, a moderator or myself will confront you about it.
Forum Rules: If you break one of the forum rules, you will be deleted from the clan and reported immediately. You will not be allowed to rejoin the clan. Complaining: Do not complain if I give a special position or mentorship to someone before you. Also, do not complain if things do not go your way in the role-play. It is not acceptable.
joining Please join using the following form. I fully reserve the right to decline you. screen-name: text here character name: text here three personality traits: text here other: text here rp sample: text here

territory ValleyClan takes up residence in Great Basin National Park, though this is before many humans lived in or around the park. Only Native American tribes sometimes pass through their territory but they do not try to harm the cats. Covering most of the territory is a large coniferous forest. There is a lake in the middle of the territory and another lake on the eastern part of the territory. There are many strange landmarks that the cats say their gods created. There are many small mountains in the territory, though not many cats like to scale them. In greenleaf the territory gets very hot, especially in the bristlecone pine forest, and in leafbare it gets very cold.
The Great Arch: The Great Arch is located in the southwestern part of the territory and is where the cats meet with StarClan. It is a naturally occurring limestone arch. In ValleyClan mythology, it is believed to have been carved out by the goddess U'na.
The Dead Forest: The Dead Forest isn't actually dead, it just consists of mainly bristlecone pine trees. Good hunting can be found here and this is also where apprentices are given one part of the specification tests. Hawks are known to nest here so it is dangerous for small cats to venture into the Dead Forest. It is located in the northwestern part of the territory. It is very sandy and dry.
The Reflecting Lake: At the center of the territory is the Reflecting Lake. It is bordered by a large pine forest on one side and large cliff on the other. Here is where cats can play and relax, though it is a bit of a walk from the camp to the lake. Lots of fish live in the lake so there is good hunting to be found here as well.
The Grasslands: At the westernmost part of the territory is a large section of grasslands. This area is extremely safe and rich with prey. Hunters train their apprentices here until they are ready to move on to more dangerous areas.
The Great Peaks: To the north of ValleyClan territory there are many large mountains which create the basin that the clan lives in. In these mountains there is a tribe of cats that are considered to be closer to the gods than any other cats. Only in times of dire need does the clan contact them. They have never been known to come down from the mountains.
camp Settled back deep in the Lehman Caves, the clan makes their home. It's far enough back and concealed that it's been seasons since any twoleg has even come near them- but guards are still always alert. It's a spiraling mess of pillars and platforms, with varying shades of yellow and orange stone. It's possible to find a meal without leaving the camp- it's not uncommon to see mice or even bats for experienced hunters and climbers settled in corners. Kits and apprentices enjoy exploring the many rooms and holes to hide in, while still being careful of the puddles that cover the ground at time. There are multiple spots, all raised off of the ground, for nests. No rank besides the medicine cats and and leader have a specific den. The medicine cat den is closest to the ground and exit of the caves, which is entered through a hole in the wall that opens into a large open area. The leader's den is the highest up, where he or she climbs a pillar into a spot concealed by stone. Generally, the higher up a cat sleeps, the more respect they have within the Clan- an unspoken rule that usually only applies to heads. The way to exit the caves is hidden in the back, a tunnel that cats have to push through and end up in the forest, surrounded by undergrowth and shaded by a large tree. This acts almost as a lounge for cats that feel uncomfortable closed in the caves for sometimes up to days at a time.
gods Along with believing in StarClan, ValleyClan cats believe in their own set of gods. Some cats say that they took on these gods from the Native Americans living in the area and others say that they are original. Whichever it may be, the gods are highly respected in ValleyClan.
Gammu, the jackrabbit, lends swiftness to a cat's paws. He watches faithfully over the hunt and ensures the catch of good prey. Just as he gives swiftness, he can take it away and with it the promise of a good catch.
Kinii, the hawk, watches over all with her infinite wisdom. She is the goddess of medicine cats and oracles, as she also gives the gift of foresight.
Adku, the elk, deals in family affairs. He is the god that ensures good relationships and strong bonds. He is honored as the First God or the Great God as the clan is a family.
U'na, the badger, is the goddess of protection and motherhood. She gifts mothers with their kits and watches over them through gestation and birth. She watches over battles and protects strong warriors. She is also the goddess of relationships(family, friends, mates, enemies, etc.)
warriors ranks After being apprenticed, cats are put into a path. It may be based off of their skills; maybe because they requested it. Choosing a path isn't final. They are mentored by a cat in the rank they are placed in- hunter, guard, scout, or medicine cat. Apprentices learn skills from all ranks (except medicine cat, unless they are one) during their training. Each one has different skills, meaning every cat will fit into one.
hunter: Hunters make up the most of the clan. They are well-rounded cats- but, obviously, best at hunting. As the clan gets larger, hunters have more work to do- they are all the clan relies on for meals.
guard: Guards are strong and know how to fight. They are responsible for defending their clanmates, and may be the first into battles and frequently placed around the caves for defense purposes.
scout: Scouts are very small and lithe. First into unexplored or potentially dangerous territory, they must be quick thinkers- and runners. Due to having extensive knowledge of the territory, they also deliver messaged back and forth.
medicine cat: Medicine cats heal their clanmates. With such a large range of cats comes a larger range of injuries- they seem to always be busy. However, each cat is trained in one skill more then the others- from wounds to birthing to collecting and identifying herbs.
Each rank has a head. The head is almost as powerful as the clan's deputy - problems go through them before higher up. Heads are chosen carefully and appointed by the leader for being exceptional in not only their rank, but having at least common knowledge of all.

Plots "You must look into the mountain to understand the gods. A soul there is old and has remained for generations; it knows the Great One." Many sunrises have passed since Grousestar received her prophecy from her former leader, Dreadstar. Since then StarClan has not walked her dreams. Dead jackrabbits have been found in the territory, seemingly killed by hawks. The same has happened with badgers being trampled by elk, and then there have also been elk found dead in odd places. Something bad is happening with the gods and none of the medicine cats nor Grousestar know what is going on. To be able to save the clan from imminent destruction, Grousestar has to figure out a plan - and quick.

Right. Left. One foot after the other. Was the the technique he kept repeating in his mind as he made his way through the forest. The ground underneath his pink pawpads was still wet with dew, and the sun had barely risen yet. And he had to fluff his thick, cream colored pelt to block out the morning chill. His chocolate tabby ears were pricked, alert in case anything was lurking, and his little pink nose twitched as he sniffed the air. His pale blue eyes flickering from side to side. Scanning his surroundings. The masculine froze once he heard a rustling nearby. The nervousness in his blue eyes quickly turning to fear.
A drop of water fell on his nose and it set him off. Taking a tremendous leap into the air, a yowl escaping his predominately cream maw. Once he regained his balance once again on the moss forest floor, the tom glared up above him at a very tall tree. How embarrassing that would have been if someone had been with me! Come on Morningdusk, get yourself together. My mission is more important than being silly, letting water falling on your nose. He mentally scolded himself, setting off once more. More prepared for any dew that was dripping from above. But no matter how hard he tried, Morningdusk would never stop being so jumpy.
But his trip would be coming to an end soon, or at least this first one did, since he had many other places to stop. As a still pool came into view. Farther ahead a small waterfall, fell into the pool. Clearly the source of what had created it. And large gray rocks shielded it from the left and right sides of it. But all was still this morning. Not even the wildlife had begun to stir at this time of day. Not even any prey sat bathing in the sunlight atop of the rocks as they usually did during the evening time. It was then when the cat realized how hungry he was. I should have eaten while I was still in camp. Then I wouldn't even be worrying about this right now. But Morningdusk was perfectly capable for hunting. He wasn't completely helpless all the time.
As the thick-furred tom neared the edge of the pool. He made a hard left turn towards a patch of growing plants. Little blue flowers sprouted from the ground. They were the shapes of stars, and little spiky looking leaves poked out from behind the petals. But Morningdusk wasn't interested in the buds, he was more interested in the leaves that sprouted out along the stems of the plants. They were borage leaves. Very good for nursing queens and for fevers. Though no one was pregnant or sick at the moment, it was still wise to collect more just in case. I never know what kind of sicknesses or pregnancies were just waiting to come.
Delicately as he could, the tom reached out a furry dark brown paw and tested how old the leaves were. Majority were ready to be picked but some were still a little fuzzy. Slowly, he reached his neck forward and nipped a few of the leaves away from the stem until he was sure he had enough. "Excellent. Just perfect." He murmured, collecting all of the leaves in his wide jaws before trotting away. Feathery tail kinked over his back as he ventured through the forest to collect his next set of herbs.

Grousestar;; Three moons had passed since Grousestar had received her visit from Dreadstar and dead animals had been appearing all over the territory, specifically the sacred animals - badgers, jackrabbits, elk, and hawks. No one could figure out why this had been happening and even the medicine cats didn't understand it. These omens had caused great stress to be placed upon the leader's shoulders and it was beginning to show. Every morning she looked a bit more worse for wear, and this morning was no worse. As she exited her den and looked upon the caverns that she called home, she could smell greenleaf beginning to turn into leaf-fall. All of this made her wonder if the colder seasons would be harsher on them. With three kits, a few young apprentices, and a recent outbreak of whitecough, it wasn't what the clan needed. After letting out a small sigh at her thoughts, Grousestar jumped down to the floor of the camp and nodded her greetings to the cats beginning to stir.
Scorpionheart;; Being a scout meant being one of the first cats awake, especially when you were one of the best. Scorpionheart had been awake since before dawn had broke and had only gotten grumpier as the sun rose. She hadn't been on a patrol yet or done any actual work, but she had been made by Stonesky to pad around the camp and out the tunnel to smell for any unusual scents. As usual, there was nothing. Now when she actually had to do work she would be in a worse mood than usual, which meant none of her clanmates would want to deal with her... which wasn't out of the norm. With a scowl on her face, the small she-cat headed over to the fresh-kill pile and picked up a tiny mouse, pretty much one of the only pieces of prey left. As she headed to a more secluded area of the camp to eat, she muttered something to herself along the lines of how Crowfoot needed to send out more patrols for better food.

Crowfoot stretched, her back arching as her claws scraped the rock she claimed as her own. It was jutting out of one of the walls of the cavern at a harsh looking angle, which only made it harder for the apprentices that would dare each other to climb the walls to get into her nest. She yawned, one of her ears flicking, before she hopped off of her perch. Her paws placed perfectly as she landed on each stone, leading her lower and lower to the ground until she was at the same level as waking cats. Without missing a beat, she bounded forward so that she was closer to the rest of a Clan. She took a moment to scan who was awake (and who was least likely to snap at her), and then started calling out a few small patrols, making sure to add a warning to each one- "If you find anything suspicious, you tell me as soon as you see me." Letting out a small sigh after she'd sent patrols out, she turned to pad towards the exit of the caves, ready to slip out herself and get her daily alone hunting time in.
Lizardnose stalked out of the medicine cat den, placing his pawsteps carefully against the stone, which he felt getting cooler with the weather. He found a space to sit on a flattened rock near the fresh-kill, and his jaws opened in a yawn. He had just woken up, and wasn't quite ready to go looking for herbs yet. He blinked a few times, letting his gaze rest on each of the cats as they merged with each other, having conversations and leaving on patrols.

Grousestar;; Since Dreadstar's last visit, Grousestar had heard nothing from StarClan. Maybe it was time to take a trip to the Great Arch, bring along one of the medicine cats and the heads. Not only did she need to speak to her ancestors about the gods, but she also needed to speak to them about a new deputy. Yelloweyes had passed over a moon ago and since then no cat had shown exemplary skills so no replacement had been selected. The heads and Grousestar had been making all of the decisions and that was taking even more of a toll on the aging leader. When Lizardnose exited his den, she made the decision to talk to him then and there about visiting the sacred site. Getting up from where she was, she headed over to him and flicked her ears in greeting. "Lizardnose, good morning," she rasped.

The scrawny tom flattened his ears as he heard his name, turning his head. When LIzardnose saw it was Grousestar, he let out a quiet sigh of relief, and dipped his head out of respect. "Hello, Grousestar." His wide yellow eyes were filled with concern at the time. "Did you get a good night of sleep? Have you heard anything yet?" He lifted a paw, rubbing it behind his ear as he waited for a response. His pelt was littered with bits of leaves and herbs, as usual. He continued to smooth down his pelt, cleaning off as much as he could.

Grousestar;; In response to both of the medicine cat's questions, Grouestar shook her head. As she sat down next to him, she let out a weak sigh and curled her tail delicately around her paws. "I still haven't heard anything. Before I did I hadn't seen Dreadstar since I received my lives, and now he's gone again." More than anyone else, Lizardnose and his brother knew the troubles that their leader had been going through. The three had always been close and when Grousestar rose to the very top of the clan, they instantly became two of her best advisers. Because of this, Grasspelt and Lizardnose were the first to know when she received her prophecy. "I think it's time we visit the Great Arch again. All of us will go, save Rosefall so that she can be with her kit. She and Crowfoot will watch over the clan while we're gone. We'll try and see if StarClan walks in any of our dreams."
